Book excerpt: Piezoelectric actuators have proven to be useful in suppressing disturbances and shape control of flexible structures. Large space structures such as solar arrays are susceptible to large amplitude vibrations while in orbit. Moreover, Shape control of many high precision structures such as large membrane mirrors and space antenna is of great importance. Since most of these structures need to be ultra-light-weight, only a limited number of actuators can be used. Consequently, in order to obtain the most effcient control system, the locations of the piezoelectric elements as well as the feedback gain should be optimized. These optimization problems are generally non-convex. In addition, the models for these systems typically have a large number of degrees of freedom. Researchers have used numerous optimization criteria and optimization techniques to find the optimal actuator locations in structural shape and vibration control. Due to the non-convex nature of the problem, evolutionary optimization techniques are extensively used. However, One drawback of these methods is that they do not use the gradient information and so convergence can be very slow. Classical gradient-based techniques, on the other hand, have the advantage of accurate computation; however, they may be computationally expensive, particularly since multiple initial conditions are typically needed to ensure that a global optimum is found. Consequently, a fast, yet global optimization method applicable to systems with a large number of degrees of freedom is needed. In this study, the feedback control is chosen to be an optimal linear quadratic regulator. The optimal actuator location problem is reformulated as a convex optimization problem. A subgradient-based optimization scheme which leads to the global solution of the problem is introduced to optimize the actuator locations. The optimization algorithm is applied to optimize the placement of piezoelectric actuators in vibration control of flexible structures. This method is compared with a genetic algorithm, and is observed to be faster in finding the global optimum. Moreover, by expanding the desired shape into the structure's modes of vibration, a methodology for shape control of structures is presented. Applying this method, locations of piezoelectric actuators on flexible structures are optimized. Very few experimental studies exist on shape and vibration control of structures. To the best knowledge of the author, optimal actuator placement in shape control has not been experimentally studied in the past. In this work, vibration control of a cantilever beam is investigated for various actuator locations and the effect of optimal actuator placement is studied on suppressing disturbances to the beam. Also using the proposed shape control method, the effect of optimal actuator placement is studied on the same beam. The final shape of the beam and input voltages of actuators are compared for various actuator placements.

Book excerpt: Acquiring the ability to effectively modify and control the behavior of fluid flow continues to be a pervasive and important aspiration in many areas of engineering. The present research continues to advance the technology of various schemes that employ the use of wall-mounted actuators for active flow control. Any design in which fluid-flow characteristics are important (aircraft, turbomachinery, ships, etc.) stands to benefit from this new technology of manipulating the flow behavior by time dependent forcing. Research completed to date promises reduced cost, complexity, and weight along with significant improvement in design performance. A summary of this research indicates however, that the details of the disturbance excitation process have still not been completely explored, and hence an understanding of the important parameters in actuator design is currently unavailable to the engineer. Only with this knowledge will it be possible to design devices for specific tasks that are efficient and effective in their performance. Our program of research examines boundary value periodic point source excitations of laminar boundary layers, and considers how some more complex actuators might be modeled numerically. The study is carried out in three parts: i. linear theory, ii. wind tunnel measurements, iii. full Navier-Stokes modeling.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to analytically and experimentally study the capabilities of piezoelectric plate actuators for suppressing flutter. Piezoelectric materials are characterized by their ability to produce voltage when subjected to a mechanical strain. The converse piezoelectric effect can be utilized to actuate a structure by applying a voltage. For this investigation, a two-degree-of-freedom wind tunnel model was designed, analyzed, and tested. The model consisted of a rigid wing and a flexible mount system that permitted a translational and a rotational degree of freedom. The model was designed such that flutter was encountered within the testing envelope of the wind tunnel. Actuators made of piezoelectric material were affixed to leaf springs of the mount system. Command signals, applied to the piezoelectric actuators, exerted control over the damping and stiffness properties. A mathematical aeroservoelastic model was constructed by using finite element methods, laminated plate theory, and aeroelastic analysis tools. Plant characteristics were determined from this model and verified by open loop experimental tests. A flutter suppression control law was designed and implemented on a digital control computer. Closed loop flutter testing was conducted. The experimental results represent the first time that adaptive materials have been used to actively suppress flutter. They demonstrate that small, carefully placed actuating plates can be used effectively to control aeroelastic response. Heeg, Jennifer Langley Research Center RTOP 505-63-50-15...

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This thesis presents a lumped element model of a piezoelectric-driven synthetic-jet actuator. A synthetic jet, also known as a zero net mass-flux device, uses a vibrating diaphragm to generate an oscillatory flow through a small orifice or slot. In lumped element modeling, the individual components of a synthetic jet are modeled as elements of an equivalent electrical circuit using conjugate power variables. The frequency response function of the circuit is derived to obtain an expression for the volume flow rate through the orifice per applied voltage across the piezoceramic. The circuit is analyzed to provide physical insight into the dependence of the device behavior on geometry and material properties. Methods to estimate the model parameters are discussed along with pertinent model assumptions, and experimental verification is presented of the lumped parameter models. In addition, two prototypical synthetic jet actuators are built and tested. Very good agreement is obtained between the predicted and measured frequency response functions.
