Book Synopsis Geometric Topology in Dimensions 2 and 3 by : E.E. Moise

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric topology may roughly be described as the branch of the topology of manifolds which deals with questions of the existence of homeomorphisms. Only in fairly recent years has this sort of topology achieved a sufficiently high development to be given a name, but its beginnings are easy to identify. The first classic result was the SchOnflies theorem (1910), which asserts that every 1-sphere in the plane is the boundary of a 2-cell. In the next few decades, the most notable affirmative results were the "Schonflies theorem" for polyhedral 2-spheres in space, proved by J. W. Alexander [Ad, and the triangulation theorem for 2-manifolds, proved by T. Rad6 [Rd. But the most striking results of the 1920s were negative. In 1921 Louis Antoine [A ] published an extraordinary paper in which he 4 showed that a variety of plausible conjectures in the topology of 3-space were false. Thus, a (topological) Cantor set in 3-space need not have a simply connected complement; therefore a Cantor set can be imbedded in 3-space in at least two essentially different ways; a topological 2-sphere in 3-space need not be the boundary of a 3-cell; given two disjoint 2-spheres in 3-space, there is not necessarily any third 2-sphere which separates them from one another in 3-space; and so on and on. The well-known "horned sphere" of Alexander [A ] appeared soon thereafter.

Book Synopsis Introduction to 3-Manifolds by : Jennifer Schultens
Download or read book Introduction to 3-Manifolds written by Jennifer Schultens and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of a graduate course on 3-manifolds and is intended for a mathematically experienced audience that is new to low-dimensional topology. The exposition begins with the definition of a manifold, explores possible additional structures on manifolds, discusses the classification of surfaces, introduces key foundational results for 3-manifolds, and provides an overview of knot theory. It then continues with more specialized topics by briefly considering triangulations of 3-manifolds, normal surface theory, and Heegaard splittings. The book finishes with a discussion of topics relevant to viewing 3-manifolds via the curve complex. With about 250 figures and more than 200 exercises, this book can serve as an excellent overview and starting point for the study of 3-manifolds.
Download or read book Topology Now! written by Robert Messer and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topology is a branch of mathematics packed with intriguing concepts, fascinating geometrical objects, and ingenious methods for studying them. The authors have written this textbook to make the material accessible to undergraduate students without requiring extensive prerequisites in upper-level mathematics. The approach is to cultivate the intuitive ideas of continuity, convergence, and connectedness so students can quickly delve into knot theory, the topology of surfaces and three-dimensional manifolds, fixed points and elementary homotopy theory. The fundamental concepts of point-set topology appear at the end of the book when students can see how this level of abstraction provides a sound logical basis for the geometrical ideas that have come before. This organization exposes students to the exciting world of topology now(!) rather than later. Students using this textbook should have some exposure to the geometry of objects in higher-dimensional Euclidean spaces together with an appreciation of precise mathematical definitions and proofs.
Book Synopsis Elementary Theory by : Richard V. Kadison
Download or read book Elementary Theory written by Richard V. Kadison and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of the Theory of Operator Algebras, Volume I: Elementary Theory provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of the theory of operator algebras. This book discusses the finite-dimensional linear algebra. Organized into five chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of linear functional analysis that are needed in the study of operator algebras. This text then discusses the continuous linear operators, continuous linear functionals, weak topologies, and convexity in the context of linear topological spaces. Other chapters consider the elementary geometry of Hilbertspaces and the simplest properties of Hilbert space operators. This book discusses as well algebras that have a Banach-space structure relative to which the multiplication is continuous. The final chapter deals with those C*-algebras that are strong-operator closed in their action on some Hilbert space, which play a fundamental role in the subject. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Nonstandard Real Analysis by : Albert E. Hurd
Download or read book An Introduction to Nonstandard Real Analysis written by Albert E. Hurd and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1985-10-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to make Robinson's discovery, and some of the subsequent research, available to students with a background in undergraduate mathematics. In its various forms, the manuscript was used by the second author in several graduate courses at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The first chapter and parts of the rest of the book can be used in an advanced undergraduate course. Research mathematicians who want a quick introduction to nonstandard analysis will also find it useful. The main addition of this book to the contributions of previous textbooks on nonstandard analysis (12,37,42,46) is the first chapter, which eases the reader into the subject with an elementary model suitable for the calculus, and the fourth chapter on measure theory in nonstandard models.
