Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ... SECTION XII CHAPTER LVIII BRAIN SYSTEM The fact that the actions of many living organisms are controlled through the nervous system has long been known to mankind. This knowledge had been so long coupled with a superstition, however, that when investigators began scientifically to delve into the study of the nervous system, the pendulum inevitably swung in the opposite direction and every phase of its function was placed upon a material base which was as impotent to explain it as the original superstitious views. Long ago the idea was prevalent that the nerves were minute vessels, in the lumen of which was contained a substance known as animal spirits. These traveled from one part of the body to another and in some mysterious manner controlled the functions of the various organisms. These animal spirits were thought to have their seat in the ventricles of the brain and to leave this home for the journey to other parts when the necessity required. Upon the invention of the microscope a large field of investigation was opened in many phases and it was instrumental in leading to the further consideration of every portion of the human body, including the nervous system. In this latter field it disclosed the fact that the nerves were not hollow tubes but were made up of cells arranged in a definite order from the very center of the structure to the surrounding membrane. It disclosed the fact that each nerve was composed of funiculi and each funicilus of fibers. Further, it was found that the nerve branched and rebranched, giving off these fibers as units to the cells. Science set herself at the task of explaining the function of the nervous system from the known scientific laws. Its instruments were taken in hand and each minute part of the...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technic and Practice of Chiropractic O two students, approaching for the first time the N study Of Chiropractic, approach from the same angle. Their viewpoints differ. In order that all may gain as nearly as possible the same viewpoint from which to consider in turn the sections of this book, it will be well if each student reads the entire book before begin ning to memorize its parts and convert them into practical working knowledge. An effort should be made, abandoning all other, to ac quire the Chiropractic viewpoint. This accomplished, the rest of the task requires time and patience alone, without waste labor. The section on Vertebral Palpation should be studied step by step, the study of each step being combined with practice in it. Likewise the section on nerve-tracing, theory preceding practice. The study of the Technic of Adjusting should occupy those months immediately preced ing the commencement Of actual adjusting practice and continue during such practice. The chapters on Practice are intended for the student about to enter the field. The table of spino-organic Connection can be best understood by those who have studied or are studying the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. It may, however, be studied just as easily by the field practitioner, and is not too technical in most of its parts to be readily grasped by the layman. It has grown, rather than having been written; it is the expansion of the notes which were tested in the class room for six years, and the writer believes that, with the constant arrangement and betterment to suit the requirements of the students of Chiropractic, this has created a real textbook, rendering easily understood a subject that students have always said was difficult.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Spinal Adjustment: For the Use of Students and Practitioners In common with most advances in the art of healing, Spinal Adjustment was first used in a purely empirical manner, its own advocates being unable to explain satisfactorily the re salts produced through its use. Careful investigation, how ever, has revealed the premises and furnished the data which rescue this form of treatment from the empiricism of the past and put it upon a substantial basis. The greatest obstacle to the general adoption of Spinal Adjustment has been the inherited belief that vertebral sub luxations are impossible. This belief has been successfully shattered by a large amount of experimental work, particularly upon the cadaver. In this work I was ably assisted by Dr. Erik Juhl and I hereby make grateful acknowledgement Of this gentleman's great help in this connection. The first section of this work deals with the principles Of Chiropractic. For verification of the different physiological facts enumerated in this part of the book I have referred quite extensively to the American d104 Book of Physiology and Kirk's Physiology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psycho-Bio-Physiology: Consisting of Applied Psychology, Biology as the Cause of Histology and Anatomy and a Description of the Conduct of Anatomic Parts, Which Is Physiology These books it seems to me have been gladly received and I would not do justice to their many readers, who have written me concerning them, if I did not believe that they have gratified a real desire, and been of value as tools of efficient service. I think I have observed a growing need for a book - literary and scientific, instructive as well as entertaining, both for professional preparation and use, and for the use of the layman so Chiropractic principles need to be disseminated as carefully and fully, in certain ways, to growing children and society in general - as they do to the professional Chiropractor. This book is formulated to meet that need. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
