Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Organic Chemistry Type of two sizes has been employed in the book, in order that the matter which is of the greatest importance, either in itself or for the purposes of a general review, may be readily distinguished. I have deemed it advisable to give a number of references with regard to points which have a particular historical value, and also to some of the more important recent researches, especially where space did not allow of these being treated in detail. The difficulty in the preparation of such a' work is to determine what to exclude. We have endeav ored to give consideration to the more important features of the science, especially in its applications. Polarisa tion of light has been treated in some detail on account of the importance of it in the study of molecular structure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Advances in Organic Chemistry The excerpts from previous prefaces printed below will enable the reader to see the main ideas which have been kept in view since the inception of this book in 1908. The demand for a fourth edition within little more than a year after the publication of the third edition seems to show that this method of treating the subject has been acceptable to the chemical public. In writing a book such as this, several difficulties have to be 'avoided. In the first place, it is essential to ensure that the text does not degenerate into a mere series of arid abstracts of authors' papers, for nothing is duller than chemical pemmican. Secondly, since it may reasonably be assumed that some readers are not perfectly acquainted with the earlier history of every field of research described in the volume, it is necessary to provide a foundation upon Which the description of recent work can be based. For example, to restrict an account of the work done upon the terpenes to papers published only within the last three years would be to distort the whole perspective of the subject and render the book unreadable. The title, "Recent Advances," was purposely chosen so as to permit the inclusion of earlier work wherever this was necessary; and the words must not be interpreted as meaning that only the very latest papers in any branch will be described. In the third place, the limitations of space complicate the author's problem. Out of the many fields of interest which the subject contains, he has to make a selection, since otherwise the book would be too unwieldy. How is the process of selection to be carried out? In the present volume an attempt has been made to hold the balance evenly between the theory and the practice of the subject, so as to give as fair a representation of the whole field as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Organic Chemistry IN the writing of text-books of Organic Chemistry there are two distinct and incompatible systems. In the one, it is the practical aspect of the science which is kept in chief view in the other, its symmetry and homogeneity. The one constantly directs attention to detail the other approaches the subject with the desire of displaying its orderly principles and structural unity. The present writer adheres with conviction to the latter method. The reader of text-books based upon the practical point of view is apt, if he be a beginner, to lose the thread of the argument in the wealth of facts for the mass of information necessary for the proper comprehension of the main principles of organic chemistry is so great, that additional details hinder rather than assist the student in his laborious task of assimilation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class-Book of Organic Chemistry This little volume has been written as an introduction to 'organic chemistry for the use of first year medical students and for senior science students in schools. By treating the theoretical and practical sides of the subject concurrently, it is intended that the book may serve the double purpose of text-book and laboratory manual. It is divided into three parts. In the first part the general principles underlying determinations of purity, empiric and molecular formulae and structure, are explained and illustrated by a careful study of two of the most familiar and most easily procurable organic substances, viz., methyl and ethyl alcohols. In the second part, the aliphatic compounds are described in a more systematic fashion and the third part is devoted to a brief account of the more important members of the aromatic series. It is hoped that the book will fill a gap and serve the purpose for which it was written. I wish to acknowledge the valuable help I have received from Mr. A. T. Simmons in the correction of the proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Organic Chemistry As a teacher of organic chemistry, I have felt the want of a small book on the subject. There is no lack of dictionaries and encyclopaedic works on organic chemistry, but they are too large for use in a college course. The few shorter English text-books are not, so far as my experience goes, well suited for teaching. The following work, which has met with remarkable suc cess in Germany, and which the author, Prof. Pinner, has kindly given me permission to translate, is founded on the system of teaching developed by the distinguished chemist Prof. A. W. Hofmann, of Berlin, and in some cases follows his lectures quite closely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Organic Chemistry: A Book Designed Especially for the General Student The present edition represents a thorough revision of the text in which, however, the original point of View has been strictly retained. The attempt has been made to have all statements accord strictly with the results of the latest and most reliable investigations, and the opportunity has been taken to introduce several topics of practical interest which had hitherto been omitted. Among these may be mentioned citric acid, the fulminates, the synthesis of india-rubber, and the chemistry of tannin. The chapter devoted to the com pounds of cyanogen has been brought more nearly in accord with modern technical practice, and that dealing with stereoisomerism has been largely rewritten in the interest of clearness. The author desires to express his thanks to all those who have called attention to inaccuracies or loose statements in the first edition, and hopes that he may rely upon them for similar favors in the future. He is especially indebted to his colleague, Professor W. T. Hall, for valuable assistance in reading the proofs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wohler's Outlines of Organic Chemistry It is, therefore, natural that of late the attention of Americans should have been attracted towards this field; and there begin to be slight indications of a desire on their part to aid In clearing up its many mysteries, a work in which for some years the Ger mans have been engaged almost to the exclusion of the chemists of other countries. Should the publica tion of this work tend in the slightest degree to increase this desire, I shall feel that my labor has not been in vain.
