Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A Textbook of General Practice' incorporates the essential information that every medical student needs to know and understand about general practice and being a general practitioner. Recognised as an invaluable environment for the education and training of medical students, general practice provides an excellent foundation for the basic principles of medicine without which the more in-depth information provided by the specialisms cannot be understood. The book's learning style is based on experiential and reflective principles, the cornerstones of modern educative theory and practice. Designed to encourage effective learning, the text is clearly presented, lively and user-friendly in its approach. A core of important information is presented and opportunities for reflection and experimentation enable the reader to integrate and commit them to memory. Addressing the changes in the new medical curriculum, 'A Textbook of General Practice' covers the practical skills needed in general practice, the theoretical background to providing good medicine and the larger considerations of encouraging life long learning and professional development. This new approach ensures a balance of clinical skills, broader communication skills and underlying theory in line with Britain's GMC Recommendations.

This book is an invaluable guide for students and practitioners who need to acquire a wide range of relevant skills, and it will equip them not only to assess the quality of published studies and apply findings to clinical practice, but also to undertake research themselves. An experienced team of contributors provide detailed explanations of the main concepts and methods used in critical appraisal of published research, and guide the reader in integrating these quality indicators into their own studies to ensure rigour in planning, design, and execution. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative approaches, the authors write with an emphasis on the development of sound research skills through case-based illustrative examples and scenarios, with helpful summaries and practical exercises throughout. They also give advice on writing abstracts, presenting papers at conferences, and liaising with publishers. Ultimately, this text will enable readers to have full confidence in understanding, undertaking, and disseminating empirical research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Medicine: A Text-Book for Practitioners and Students, With Special Reference to Diagnosis and Treatment I have no apology to make for preparing this book. I have long contemplated it, and have finished it after several years' labor. It has taken some time, because it represents almost purely personal work, which has been frequently interrupted. It does not pretend to be based on my personal practice only. In these days of specialized work this would be impossible, though with most of even the rare forms of disease in every section I have had some experience. To fill in the gaps of my own knowledge I have used that of others, but have always sought to make suitable acknowledgment to the proper source, and if this has not been done in any case, it has been a matter of oversight. I had not, at the outset, expected to illustrate the work, but, as it progressed, a certain number of illustrations seemed necessary, not only to explain the text, but also, in a few instances, to render clearer the treatment described. Thus the number of charts and other drawings has grown to nearly a hundred, all of which, it is hoped, will be found useful. In expectation of the ultimate adoption of the metric system for the measuring of doses, these have been indicated throughout the book in the metric and English measures. Acknowledgment is due to Dr. Joseph P. Walsh and Mr. M. A. Morin for suggestions after reading the text, to Dr. William Schleif for material assistance in Section XV, and to my son, Dr. T. Mellor Tyson, for assistance throughout the work and especially in preparing the index. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
