Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study aimed to test the generalizability of direct and mediated links posited in objectification theory (B.L. Fredrickson & T. Roberts, 1997) among sexual objectification experiences, internalization of sociocultural standards of beauty, body surveillance, body shame, and eating disorder symptoms. Within this framework, the roles of culture-related constructs, acculturation, enculturation, and perceived bicultural competence were examined. Specifically, the study examined (a) links of culture-related variables and sexual objectification experiences to body image- and eating disorder-related variables, and (b) the mediating roles of internalization of sociocultural standards of beauty, body surveillance, and body shame. As hypothesized, with a sample of 307 Asian American women, results from a path analysis suggested that (a) perceived bicultural competence was negatively correlated with eating disorder-related variables, (b) sexual objectification experiences was related positively with body surveillance through the mediating role of internalization, (c) internalization was related positively with body shame through the mediating role of body surveillance, and (d) body surveillance was expected to relate positively with eating disorder symptoms through the mediating role of body shame. However, acculturation and enculturation were not correlated with eating disorder-related variables. Implications for future research and practice with Asian American women were discussed.

Book excerpt: There is an increased interest in studying eating disorders and body image in ethnic minority populations. As research on non-White cultural groups increases, we are beginning to identify that eating disorders and body image concerns do exist cross-culturally, but may vary in presentation in each cultural group. However, information on the Asian population, specifically the South Asian population, is limited and inconclusive in this area. Questions about sociocultural influences in this population remain. Numerous methodological problems in the literature, such as wording and language of assessment tools and how South Asians as an ethnic or racial group is defined in the research may also limit our understanding. While the field has used current diagnostic criteria for eating disorders, the few qualitative studies with South Asian women have shown that when these women are asked how they feel about their body, many other variables that are not related and included in the diagnostic criteria are bought up as important to this group. Four sociocultural risk factors that may be relevant to South Asians based on the literature include: (a) body image, (b) acculturation, (c) cultural conflict, and (d) racial teasing. The current project was an exploratory study that utilized focus group interviews to better understand body image and eating concerns among 16 South Asian American women within a tri-state area (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania) in the United States. A self-report questionnaire provided participants a closed-ended and anonymous assessment of their experiences related to body image and eating concerns. A consensual qualitative research method was utilized to determine common themes identified in the focus groups. Five relevant domains were identified: (a) body image, (b) role of food, (c) eating habits, (d) acculturation, and (e) racial teasing. Results are consistent with previous research that shows there are culturally relevant variables related to body image and eating concerns for South Asian women that are not included in current diagnostic criteria. Clinicians and researchers need to be aware of these variables, as they may cause distress for women in this population and need to be reflected in devising appropriate interventions.

Book excerpt: Though it is known that eating disorders (EDs) affect individuals of all racial/ethnic backgrounds (Cheng, Perko, Fuller-Marashi, Gau, & Stice, 2019), people of color tend to be overlooked in the ED literature. South Asian Americans, a specific subset of individuals traditionally categorized within the larger umbrella group of "Asians," have been notoriously neglected in both the broader mental health literature, and in the ED literature (Inman, Devdas, Spektor, & Pendse, 2014; Iyer & Haslam, 2003, 2006). Currently, very little information exists on the etiology and presentation of EDs amongst South Asian communities. Even less is known about culturally-specific barriers to treatment-seeking for this population. To begin to address these issues, this study used focus group methodology with South Asian American women to identify salient themes. Thematic analysis revealed several key themes for body image and EDs, as well as perceived barriers and facilitators of ED treatment-seeking behavior for this group. Notably, South Asian American women are subjected to multiple appearance ideals, experience unique cultural stressors related to living in the United States, and perceive relatively high expectations and pressures from multiple social domains, including parents and community members. Both generalized and social stigma about mental health, parents' mental health concerns, lack of knowledge about EDs, and healthcare providers' biases were important barriers to treatment-seeking. To address these obstacles, participants recommended that clinicians facilitate intergenerational conversations about mental health, create ED psychoeducational health campaigns, and train providers in culturally-sensitive practices for detecting and treating mental health and ED concerns. Findings can inform the assessment, prevention, and treatment of EDs via the development of a culturally-sensitive ED assessment measure designed specifically for South Asian American women

Book excerpt: The current study had three main objectives: to examine the relation between trait and state self-objectification and various eating pathology, including restricted eating; to examine the role of general and specific feminist attitudes on body dissatisfaction and trait disordered eating; and to merge two empirically supported models of eating disorders. Using a quasi-experimental research design with an elaborate cover story, one hundred and three women completed a variety of baseline measures and were assigned to one of two state self-objectifying conditions (swimsuit vs. sweater) where body image and body shame were measured at post. Additionally, following the manipulation, participants caloric intake during a snack break was measured. Results indicated that trait self objectification was associated with disordered eating symptomatology and analyses found an effect of condition on body shame, and that this effect was moderated by trait self-objectification. These results were not documented for caloric intake and body dissatisfaction, likely due to time of assessment of these variables. Also, results indicate that objectification theory and the dual pathways model merge well and that in the dual pathway, body shame may be a component of body dissatisfaction. Finally, feminist attitudes were also associated with body dissatisfaction but not with disordered eating symptoms. Implications for clinical work and future research are discussed.
