Book excerpt: The known mature larvae of andrenid genera Spinoliella, Callonychium, and Arhysosage are described and compared with one another and with those of other Calliopsini. On the basis of both larval and adult anatomy, these three genera represent a distinctive clade, the "Spinoliella clade." The larvae are characterized by conspicuously enlarged and oddly shaped, paired dorsal tubercles on the pro- and mesothorax, while the paired dorsal tubercles of most other body segments are erect, elongate, and slender. All dorsal tubercles bear fine setae. The larvae were collected on field trips to South America over a 35 year period. Associated field notes are reported, treating information on nesting ecology, nest structure and dimensions, provisions, larval behavior, associated cleptoparasites, and mating behavior. Also presented is a preliminary taxonomic key to the genera of Calliopsini based on mature larvae.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herein we describe the mature oocyte and last larval instar of Stelis (Stelis) murina Pérez, a cleptoparasite associated with Osmia (Pyrosmia) submicans Morawitz near Ismailia, Egypt. The mature oocyte is compared with that of Stelis (Stelis) elongativentris Parker and found to be approximately equal in size. The mature oocyte of S. murina is also very close in size to that of its host, an unusual phenomenon in host-cleptoparasite relationships in bees. A review and analysis based on literature accounts of what is known about the mode of cleptoparasitism of Stelis is offered. Added are observations on the biology of Stelis murina resulting from our fieldwork. The mature larva of Stelis murina is described and found similar but not identical to those of other known Stelis larvae. We also include a preliminary key to the genera of cleptoparasitic megachilids based on known mature larvae and also a summary describing the modes of cleptoparasitism by these taxa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present issue of ZooKeys comprises a series of papers honoring Prof. Kumar Krishna, the leading au-thority on the systematics and biology of termites (Isoptera). After becoming exposed to termite systematics under the tutelage of Mittan L. Roonwal in India, Kumar received his doctoral training from the legendary termite systematist and evolutionary biologist Alfred E. Emerson at the University of Chicago. Subsequently, Kumar moved to the City University of New York and the American Museum of Natural History from where, even today, he has produced some of the most important contributions to the study of termites, most notably his two-volume set, Biology of Termites (1969?1970, Academic Press), and the forthcoming monumental Treatise on the Isoptera of the World (AMNH). Herein colleagues and friends recognize his lifetime of accomplishments in biological systematics by presenting original papers on insect lineages as diverse as termites and grasshoppers, and flies and bees, among others. A brief biographical account and list of his publications to date are provided.

Download or read book Hymenoptera of the World written by Canada. Agriculture Canada. Research Branch and published by Canadian Government Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is the result of a course on identification of Hymenoptera given three times since 1985 at the Centre for Land and Biological Resources Research. The considerable interest in these courses indicated the need for a comprehensive identification guide to all extant families of Hymenoptera. The main emphasis is on family identification using the keys, which are complemented by family sketches. The sketches include a taxonomic diagnosis to supplement the keys, a summary of the biology, the size and distribution, and important literature references.
