As far as is known, there is only one other dictionary, produced by a Spanish Catholic in the middle of the last century (i.e., Ibanez, Esteban. 1944. Diccionario Espaol-Rifeo. Madrid: Imprenta de la viuda de E. Maestre and (same author) 1949. Diccionario Rifeo-Espaol Etimolgico. Madrid: Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientficas, Instituto de Estudios Africanos). Since then, the language has changed dramatically due to the dominance of French, Spanish, Arabic languages and European mass media. It is in the same family as Arabic and Hebrew, with its own distinctives. One of these is a unique alphabet, called Tifinagh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Berbers are the original inhabitants of North Africa, in residence long before the Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals or the Arabs. Their languages, from the Afroasiatic language family, are spoken throughout the region, from the Siwa Oasis in Egypt to the Atlantic coast, and as far south as southern Niger and Mali. This book is a representation of the most commonly utilized words and phrases in one of these Berber dialects, in northeastern Morocco. Despite the fact that more than 1 million inhabitants speak the language today, social and economic changes are causing many young people to leave their mother tongue and concentrate on languages of upward mobility, such as Modern Standard Arabic, French and Spanish. Consequently, in an effort to help preserve this unwritten, little-studied and undocumented language, this work was produced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berbers, also known as Imazighen, are the ancient inhabitants of North Africa, but rarely have they formed an actual kingdom or separate nation state. Ranging anywhere between 15-50 million, depending on how they are classified, the Berbers have influenced the culture and religion of Roman North Africa and played key roles in the spread of Islam and its culture in North Africa, Spain, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Taken together, these dynamics have over time converted to redefine the field of Berber identity and its socio-political representations and symbols, making it an even more important issue in the 21st century. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Berbers contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 200 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, places, events, institutions, and aspects of culture, society, economy, and politics. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Berbers.

This book is a comprehensive investigation of the overarching themes which lie at the heart of the morphosyntax of Berber. This includes a grammatical description of parts of speech, the inflectional classes of nouns, the construct state, word order, clitics, and valency. These topics are investigated within the minimalist approach to syntactic theory. One of the most significant findings of the book is that Tarifit Berber is claimed to have gone through a grammatical shift in word order from verb-subject-object (VSO), as displayed by the major studied Berber varieties, to a topic-prominent system. Novel analyses are also proposed for clitics and the causative system, in order to bring these grammatical aspects within the range of current theories.

Book excerpt: Hausa is the numerically most important member of the Chadic language family and is spoken by over 35 million people. It is the mayor language of northern Nigeria and southern Niger, nowadays the language of sedentary people. In contrast to that Tuareg, a Berber language, is mostly a nomadʹs language. Linguistic contacts between Tuareg and Hausa have not remained unnoticed by previous scholars. The great event in Hausa-Berber studies occurred in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the Hausaist Claude Gouffé wrote a number of articles concerning Tuareg-Hausa interferences. After Goufféʹs study, the most important contributions to the question of Tuareg loanwords in Hausa were made by Neil Skinner, which culminated in his "Hausa Comparative Dictionary" (1996). The present study follows the general lines set out by Gouffé and, to the lesser degree, Skinner. Its core part, chapter III.1, is an analytical list of about one hundred items which are considered certain Tuareg loans in Hausa. This list contains many etymologies already proposed by Gouffé and Skinner, but half of it are new proposals. In chapter III.2, some 50 uncertain etymologies are discussed. Some groups of etyma, which have specific histories, are studied in a separate chapter (chapter II). This comprises a study of words for domestic animals, which is mainly concerned with the evaluation of proposals by Skinner (1977, 1981), a study of early Islamic loans, a study of Berber loans which entered Hausa through Kanuri, and a special section on the etymon "camel". Chapter IV provides an analysis of the ways Tuareg loanwords were integrated to Hausa phonology and morphology. In chapter V, a number of subjects pertaining to Hausa linguistics are treated, which are drawn from the study of Tuareg loanwords, but which go beyond the analysis of loanwords only. -- Publisher description from http://www.koeppe.de (Oct. 4, 2011).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first work to address the question of what kinds of words get borrowed in a systematic and comparative perspective. It studies lexical borrowing behavior on the basis of a world-wide sample of 40 languages, both major languages and minor languages, and both languages with heavy borrowing and languages with little lexical influence from other languages. The book is the result of a five-year project bringing together a unique group of specialists of many different languages and areas. The introductory chapters provide a general up-to-date introduction to language contact at the word level, as well as a presentation of the project's methodology. All the chapters are based on samples of 1000-2000 words, elicited by a uniform meaning list of 1460 meanings. The combined database, comprising over 70,000 words, is published online at the same time as the book is published. For each word, information about loanword status is given in the database, and the 40 case studies in the book describe the social and historical contact situations in detail. The final chapter draws general conclusions about what kinds of words tend to get borrowed, what kinds of word meanings are particularly resistant to borrowing, and what kinds of social contact situations lead to what kinds of borrowing situations.

The authors have assembled a unique database of over 70,000 words from 40 languages from around the world, 18,000 of which are loanwords. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical reference work on Morocco must take as its subject al-maghrib al-aqsa (the far west) as the Arabic scholars have generally referred to the approximate region of present-day Morocco, roughly the north-west corner of Africa but at times including much of the Iberian peninsula, because the modern nation-state is a relatively recent creation owing much to events in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. External influences on Morocco tend to come across the narrow straits of Gibraltar to the north, from the east along the Mediterranean litoral, or up from the Sahara. In each case, access is constrained by geography and continued control from outside the region has been difficult to manage over the long term. Although many of the dynasties that came to power in Morocco conquered much broader regions, history and topology have so conspired that there is still more coherence to an historical focus on al-maghrib al-aqsa than is the case for most modern nation-states. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Morocco contains a chronology, an introduction, a glossary, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Morocco.

Book excerpt: Covering the political, social and historical background of each language, Dictionary of Languages offers a unique insight into human culture and communication. Every language with official status is included, as well as all those that have a written literature and 175 'minor' languages with special historical or anthropological interest. We see how, with the rapidly increasing uniformity of our culture as media's influence spreads, more languages have become extinct or are under threat of extinction. The text is highlighted by maps and charts of scripts, while proverbs, anecdotes and quotations reveal the features that make a language unique.
