Book excerpt: A Tangled Tale is a collection of 10 brief humorous stories, published serially between April 1880 and March 1885 in The Monthly Packet magazine. The stories, or Knots as Carroll calls them, present mathematical problems. In a later issue, Carroll gives the solution to a Knot and discusses readers' answers. The mathematical interpretations of the Knots are not always straightforward. In the December 1885 book preface Carroll wrote: 'The writer's intention was to embody in each Knot (like medicine so dexterously, but ineffectually, concealed in the jam of our early childhood) one or more mathematical questions – in Arithmetic, Algebra, or Geometry, as the case might be – for the amusement, and possible edification, of the fair readers of that magazine.'

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-This book contains a historical context, which helps us understand this literary work. We must pay special attention to those events that especially influenced the world of culture and art and also to those events that were especially reflected in literature, in the life of its writer or that affected it. There are many examples in which historical events have shaped the content and forms of literature, as well as this has often been the best testimony to the importance of certain events throughout history. This context is formed by everything that, in some way, influences the event when it happens. A fact is always tied to its time: that is, to its period.A Tangled Tale is a collection of 10 short humorous stories by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), published serially between April 1880 and March 1885 in The Monthly Packet magazine. Arthur B. Frost added illustrations when the series was printed in book form. The stories, or knots as Carroll calls them, present mathematical problems. In a later issue, Carroll gives the solution to a Knot and discusses the readers' responses. The mathematical interpretations of knots are not always easy. Teasing from readers who responded wrongly, giving their names, was not always well received.

Book excerpt: When the famous South African fish scientist Professor JLB Smith published Old Fourlegs – The Story of the Coelacanth in 1956 he created an international sensation. After all, this 400-million-year-old fish, known only from fossil remains, was thought to have become extinct around 66 million years ago! JLB Smith’s dramatic account of the discovery of the first and second coelacanths in 1938 and 1952 turned him into a cult figure and put South African science on the world map. His book was eventually published in six English editions and translated into nine foreign languages. Mike Bruton’s The Annotated Old Fourlegs includes a facsimile reprint of the original book, to which he has added notes and images in the margins that provide an interesting and revealing commentary on Smith’s text, as well as new introductory and explanatory chapters that bring the coelacanth story up to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Published on April Fool's Day, 1876, Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark remains one of the most amusing and bizarre works of modern verse. Carroll, who completed this classic poem eleven years after the publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, invites readers along on a fictitious hunt to determine who - or what - the Snark actually is." "Now, over 130 years later, Martin Gardner, the extraordinary "philosophical scrivener," returns to the Snark with a trove of new annotations and illustrations, offering readers fresh insights into Carroll's existential play of fancy and philosophy." "Henry Holiday's original drawings enhance the work, as does a new introduction by Adam Gopnik that communicates the relevance this strange and in many ways ominous poem holds for a new generation of readers."--BOOK JACKET.
