It depicts the plight of the French proletariat under the brutal oppression of t+E3he French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, and the corresponding savage brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution. It follows the lives of several protagonists through these events, most notably Charles Darnay, a French once-aristocrat who falls victim to the indiscriminate wrath of the revolution despite his virtuous nature, and Sydney Carton, a dissipated English barrister who endeavours to redeem his ill-spent life out of love for Darnay's wife, Lucie Manette.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated version of A Christmas Carol includes the full original novel, an author's biography and an in-depth analysis. This novel is a great story, that even written as a Christmas story, is just as entertaining all year long, and should definitely be read by anyone who loved fictive classics! The tale begins on a "cold, bleak, biting" Christmas Eve exactly seven years after the death of Ebenezer Scrooge's business partner, Jacob Marley. Scrooge is "a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner" who has no place in his life for kindness, compassion or charity. He hates Christmas, calling it "humbug." Returning home that evening, Scrooge is visited by Marley's ghost: he warns Scrooge to change his ways lest he undergo the same miserable afterlife as himself... Charles Dickens (1812-1870) has been called "the man who invented Christmas." "A Christmas Carol" is a long novella he wrote in 1843.

Gather the family around for a wonderful journey through time with this life affirming tale, excellent for reading aloud on Christmas Eve. You know the story..... Ebenezer Scrooge is a bitter old man who "will keep Christmas in my own way", which is not at all. People cringe when they see him coming. Dogs cower. But that is all about to change. He is visited by the ghost of his deceased partner, Jacob Marley, dragging the chains he has forged for himself in life, and learns that it is not too late for him. In "A Christmas Carol," Scrooge is visited by three more spirits that Christmas eve. His past, his present and his future. Each take him on a fantastic journey through time and space, showing him how his ways are wrong, and what will happen if he doesn't change. Scrooge goes through subtle changes at first, is humbled by the spirits, and then he is transformed from a bitter man to a caring human being. His new found appreciation of mankind is contagious. In the end, "A Christmas Carol" teaches that the changes not just so he can have a better after life, but because he really cares about life and humanity. A timeless classic, "Christmas Carol" has much to teach us today!

Book excerpt: *This book was previously released under the title "A Tale of Two Cities: A Reader's Companion."* You've read "A Tale of Two Cities"-perhaps more than once. But what are gaols, bumpers, tocsins, farmer-generals, and the Court of King's Bench? Where are Shooter's Hill, Temple Bar, and La Force, and who on earth was Mrs. Southcott? And did all those starving French people have baguettes in mind when they wanted bread? "The Annotated A Tale of Two Cities" is not a literary analysis of Dickens's novel, but a source of information for the new reader, the longterm fan, and the student, about things, people, places, and events mentioned in the text. In 780 notes to the unabridged novel, historical author and independent scholar Susanne Alleyn explains Dickens's references to things and places familiar to 19th-century Londoners, illustrates his many literary allusions and Victorian expressions, and provides an in-depth, factual background to his gripping but often misleading depiction of the French Revolution-a period that owes much of its distorted image today to the popularity of "A Tale of Two Cities" itself.

Book excerpt: A Christmas Carol The full title of Charles Dickens' most famous work is technically A Prose Christmas Carol, being a Christmas ghost story. This novel was published on December 19, 1843, and the first print run of 6,000 copies sold out on Christmas Eve of that year. The publication of the first edition was fraught with complications, and although the book was met with positive reviews, earnings on the book fell far short of Dickens's expectations, and financial stress caused divisions between Dickens and the original publisher, Chapman & Hall.

Book excerpt: In his "Ghostly little book," Charles Dickens invents the modern concept of Christmas Spirit and offers one of the world's most adapted and imitated stories. We know Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, not only as fictional characters, but also as icons of the true meaning of Christmas in a world still plagued with avarice and cynicism.

Book excerpt: More than a 100 years after his death, Charles Dickens is still entertaining readers with his classic "A Christmas Carol," the timeless classic which popularized the terms "Merry Christmas," "Tiny Tim," and "Scrooge"-in addition to influencing the way much of the world celebrates Christmas. Charles Dickens, (1812-1870), was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and one of the most popular of all time. He created some of literature's most iconic characters, with the theme of social reform running throughout his work. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print. Much of his work first appeared in periodicals and magazines in serialised form, a popular way of publishing fiction at the time. Other writers would complete entire novels before serial publication commenced, but Dickens often wrote his in parts, in the order they were meant to appear. The practice lent his stories a particular rhythm, punctuated by one "cliffhanger" after another, to keep the public eager for the next installment. His work has been praised for its mastery of prose, and for its teeming gallery of unique personalities, by writers such as George Gissing and G. K. Chesterton, though the same characteristics have prompted others, such as Henry James and Virginia Woolf, to criticize him for sentimentality and implausibility.
