Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Systematic Account of the Prairie-Dogs While at times virtually omnivorous, the prairie-dog finds its principal food in grasses and other green plants. Roots and stems are eaten as well as the tender leaves. In times of scant vegetation, or during a drought, the villages are almost destitute of plant life, so closely is every living bit cropped. Book excerpt: The authors synthesize the results of their long-running study of Gunnison’s prairie dogs (Cynomys gunnisoni), one of the keystone species of the short-grass prairie ecosystem. By examining the complex factors behind prairie dog decline, we can begin to understand the problems inherent in our adversarial relationship with the natural world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Systematic Revision of Fossil Prairie Dogs With Descriptions of Two New Species For this revision, I examined over 400 fossil (pre Holocene) prairie dog Specimens and Recent samples Of five extant species. My study focussed on lower jaws with teeth because they are abundant and diagnostic as fossils. Relatively complete skulls, uncommon as fossils, were considered when avail able. Isolated teeth were only utilized when other, more complete specimens were rare or absent at a locality. Post-cranial elements were not studied. Thoroughly revised and updated, Mammals of Colorado, Second Edition is a comprehensive reference on the nine orders and 128 species of Colorado's recent native fauna, detailing each species' description, habitat, distribution, population ecology, diet and foraging, predators and parasites, behavior, reproduction and development, and population status. An introductory chapter on Colorado's environments, a discussion of the development of the fauna over geologic time, and a brief history of human knowledge of Coloradan mammals provide ecological and evolutionary context. The most recent records of the state's diverse species, rich illustrations (including detailed maps, skull drawings, and photographs), and an extensive bibliography make this book a must-have reference. Amateur and professional naturalists, students, vertebrate biologists, and ecologists as well as those involved in conservation and wildlife management in Colorado will find value in this comprehensive volume.

This book was released on 1923 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The naturalist frequently finds that to learn to identify species is a most difficult task, and yet nothing is more important to his work. He finds that species are not separated merely on shape and colour, but on structural peculiarities which frequently are connected with particular habits. This is especially the case in vertebrate animals, which in Great Britain, with its very limited number of forms, may be identified in a haphazard manner by elimination. This is impossible in a country where different climatic areas interdigitate and where there are many species, as the United States, which for the purpose of the naturalist is a continent. Here Prof. H. S. Pratt ?fills the bill ?by his ?Vertebrate Animals of the United States,? which, however, omits birds. A short account of each group is given, the anatomical features dividing it up into sub-groups and families being usually illustrated. Where neces-sary, special features for families are described and then follow keys to the genera, descriptions of the same and keys to their species. The whole closes with a good bibliography and a glossary of technical terms. The short descriptions of each species, with mention of their geographical distributions and habitats, are excellent, and the tabulation of the sub-species most useful. We learn that there are about 600 species of freshwater fishes, 70 of newts and 61 of frogs and toads we are given a key by which their tadpoles and eggs can be identified-300 reptiles and a wide series of mammals belonging to 9 orders. We characterise this publication as a book for ready reference, such as should be on the shelves of all American naturalists.
