Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Iron Railroad Bridges for Japan There are probably 300 miles of iron bridges in the country now, and perhaps in the neighborhood of 700 miles of wooden bridges. I am speaking now of railway bridges. The construction of road bridges is quite a separate and distinct industry. It is the price of iron that regulates the cost of a bridge; the cost of labor has very little to do with it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Railroad Bridges The existing and the accepted types of bridges in use to-day on American railroads being the results of a true evolution, no attempt to present them intelligently would be complete without a brief sketch of the past history of bridge; in America. The rapid development of the new world and the enormous number of bridges that has been built within the limits of the nineteenth century, have furnished us with a wide experience, from which we have been able to select the good and reject much that was bad or undesirable. The pioneer life, not only of the earlier settlers, but of each genera tion to the present day, has developed to a high degree the energies, ingenuity and self-reliance of the American people. These pioneers were compelled to be men of all trades. Their limited resources and the lack of time or opportunity to seek for past precedents, impelled them to solve each problem anew. They, thought with vigor and were not fettered with the trammels of science, before they were capable of ex erting their mental faculties to advantage, as Sir Joseph Banks wrote to Thomas Paine in 1788.[from transactions or american society or CIVIL engineers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Detailed Design of a Railroad Bridge The stresses in the structure are caused by its own or dead weight and by the live or moving load. The dead load may be divided into two parts, the weight of the oor system consisting of rails, ties, track fastenings, stringers and oor beams, and the trusses and bracing. Excerpts from Cooper's specifications relating to these loadings are the following. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Iron Bridges, Roofs, Buildings, &C written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron Bridges, Roofs, Buildings, &C: Manufactured by the Moseley Iron Building Works, No; 53 Washington Street, Boston The supporting parts of the Bridge are two Arches, one on each side of the roadway. These Arches are hollow, and are triangular or three-sided; made of wrought plate or boiler iron, by riveting three plates together at their edges. [See Fig. IV. on the diagram, which shows the hollow Arch, with Suspension Bar passing through it.] In no other form can iron be arranged to bear a greater burden than in this. By actual tests, every inch of iron in the cross section of the Arches will bear 15,000 lbs.; but in practice, we provide for a weight of not less than four times the required burden, calculated, moreover, at a pressure of 7,000 lbs. per square inch of section. From foot to foot of each Arch goes the Chord [See Figs. I., II. and V.] This is double, and binds securely the feet of the Arch to each other, so that there is no thrust or outward pressure of the Arches to require heavy abutments. The only pressure upon the masonry is vertical. In Highway Bridges, the cross-section of the Chords has one-third the number of inches in that of the Arches; and in Railroad Bridges, one-half the number of inches in cross-section. The tensile strength of an inch of iron averages 60,000 lbs.: but, as will be seen, our calculations are based upon a tensile strain of 21,000 lbs. per square inch (in Railroad Bridges 14,000 lbs.), for four times the actual burthen. The Chords are held level, or in line, by Suspension Bars. [See Figs. I. and IV.] These pass through the Arches; thence downward between the Counter-Arches (to which they are riveted), and support the Chord. They are placed at intervals of about 23 inches, giving 54 Bars in a fifty-feet Bridge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Details of Railroad Truss-Bridges: Thesis The standards and specifications investigated were those of the following railroads: Northern Pacific; atchison, topeka and Santa Fe; Illinois Central; Wabash; and Michigan Central. Besides these, several partially complete standards of other leading rail roads ih the United States were considered. The standards and specifications of the American Bridge Company and the Phoenix Bridge Company were also investigated. The excellent literature in engineering magazines and text-boons has been drawn upon for much valuable information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron Truss Bridges for Railroads: Methods of Calculating Strains, With a Comparison of the Most Prominent Truss Bridges, and New Formulas for Bridge Computations; Also, the Economical Angles for Struts and Ties Having been accidentally put in the way of studying truss bridges, and having at first labored under great difficulties from inability to procure clear and simple instructions how to calculate strains in trusses, being compelled to work upward from the simplest combinations, the author of this work has thought that the results of his labors might be found useful for others striving after the same object. Finding that the usual formulas for the strength of pillars were not in suitable shape for use in bridge calculation, they were remodelled to suit all cases in practice, assuming Hodgkinson's formulas to be reliable. To determine the exact value of these formulas, much time was devoted to an analysis of the experiments on which they are based, with the results given in the text. In order to ascertain the best form of combination in trusses, a very close calculation was made on the seven best-known forms of truss in use in this country, every care being taken to subject all to identically the same conditions. After finishing these calculations an effort was made to ascertain the economical angles for struts and ties, and from them to determine the theoretically best combination, and the reasons for the observed differences in the trusses examined. All the steps in each investigation are given in full, that every one may judge for himself of each step. It is hoped that even those who may differ from the conclusions in reference to trusses, will yet find the work valuable for its formulas, which, as strict deductions from Hodgkinson, are entitled to receive the same credit that is universally accorded to the originals. The author will be fully satisfied if his efforts to solve the problems in question should be of service in guiding others to their complete solution.
