Book Synopsis Evolution of Synthetic Pathways by : Tse-Lok Ho
Download or read book Evolution of Synthetic Pathways written by Tse-Lok Ho and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic synthesis is essential to creating new materials. While synthetic design has reached a high level of sophistication, many details remain unplannable. To become proficient in organic synthesis, one must study case histories in the same way as a lawyer does. Attention must be paid to overcoming stumbling blocks as one prepares himself to meet future challenges of similar kinds. This book discusses many important syntheses, with emphasis on the need for detours and ways leading back to the main pathways. It thus focuses on one of the most important aspects of organic synthesis, which virtually none of the synoptic literature addresses.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Natural Products Chemistry by : Rensheng Xu
Download or read book Introduction to Natural Products Chemistry written by Rensheng Xu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-07-20 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural products chemistry—the chemistry of metabolite products of plants, animals and microorganisms—is involved in the investigation of biological phenomena ranging from drug mechanisms to gametophytes and receptors and drug metabolism in the human body to protein and enzyme chemistry. Introduction to Natural Products Chemistry has collected the most important research results of natural product chemistry in China. It overviews the basic principles of isolation, structure, and characteristics of natural products and illustrates current research techniques of structure elucidation with real-life examples of wet chemistry and spectroscopic analyses (UV, IR, MS, and NMR, especially 2d-NMR, HMBC, and HMQC), bioactivity, biosynthesis, and chemical synthesis. Specifically, this book covers: Extraction and isolation of natural products Chemistry of fungal products Alkaloids, sesquiterpenoids, diterpenes, and saponins Amino acids and peptides Flavonoids, anthraquinones, coumarins, and lignans Marine natural products Structural modification of active principles from traditional Chinese medicine Chemical synthesis of natural products Although natural products chemistry has produced enormous results and made great contributions to human health, industry, and agriculture, only a fraction of natural resources have been rigorously studied. Chinese natural products are a gold mine for further exploration with modern technology and methods. This book represents the continuing collaboration between the fields of natural products chemistry, medicine, biology, and agriculture which will continue to discover and implement novel chemical products from natural sources.

Book Synopsis Principles of Asymmetric Synthesis by : R.E. Gawley
Download or read book Principles of Asymmetric Synthesis written by R.E. Gawley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-11-21 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is chiral. Most of the molecules in it are chiral, and asymmetric synthesis is an important means by which enantiopure chiral molecules may be obtained for study and sale. Using examples from the literature of asymmetric synthesis (more than 1300 references), the aim of this book is to present a detailed analysis of the factors that govern stereoselectivity in organic reactions. It is important to note that the references were each individually checked by the authors to verify relevance to the topics under discussion. The study of stereoselectivity has evolved from issues of diastereoselectivity, through auxiliary-based methods for the synthesis of enantiomerically pure compounds (diastereoselectivity followed by separation and auxiliary cleavage), to asymmetric catalysis. In the latter instance, enantiomers (not diastereomers) are the products, and highly selective reactions and modern purification techniques allow preparation - in a single step - of chiral substances in 99% ee for many reaction types. After an explanation of the basic physical-organic principles of stereoselectivity, the authors provide a detailed, annotated glossary of stereochemical terms. A chapter on "Analytical Methods" provides a critical overview of the most common methods for analysis of stereoisomers. The authors then follow the 'tried-and-true' format of grouping the material by reaction type. Thus, there are four chapters on carbon-carbon bond forming reactions (enolate alkylations, organometal additions to carbonyls, aldol and Michael reactions, and cycloadditions and rearrangements), one chapter on reductions and hydroborations (carbon-hydrogen bond forming reactions), and one on oxidations (carbon-oxygen and carbon-nitrogen bond forming reactions). Leading references are provided to natural product synthesis that have been accomplished using a given reaction as a key step. In addition to tables of examples that show high selectivity, a transition state analysis is presented to explain - to the current level of understanding - the stereoselectivity of each reaction. In one case (Cram's rule) the evolution of the current theory is detailed from its first tentative (1952) postulate to the current Felkin-Anh-Heathcock formalism. For other reactions, only the currently accepted rationale is presented. Examination of these rationales also exposes the weaknesses of current theories, in that they cannot always explain the experimental observations. These shortcomings provide a challenge for future mechanistic investigations.

Book Synopsis General and Synthetic Methods by : G. Pattenden
Download or read book General and Synthetic Methods written by G. Pattenden and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 1981 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
