Book excerpt: "This work is an examination and discussion of selected problems and solutions that are present among beginning clarinetists. Number of selected publications by prominent clarinet performers and educators, as well as my personal experiences as a student and a teacher served as sources for the information presented in this work. The work is categorized in to six chapters, each focusing on a particular technical problem. Within each of the chapters is found an introduction to the topic with detailed explanation and illustration that is then followed in subcategories by number of common problems and problem solving methods pertaining to the discussed concepts. As a guiding factor behind focusing on a particular technical aspect in this work, was my personal experience as a clarinet teacher and student. In my private studio, I have observed and noted most common technical problems encountered by my beginning clarinet students. With that information, I have researched the given topics through the number of pedagogical publications noting the suggested problem solving methods, and then I implementing them in my lessons. To further understand the problems, I referred to my personal experiences as clarinet student and the teaching methods used by my professors."--

Book excerpt: This reference guide will allow the teacher of beginning clarinet students to quickly see differences among many beginning clarinet method books in an objective manner, thereby helping the teacher to select the appropriate method book for each student. Even though most music teachers are, by definition, advanced musicians themselves, the task of teaching the beginning clarinetist can still be a serious challenge. Inexperienced teachers are routinely confronted with problems in their students' techniques that the instructor may have long since corrected in their own performance, and they often do not remember the exact manner in which these wrong techniques were resolved. An appropriate method book can solve this problem. Currently, most knowledge of method books is obtained via subjective and cursory advice from fellow teachers or from publishers' marketing catalogs sent to band directors. There exists no comprehensive compendium of method books for clarinet instruction. This treatise endeavors to fill that void. Its purpose is to be an objective comparative guide to the many method books available to the private clarinet instructor, an easily accessible reference for researching method books for beginning clarinetists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There are approximately 195 countries in the world, each with their own ethnic traditions including music, art, and literature. Why then does current clarinet pedagogy draw mainly from Western European cultures? This thesis will use traditional folk music from around the world to help young clarinetists build strong fundamentals, while also instilling an appreciation of diverse musical cultures. Specifically, "A Cultural Approach to Teaching Clarinet Fundamentals," will address basic challenges such as embouchure, hand and finger position, crossing the break, tone control and dynamics, and articulation. All of those concepts will be addressed through exercises based on a wide selection of folk songs from different countries. This paper will use the author's personal experience as a student and teacher. In both settings, the author came to realize that most students become deeply engaged and eager to learn when they familiarize themselves with the culture and the ethnic group that is behind the music that they are studying. The specific excerpts and/or folks songs used in this thesis have been adapted for the B♭ soprano clarinet."--

Book excerpt: Following is the concept and content for a holistic clarinet method. Prior research of current in print and available in the United States clarinet methods revealed several gaps in the material taught. All of them had a focus on music literacy, while few had a focus on musical creativity, and none of them had a focus on aural skills. As a beginning student, I feel I would have greatly benefitted from my methods and teachers having a greater focus on the creative aspect of music making, and on the ability to play by ear. As a teacher, I want to offer my own students the opportunity to be creative and explore the sonic range of their instrument, both in the conventional western classical clarinet style, and in unconventional avant-garde styles. Students will be encouraged to listen to and play musical styles outside of western classical music. In my studies of contemporary music performance on the clarinet, I have found a great amount of cross over between "extended techniques" and interesting sounds that beginning students accidentally make when playing their instrument. Often, to achieve an unconventional sound on the clarinet, the clarinetist changes their technique in a way that goes against traditional teachings. Variations on air support, finger positions, and embouchure are a few ways to achieve unconventional sounds. These variations are quite similar to the way an untrained beginning clarinetist may approach playing the instrument. This method builds upon this brief prior knowledge of the student and unconventional sounds are explored as opportunities for students to develop a greater understanding of conventional sounds. Unconventional sounds are also used as a way for students to be creative on their instrument and playful with their approach to making music, giving them a sense of ownership and artistry. Through playful interaction, this method will lay the foundation for future deliberate practice through reflective journal entries and reminders to take a break when necessary to combat practice fatigue, and encourage focused practice between breaks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is pertinent that I should present an analysis of the stimulii, that have directed and urged me to choose this particular field of research. I earnestly desire to submit a thesis which may be recognized as of immediate value to others, particularly to students and teachers of the clarinet. For many years I have searched libraries for information concerning the instrument on which I have striven for excellence and for music suitable for performance on this most versatile instrument. There is an adequate supply of methods, exercise books, end etudes prepared by skillful performers and recognized teachers. However, no method for selecting solos as to grade and quality has been made for students in progressive stages of development. Furthermore, a great amount of the very best music for the clarinet has been ignored through lack of knowledge of its existence. No informative index of clarinet music exists. The volume of clarinet music is contained ordinarily in two or three files in first class music stores and is neither complete nor representative of the quality of music written for the instrument. There is an urgent need for a classification of clarinet solos that will set forth fine music, which may be used in correlation with standard methods and teaching procedures. An interest in solo literature, classic and modern, directs groups of proficient soloists toward chamber music. Our modern instrumental program is training great sectional choirs of wind instruments. Those students who aspire to more finished interpretation in solo sections and those teachers who desire a means of motivating the student, find in chamber music pleasant means for working out technical problems and for stimulating a fine feeling of musicianship. In order that this new device may be put to its most efficient use, it is imperative that a complete knowledge of the best works written for each instrument be known, and they should be graded accurately so as to be quickly adapted to the student's stage of development. There is a need for a "Method of Clarinet Solo Literature Selection." This thesis is an effort to fill that need.
