Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small businesses are critically important to the current U.S. economy. This is especially true for Vermont. In 2010, small Vermont businesses represented 96.3% of all employers accounting for approximately 60% of the private sector workforce (SBA, 2013). Entrepreneurs are drawn to Vermont for the quality of life, progressive atmosphere, and its distinction for fostering companies with socially, ethically and environmentally driven missions. Succession is an important stage in a company's life-cycle. Thus, succession planning is a crucial activity for founders, owners or high-level managers, (here after referred to as leaders,) in which to participate. This study explores the current environment of the intersection of social responsibility and succession planning. In order to examine the confluence of social responsibility value retention and succession planning, each aspect of a leader's intentions needed to be understood. Thus, this study incorporates: a description and analysis of leader's social responsibility attitudes, intentions and behaviors; a description and analysis of leader's succession planning attitudes, intentions and behaviors; and an analysis of the commonalities and distinctions found in the combination of social responsibility and succession planning attitudes, intentions and behaviors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with small business leaders from September through December, 2013. The interview sample was intentionally weighted towards business leaders who are known for being socially responsible, due to their expected ability to speak more knowledgeably about social responsibility and its implications for their business. Findings indicate there is a lack of consensus among leaders in defining social responsibility values/orientation. Most leaders interviewed are thinking about succession planning and how their value-orientation might fit into that process. Applying the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study attempted to identify how attitudes towards social responsibility would impact the leaders' intentions and ultimately their behavior in succession planning.

It provides a foundation for the further development of small business social responsibility as a scholarly subject and crucially important practice and policy field.

This study highlights the inadequacies of social and ethical reporting by business, both in terms of the ad-hoc nature of the information currently reported, and the absence of internal reporting. It will serve as evidence to companies, that producing a glossy report does not necessarily equal social responsibility. * Explores the problems faced by firms seeking to develop their own social performance strategies * Explores corporate governance issues * Offers a grounded theory approach, involving full taping and transcribing of all interviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of social accounting and social responsibility of business has grown considerably in recent years in both the educational and professional context and has taken on an interdisciplinary aspect. This can be attributed to the numerous financial scandals and often ruthless activity of the corporate world in the pursuit of profit that demonstrate questionable ethical and moral behaviour from business and professional practice. This important and timely new text introduces and explains the key ideas of accounting for society, the historical development of corporate social responsibility, accountability and ethics and their importance to everyday life. It then goes on to consider in detail:* What constitutes social accounting and why it's important* The applicability of social accounting and social responsibility in the private sector, public sector and third sectors. * Examples of critical issues when determining socially responsible investments, the role of tax in a fair society and global economy and ensuring professional integrity. * Further examples that demonstrate questionable ethical and moral behaviour from both business and professional practice are threaded throughout the book. The book concludes with a discussion of the realities and myths of social accounting in relation to tomorrow's accounting and society's future. It will be an essential guide for students of business and accounting at all levels as well as a powerful reference resource for professional and managers in the financial and other business sectors. Accompanying the text is a fully worked suite of tutor resource materials consisting of solutions to in-text exercises and PowerPoint slides for each chapter.

Book excerpt: This textbook is designed for all students on undergraduate accounting and business courses or MBA finance programmes. It explains the case for adopting new forms of non-financial and socially-oriented disclosures in company reports. The book presents a systematic examination of social accounting. It explains each type of non-traditional accounting in terms of historical development, main theoretical bases, theoretical and practical models, and extent of current practice. Whereas traditional financial accounting is a partial information system based largely on 19th century ideas of ownership and markets, this book explains the non-traditional approaches which can enhance the information content of company reports, making them more useful to groups other than the usual audience of shareholders and creditors.
