Book excerpt: This study examined the perceptions of gifted middle school students who attended one of two middle school gifted service options as they transitioned into high school. Gifted middle school students from either a center-based gifted service option or a school-based gifted service option from middle schools in a suburban district in Central Virginia participated in the study. Participants who had completed three consecutive years within the gifted service option were purposively selected for the study. Students completed a pre-transition survey at the end of their eighth grade year and a post-transition survey early in their ninth grade year. The survey asked students to identify their high school program choice and provide a reason for their choice in order to establish high school program choice trends among the different gifted service options. The surveys also assessed the differences in the students' perceptions of the transition from middle school into the chosen high school as it pertains to academic, organizational, and social constructs of the high school program. Students from the center-based gifted program were more likely to choose to attend one of the regional Governor's schools, and chose to do so because of personal interest and the perception of academic rigor. The students from the school-based gifted service options were more likely to choose to attend one of the district's specialty centers, and chose to do so because of personal interest and parental encouragement. Prior to transitioning into high school, both the center-based gifted and the school based gifted students had high perceptions of the grades they earned. However, after transitioning into high school, only the center-based gifted students continued to have a high perception of grades earned. Prior to the transition into high school the center-based gifted students had higher perceptions of the academic, organizational, and social constructs. Differences were not found among the post-transition perceptions of the academic, organizational, and social constructs between the two gifted middle school groups; however, the extremely small sample size of the post-transition survey may have impacted these results.

Book excerpt: This qualitative case study was designed to discover teachers' perceptions related to the academic and social effects of heterogeneous grouping of seventh and eighth grade students in a large, suburban school district in Pennsylvania. The participants were 7th and 8th grade teachers of core academic and elective areas in 2 junior high schools. An analysis of the data was based upon the responses of 31 teachers from two junior high schools that completed an online survey instrument. The survey allowed respondents to indicate their level of agreement with fourteen statements as well as 6 open-ended questions designed to obtain further teacher insight regarding the academic and social effects of heterogeneous grouping. Additionally, 7 teachers participated in a personal interview, which allowed participants to further expand upon their survey and open-ended responses. Results of the study indicated participants identified heterogeneous grouping as having a negative academic effect upon gifted and talented seventh and eighth grade students. Teachers identified heterogeneous grouping as having a negative effect upon gifted and talented students in the areas of engagement, pace of instruction, and achievement. Conversely, teachers identified heterogeneous grouping as having a positive effect upon gifted and talented students socially especially in the areas of self-esteem, leadership development, and social acceptance in high school. Implementation of homogeneous grouping in core academic areas as well as professional development specifically designed to teach gifted and talented students were recommended as the most effective methodology of instructing gifted and talented students.

Book excerpt: Research has been done comparing academic achievement of gifted students in diverse school environments, but little has been found about their perceptions as learners in these environments. The purpose of this action research study was to gain academic, social and emotional perceptions of six gifted and talented students in a self-contained elementary classroom. The author collected data through a perception survey, student and teacher interviews, and teacher observations. After collecting data for four weeks and analyzing it using the constant comparative method, the author found that the GT students were challenged in math, extracurricular activities were their favorite, they displayed positive peer interactions, and their perceptions of failure varied. This study will give insight to other educators about the perceptions of GT students in the elementary school setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does our society care about its children? This provocative and in-depth examination of violence in the lives of children uncovers the conditions and social policies that perpetuate violence. In addition, this volume forces us to look at other forms of violence confronting children in families, neighborhoods, and schools: ? The violence of poverty and homelessness ? The violence of environmentally induced childhood diseases ? The media and legislative "criminalization" of children and ? The increasing trend towards incarceration of youthful offenders. The pre-eminent contributors to this volume examine these issues from both historical and contemporary public policy perspectives. They address the myths and realities of youth violence and the impact of poverty, race, and gender. Prevailing ideas about punishment and retribution, the role of the state in terms of private or public responsibility, and the developmental needs of the child are all themes that frame the multiple advocacy perspectives presented by these cogent essays.
