The masterly survey of Bhagwati provides great intuition about trade theoretical results and Chipman's three surveys present the mathematics of trade theory. These are very deep surveys from a mathematical point of view and show, for example, the Ricardian model as an application of Quasi-Concave programming and also the magnificent use of Sperner's Lemma for the odd and even intersections that occur in some problems in trade theory. There are also other surveys bringing the literature up to date and covering specific topics in trade theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This up-to-date synthesis of the basic tools and survey results in international trade theory is unique in giving factor mobility equal billing with goods trade, highlighting factor flows in the context of a mainstream approach to trade theory. The importance of the international flow of factors has grown in recent decades, primarily because of increasing returns, imperfect competition, multinational corporations, and labor migration; theories of factor mobility and trade in goods can no longer be lumped together. Using sophisticated techniques, as well as simple economic intuitions and easy-to-follow diagrams, Kar-yiu Wong systematically presents within unified frameworks all the basic analytical techniques involved in the theories of international trade and factor mobility. Wong also provides extensive coverage of such issues as interactions between international trade in goods and capital movement, external economies of scale, monopolistic competition and differentiated products, oligopoly, welfare economics of international trade, and policy analysis for various models, and he devotes two separate chapters to multinational corporations and international labor migration. New techniques and approaches to these issues are suggested, and new results obtained for many of them. For instance, the discussion of intra-industry trade in the presence of positive transport cost and arbitrage is new, as is the systematic examination of the relationship between international trade in goods and factor mobility with external economies of scale, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly. Of particular importance to trade theorists, these issues serve as the link between neoclassical and imperfect-competition models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has long been a need for a systematic introduction to the modern pure theory of international trade that would take the student through a careful introduction to the tools of analysis and the main logical propositions into the application of the theory to practical problems of international economic policy. Trade theory should be part and parcel of price theory, distinguished only by the fact that other countries form part of the natural opportunities--and natural constraints--that a country confronts in its efforts to bend nature to its desire to produce utility-yielding goods and services; but its exposition is often confused by the attachment of its expositors to obsolete problems and backward analytical techniques. This book covers in detail classical, neoclassical, and modern theories of international trade, with special attention to problems of equilibrium, growth, and welfare, and discusses the work of all major contributors in this field from Ricardo and Mill through Meade, Heckscher, and Ohlin, to the growth models of Johnson, Solow, and Uzawa. All problems are clearly stated and the easiest and most convenient solutions are sought in each case, with the more technical topics in the field discussed in several chapters and appendixes that may be omitted for less advanced students without interrupting the continuity of the book. The book's coverage is complete and entirely up-to-date. It is written primarily for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in international trade, but it will also serve as an important reference tool for professional economists working in this field and will be of considerable interest to students and practitioners dealing with problems of economic development and international business relationships more generally. Miltiades Chacholiades studied at the Athens School of Economics and Business Science in Athens, Greece, and received his doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has taught at New York University and the University of California in Los Angeles, and is presently Professor of Economics at Georgia State University. His articles have been published in a number of international professional economic journals.

Book excerpt: Trade flows and trade policies need to be properly quantified to describe, compare, or follow the evolution of policies between sectors or countries or over time. This is essential to ensure that policy choices are made with an appropriate knowledge of the real conditions. This practical guide introduces the main techniques of trade and trade policy data analysis. It shows how to develop the main indexes used to analyze trade flows, tariff structures, and non-tariff measures. It presents the databases needed to construct these indexes as well as the challenges faced in collecting and processing these data, such as measurement errors or aggregation bias. Written by experts with practical experience in the field, A Practical Guide to Trade Policy Analysis has been developed to contribute to enhance developing countries' capacity to analyze and implement trade policy. It offers a hands-on introduction on how to estimate the distributional effects of trade policies on welfare, in particular on inequality and poverty. The guide is aimed at government experts engaged in trade negotiations, as well as students and researchers involved in trade-related study or research. An accompanying DVD contains data sets and program command files required for the exercises. Copublished by the WTO and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development

This book was released on 2012 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with two theories of international trade: the theory of comparative advantage, which is connected to the name David Ricardo and is dominating current trade theory, and Adam Smith’s theory of absolute advantage. Both theories are compared and their assumptions are scrutinised. The former theory is rejected on theoretical and empirical grounds in favour of the latter. On the basis of the theory of absolute advantage, developments of free international trade are examined, whereby the focus is on trade between industrial and underdeveloped countries. The main conclusions are that trade patterns are determined by absolute production cost advantages and that the gap between developed and poor countries is not reduced but rather increased by free trade.
