Book Synopsis A Surgeon's Lifetime by : David Watkin
Download or read book A Surgeon's Lifetime written by David Watkin and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2023-10-28 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘See one, do one, teach one’ was the basis of David Watkin’s training as a surgeon in the 1960s. By the time he became a consultant, he had ample experience but had received little supervision. He was determined to improve the experience for his juniors. Later, this led to chairmanship of the national committee responsible for training in general surgery. Not from a medical family and with no experience of serious illness or hospital, David had only decided to study medicine when in the sixth form. After training in Bristol, Leicester, Derby and Sheffield he was appointed a consultant in Leicester. He was then invited to be inaugural clinical sub-dean, in charge of setting up clinical teaching in the new Medical School. Comprising ‘guts, glands and arteries’, David relished the broad scope of general surgery, including emergencies. But surgery and the NHS were changing, with technological advances and surgical innovations. When general surgery evolved into specialties, he became a coloproctologist by day, though still a generalist at night. A member of the council of the Association of Surgeons, he was closely involved in these changes. Finally, he was elected president of the Association for 2000-1.

Book excerpt: Endocrine surgery - the subspecialty of general surgery involving diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands as well as the endocrine pancreas - is a rapidly growing field of medicine that has a rich and fascinating history. As recently as the mid-19th Century, surgery for thyroid goiter was described as "horrid butchery" and believed by many to be too dangerous for any surgeon to attempt. Through the ingenuity and tireless efforts of surgeons in Europe and the U.S., thyroidectomy became a safe and even elegant operation, one that renowned Johns Hopkins surgeon William Halsted would describe in 1926 as representing "the supreme triumph of the surgeon's art." In this unique and captivating book, these and other seminal stories from the history of endocrine surgery are vividly retold by the current leaders in the field.

Book Synopsis The Silicone Breast Implant Story by : Marsha L. Vanderford
Download or read book The Silicone Breast Implant Story written by Marsha L. Vanderford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines one health issue -- breast implants -- across a series of contexts often thought to be separate -- media coverage, doctor-patient interaction, doctor-doctor professional communication, support group dialogues, public relations campaigns, and more. In so doing, it provides a narrative of how communication shapes the individual perceptions of health, government, and social policy concerning health care. At the core of the silicone breast implant controversy is the need for people to act amid uncertainty about the health risks involved. This need to weigh action in the midst of uncertain risk characterizes a large number of health issues. The attempts of patients, physicians, drug manufacturers, and others to seek and provide both information and influence makes communication central to these issues. Consequently, the questions explored in this volume will interest a diverse group of readers. This audience includes plastic surgeons in particular, physicians in general, and anyone involved with women's health issues. As the medical profession struggles with its identity amid changes in public attitudes, government regulations, and medical practices, this volume's findings concerning media portrayals of doctors and medical devices become even more important. Finally, this study reveals how interrelated public information and private decisions are, and how closely media and interpersonal relationships fit. Tracing one medical issue across interpersonal, organizational, public relations, and mediated forums has clearly demonstrated the multiple ways those communication channels overlap and inform one another.

Book Synopsis A Surgeon's Lessons, Learned and Lost by : John Raffensperger, MD

This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Raffensperger, MD, describes how doctors in the mid-20th century learned medicine in the autopsy room, the laboratory, and at bedside, training to become well-rounded general physicians. Since then, many doctors have specialized during medical school, depending on X-rays and blood tests, rather than listening and “laying on of hands.” Medicine became a de-personalized business, subject to greedy insurance executives and hospital administrators. “A compelling and candid account of how surgeons learn and refine their skills. John Raffensperger shares successes and failures, advances in medicine and surgery, the faults in today’s system, what we might learn from health care systems in other countries, and the pitfalls of hospital politics.” – Di Saggau, Island Sun newspaper, Santiva/Captiva Florida “A candid narrative of more than forty years in practice and teaching of a pioneering pediatric surgeon, infused with historical perspective of medical education and medical practice … Dr. Raffensperger has done it all over those years, developing new procedures, teaching medical students and residents at the bedside, serving as surgeon-in-chief at a leading center for pediatric surgery, the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, and authoring books … His concern for patients’ welfare shines through the book as he calls for fundamental reforms based on a single payer national health insurance.” – John Geyman, MD, Professor Emeritus of Family Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle “In the field of contemporary health care, it is generally acknowledged that Dr. John Raffensperger is one of the most eminent pediatric surgeons of our day… We are now lucky to see him produce a memoir … the portrayal of a life devoted to the care of sick children.” – F. Gonzalez-Crussi, MD, Emeritus Professor of Pathology, Northwestern University, Chicago
