Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Supplement to Accompany the Advanced Arithmetic in the California State Series Beyond the writing and reading of numbers - whole and decimal and the principles of addition, subtraction, multipli cation, and division, there is but little more than is involved in the questions of price, quantity, and cost, with which all school boys and girls are familiar. The first year's work with the advanced arithmetic is the most important, as it lays, or should lay, the foundation of all that follows. Download or read book How to Teach the Critical Difficulties of Arithmetic written by Mary A. Ward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach the Critical Difficulties of Arithmetic: To Accompany the California State Series Advanced Arithmetic; For Normal Students and Experienced Teaches The helps and suggestions given in this bulletin for teaching each of the topics of the State Series Advanced Arithmetic may be applied to the work of any arithmetic text. Teachers will find the miscellaneous questions and tests given at the end of each topic useful in many ways. They may be used as thorough reviews at the beginning of a new term or as tests for new pupils who enter late in the term. Such tests should help to determine the points in which a pupil's knowledge is deficient. The classification of the problems of pages 18 through 165 of the State text will be of much service to the teacher who is using this portion of the textbook. High school students desiring to enter the Normal School, will find that the bulletin outlines the scope and type of the arithmetic work with which students must be familiar before they can be entrusted with the teaching of this subject in the classes of the training school. Students will be expected to be familiar with the tests, suggestions and methods of work given in this book. Besides the subjects treated in this outline, normal students are expected to be familiar with the following 1. The system of addition combinations as given in chapter three of the State primary text. 2. The method of finding the quotient figures in long division. (Advanced State Text, pages 63-67.) 3. Additive method of subtraction. (Advanced Text, pages 21-22.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Advanced Arithmetic (Classic Reprint) written by William W. Speer and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Arithmetic The purpose of this book is to aid the teacher in making conditions favorable for the contact of the learner with mathematical realities. Since the simplest as well as the most complex relations become known only through mental activity in comparing, attention is given to an environment which shall continually induce this activity. The comparison of magnitudes includes all the other operations of arithmetic. This is apparent when we reflect that all advance in knowing is by progressive acts of analysis and synthesis. Whether we compare by means of the object or by means of its symbol, the mind should still be free to move from the vague to the definite through its own acts. In the first book of this series it was said: "That quantity is a ratio between terms which are themselves relative is a truth which has often been pointed out, but which the work of the schools shows to be felt by few." In the minds of many bred upon the language of mathematics, the mode of expression has acquired an independence which excludes the reality. The presentation of relative magnitude as a subject of study in the elementary school has, however, met with gratifying response. Book Synopsis Democracy and Education by : John Dewey
Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
