Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of peer-delivered instruction using the Corrective Reading and Reading Success programs on the reading achievement of 16 high school students enrolled in a reading remediation course. Students received both models of instruction from high-school age tutors as their core reading/writing curriculum throughout the semester. Over the course of 19 weeks two high school classes of different grades, gender, and skill levels were instructed using the Corrective Reading and Reading Success direct instruction models. Pretest-posttest scores on the Gates-MacGinite Reading Test - Fourth Edition and questionnaires on reading enjoyment, reading comprehension, and use of phonics decoding skills indicated no statistically significant gains for either group and that neither students nor tutors significantly rated the trial a success. Study implications and limitations are discussed"--Document.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This quantitative study was conducted to examine the impact of Empower 3000® a commercial based reading program on 90 students' academic achievement, reading comprehension scores and motivation to read in a mid-west suburban school district in Illinois. A Factorial ANOVA performed on the all participants pre and post level set® scores showed a significant statistical difference for students assigned to the experimental group. The improvement in Lexile® scores correlated to improvement in reading comprehension scores for students randomly assigned to the experimental group. A Factorial ANOVA was performed on all participants Motivation for Reading Information Books Questionnaire and the findings did not show a statistically significant improvement for students assigned to the experimental or control group. Empower 3000® did not impact ninth grade students' motivation to read. A Mann U Whitney was performed on all participants grades earned in English courses, and did not show a statistically significant difference for students assigned to the experimental group. The control group earned higher grades in English, hence an implication for the paramount role of the classroom teacher implementing the traditional curriculum. The findings from this study suggested a need for further research on the impact of motivation on ninth grade students reading comprehension and the impact of teacher efficacy, personalization of the environment on students' reading achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education is a hot topic. From the stage of presidential debates to tonight's dinner table, it is an issue that most Americans are deeply concerned about. While there are many strategies for improving the educational process, we need a way to find out what works and what doesn't work as well. Educational assessment seeks to determine just how well students are learning and is an integral part of our quest for improved education. The nation is pinning greater expectations on educational assessment than ever before. We look to these assessment tools when documenting whether students and institutions are truly meeting education goals. But we must stop and ask a crucial question: What kind of assessment is most effective? At a time when traditional testing is subject to increasing criticism, research suggests that new, exciting approaches to assessment may be on the horizon. Advances in the sciences of how people learn and how to measure such learning offer the hope of developing new kinds of assessments-assessments that help students succeed in school by making as clear as possible the nature of their accomplishments and the progress of their learning. Knowing What Students Know essentially explains how expanding knowledge in the scientific fields of human learning and educational measurement can form the foundations of an improved approach to assessment. These advances suggest ways that the targets of assessment-what students know and how well they know it-as well as the methods used to make inferences about student learning can be made more valid and instructionally useful. Principles for designing and using these new kinds of assessments are presented, and examples are used to illustrate the principles. Implications for policy, practice, and research are also explored. With the promise of a productive research-based approach to assessment of student learning, Knowing What Students Know will be important to education administrators, assessment designers, teachers and teacher educators, and education advocates.
