Download or read book Reading Achievement and Motivation in Boys and Girls written by Pelusa Orellana García and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume links theoretical and instructional approaches on how reading is motivated and assessed, and examines the interrelationship between reading motivation and achievement among boys and girls in culturally and geographically different settings. Much of the research on children’s reading has focused on cognitive processes; however, reading is an activity that also requires interest and motivation. These attitudes are generally defined as readers’ affect toward reading and their consequence is that children with more positive attitudes are more motivated to read. Taking into account the variability that exists within the notion of gender and age, this volume aims to examine and scrutinize previous research on the topic, as well as test theories on how the different dimensions of reading motivation vary with gender, in relation to cultural issues, motivational constructs, such as engagement and classroom climate, the role of emotions, interests and attitudes towards reading, among others. The book will be of interest to researchers, educators, graduate students, and other professionals working in the area of literacy, reading motivation, reading achievement and gender differences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential text unpacks major transformations in the study of learning and human development and provides evidence for how science can inform innovation in the design of settings, policies, practice, and research to enhance the life path, opportunity and prosperity of every child. The ideas presented provide researchers and educators with a rationale for focusing on the specific pathways and developmental patterns that may lead a specific child, with a specific family, school, and community, to prosper in school and in life. Expanding key published articles and expert commentary, the book explores a profound evolution in thinking that integrates findings from psychology with biology through sociology, education, law, and history with an emphasis on institutionalized inequities and disparate outcomes and how to address them. It points toward possible solutions through an understanding of and addressing the dynamic relations between a child and the contexts within which he or she lives, offering all researchers of human development and education a new way to understand and promote healthy development and learning for diverse, specific youth regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or history of adversity, challenge, or trauma. The book brings together scholars and practitioners from the biological/medical sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, educational science, and fields of law and social and educational policy. It provides an invaluable and unique resource for understanding the bases and status of the new science, and presents a roadmap for progress that will frame progress for at least the next decade and perhaps beyond.

Book Synopsis Under which Conditions Does Reading Attitude Most Influence Reading Achievement? by : Nicholas Robert Hood
Download or read book Under which Conditions Does Reading Attitude Most Influence Reading Achievement? written by Nicholas Robert Hood and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading is an essential skill for academic and workforce success; however, recent data-driven accountability initiatives have led to schools' overreliance on reading achievement data for tracking and placement purposes. Such limited data do not give a comprehensive representation of the reader, and instructional decisions based on this narrow view can undermine students' motivation and weaken achievement. Attitude has been associated with achievement, but using reading attitude data could be more useful if the relationship between reading attitude and reading achievement were better understood. This study sought to expand on the reading attitude-reading achievement relationship by exploring specific teacher and student gender related conditions. The study culminated in investigation of the strength of the relationship between reading attitude and reading achievement for girls and boys with gender matched and unmatched teachers. The findings revealed that reading attitude only predicted reading achievement for students with gender matched teachers. The strongest link was for boys taught by male teachers.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This quantitative study examined the relationship between third- and fourth-grade Latina/o students’ reading attitudes, home literacy environment, and reading performance. The current study sought to add to the growing literature on the impact affective variables, such as reading attitudes and home literacy environment, have on culturally and linguistically diverse student groups. Participants of the study were recruited from an urban elementary school in Southern California. Findings indicate Latina/o student participants held overall negative attitudes toward reading and reading attitudes were found to be a better predictor of student reading performance across grade level than the measure of home literacy environment. Overall, measures of reading attitude and home literacy environment appear to be valuable tools in providing additional insight as to why a student may be struggling in their reading performance. Limitations and areas for future research are discussed.
