Book excerpt: The work carried out during the three year 1973-1977 period on the evaluation of positron annihilation as a non-destructive evaluation tool for micro-structure defects in some engineering materials, such as aluminum, titanium and their alloys and nickel base superalloys are reported. Positron annihilation has been found to be useful as a non-destructive evaluation tool for microstructure defects in the engineering materials tested. However, the method used, positron lifetime measurement, is well established but relatively time consuming. Futher studies on more engineering materials with various kinds of microstructure defects using a relatively fast method, positron annihilation gamma-ray Doppler Broadening is recommended. (Author).

Book excerpt: Positron annihilation has been used as a tool to study the effects of defects in crystalline solids in the realm of fundamental research for a long time. This paper reports an initial effort to evaluate the usefulness and the future development of positron annihilation as a tool in non-destructive evaluation, NDE. The metals studied included Al (99.99%), Al-1100, Al-2024, Ti-35A, Ti-6Al-4V, and nickel based superalloys, U-700 and M-200. The processes studied involve temperature change, work-hardening, stress-strain, creep and cyclic fatigue. The conclusion is that the process of positron annihilation is very sensitive to many kinds of defects in metals and that its potential as a tool of NDE is high. Certainly, more work is required to explore its full potential. A brief review describing the method of positron annihilation and its interaction with defects in metals is attached as an appendix.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The positron annihilation meanlife change caused by defects created by heat treatment or deformation for aluminum, titanium and their alloys and some nickel base superalloys are described. Positron annihilation lifetime measurement can be used as a method to determine certain defects in these metals. The sensitivity and limitations of the method of positron annihilation lifetime measurement are briefly discussed. The direction of possible future research is also described. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The positron annihilation technique can provide a sensitive measure of defect density in metals. In this program the technique has been used to monitor defects generated during plastic deformation by cold work or fatigue cycling. The primary goals have been: (1) to assess the degree of sensitivity of the technique; (2) to correlate positron annihilation readings with observed microstructural changes to better understand the physical basis for these readings; and (3) to determine correlations between positron annihilation measurements and number of fatigue cycles. Examination of fatigued samples by transmission electron microscopy indicates some correlation between dislocation density and positron annihilation lineshape parameter (determined by the Doppler broadening technique). However, annealing studies of deformed samples indicate that positron annihilation response in 316 stainless steel is sensitive primarily to excess vacancies generated during the deformation and is less sensitive to dislocation density. Data on deformed nickel show sensitivity to both vacancies and dislocations. In general, lineshape parameter values tend to achieve a constant level at approximately 10% of fatigue life.

Book excerpt: Positrons provide a non-destructive technique for probing the nature and size of defects in materials with atomic-scale sensitivity. This work will focus on the powerful capabilities of positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) to study the evolution of defects and defect structures. This invaluable tool can aid in developing and characterizing advanced materials, with diverse applications such as nuclear reactors, optoelectronics, nanotechnology, polymers, medical sciences, and more. The work presented in this thesis aims to gain a fundamental understanding of the formation and evolution of defect structures of various metals and alloys under irradiation by applying the techniques and concepts of PAS. Various other characterization techniques are also utilized simultaneously to interpret the positron data better and further enhance our understanding of these materials. Depth-resolved PAS was used to identify vacancy clusters and measure their density as a function of depth in three samples (HfMoTiVZr, HfNbTiZr, and HfNbTaTiZr bulk alloys), performed at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) in Dresden, Germany. The samples were studied before and after irradiation from 10 MeV Si ions. The behavior of these alloys under irradiation is discussed and quantified in this work. A single branch of samples from the multi-principal element alloy (MPEA) HfNbTaTiZr (Nb, HfNb, HfNbZr, HfNbTiZr, HfNbTaTiZr) was synthesized into thin films on MgO substrate at the Center of Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), to study the role of chemical complexity in an alloy's response to irradiation. There are four sets of these MPEA-based thin film samples, where one will be kept as a reference, and one will be studied with in situ PAS (iPAS), and two sets will be studied with ex situ PAS. The synthesis of these MPEA-based thin films and the design of the PAS experiment for each set is described in this work, along with other characterization techniques used together with this work. This work was made possible through the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) under grant number DMR-2005064 and by the Fundamental Understanding of Transport Under Reactor Extremes (FUTURE), an Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the DOE, Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences.

Book excerpt: Positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) has made significant contributions to our knowledge regarding lattice defects in metals in two areas: (i) the determination of atomic defect properties, particularly those of monovacancies, and (ii) the monitoring and characterization of vacancy-like microstructure development during post-irradiation of post-quench annealing. The application of PAS to the study of defects in metals is selectively reviewed and critically assessed within the context of other available techniques for such investigations. Possibilities for using the positron as a localized probe of the structure of atomic defects are discussed. Finally, the present status and future potential of PAS as a tool for the study of defects in metals are considered relative to other available techniques. 92 references, 20 figures.

Book excerpt: Owing to the ability of the positron to annihilate from a variety of defect-trapped states, positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) has been applied increasingly to the characterization and study of defects in materials in recent years. In metals particularly, it has been demonstrated that PAS can yield defect-specific information which, by itself or in conjunction with more traditional experimental techniques, has already made a significant impact upon the determination of atomic-defect properties and the monitoring and characterization of vacancy-like microstructure development, as occurs during post-irradiation annealing. The applications of PAS are now actively expanding to the study of more complex defect-related phenomena in irradiated or deformed metals and alloys, phase transformations and structural disorder, surfaces and near-surface defect characterization. A number of these applications in materials science are reviewed and discussed with respect to profitable future directions.

Book excerpt: This paper provides an overview of progress made on the NDE of homogeneously contaminated Ti-6211 alloys. It discusses the future work that is needed to address the practical NDE problems which may arise in these alloys and their welds. Problem areas include inhomogeneity in the distribution of oxygen; the presence of their contaminants such as Co2, N2, H, etc.; critical flaw size relative to the grain size; and variations in the microstructure due to causes other than oxygen contamination.
