This book was released on 1991-12-23 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding vortex dynamics is the key to understanding much of fluid dynamics. For this reason, many researchers, using a great variety of different approaches--analytical, computational, and experimental--have studied the dynamics of vorticity. The AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar on Vortex Dynamics and Vortex Methods, held in June 1990 at the University of Washington in Seattle, brought together experts with a broad range of viewpoints and areas of specialization. This volume contains the proceedings from that seminar. The focus here is on the numerical computation of high Reynolds number incompressible flows. Also included is a smaller selection of important experimental results and analytic treatments. Many of the articles contain valuable introductory and survey material as well as open problems. Readers will appreciate this volume for its coverage of a wide variety of numerical, analytical, and experimental tools and for its treatment of interesting important discoveries made with these tools.
Book Synopsis Random Walk In Random And Non-random Environments (Third Edition) by : Pal Revesz
Download or read book Random Walk In Random And Non-random Environments (Third Edition) written by Pal Revesz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-03-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simplest mathematical model of the Brownian motion of physics is the simple, symmetric random walk. This book collects and compares current results — mostly strong theorems which describe the properties of a random walk. The modern problems of the limit theorems of probability theory are treated in the simple case of coin tossing. Taking advantage of this simplicity, the reader is familiarized with limit theorems (especially strong ones) without the burden of technical tools and difficulties. An easy way of considering the Wiener process is also given, through the study of the random walk.Since the first and second editions were published in 1990 and 2005, a number of new results have appeared in the literature. The first two editions contained many unsolved problems and conjectures which have since been settled; this third, revised and enlarged edition includes those new results. In this edition, a completely new part is included concerning Simple Random Walks on Graphs. Properties of random walks on several concrete graphs have been studied in the last decade. Some of the obtained results are also presented.
Download or read book Stopped Random Walks written by Allan Gut and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-03 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical probability theory provides information about random walks after a fixed number of steps. For applications, however, it is more natural to consider random walks evaluated after a random number of steps. Examples are sequential analysis, queuing theory, storage and inventory theory, insurance risk theory, reliability theory, and the theory of contours. Stopped Random Walks: Limit Theorems and Applications shows how this theory can be used to prove limit theorems for renewal counting processes, first passage time processes, and certain two-dimenstional random walks, and to how these results are useful in various applications. This second edition offers updated content and an outlook on further results, extensions and generalizations. A new chapter examines nonlinear renewal processes in order to present the analagous theory for perturbed random walks, modeled as a random walk plus "noise."

Book Synopsis Dynamical Systems by : Ludwig Arnold
Download or read book Dynamical Systems written by Ludwig Arnold and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lecture notes written by the four principal speakers at the C.I.M.E. session on Dynamical Systems held at Montecatini, Italy in June 1994. The goal of the session was to illustrate how methods of dynamical systems can be applied to the study of ordinary and partial differential equations. Topics in random differential equations, singular perturbations, the Conley index theory, and non-linear PDEs were discussed. Readers interested in asymptotic behavior of solutions of ODEs and PDEs and familiar with basic notions of dynamical systems will wish to consult this text.

Book Synopsis Intersections of Random Walks by : Gregory F. Lawler
Download or read book Intersections of Random Walks written by Gregory F. Lawler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A central study in Probability Theory is the behavior of fluctuation phenomena of partial sums of different types of random variable. One of the most useful concepts for this purpose is that of the random walk which has applications in many areas, particularly in statistical physics and statistical chemistry. Originally published in 1991, Intersections of Random Walks focuses on and explores a number of problems dealing primarily with the nonintersection of random walks and the self-avoiding walk. Many of these problems arise in studying statistical physics and other critical phenomena. Topics include: discrete harmonic measure, including an introduction to diffusion limited aggregation (DLA); the probability that independent random walks do not intersect; and properties of walks without self-intersections. The present softcover reprint includes corrections and addenda from the 1996 printing, and makes this classic monograph available to a wider audience. With a self-contained introduction to the properties of simple random walks, and an emphasis on rigorous results, the book will be useful to researchers in probability and statistical physics and to graduate students interested in basic properties of random walks.

Book Synopsis Journal of Fourier Analysis and Applications Special Issue by : John J. Benedetto
Download or read book Journal of Fourier Analysis and Applications Special Issue written by John J. Benedetto and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journal of Fourier Analysis and Applications is a journal of the mathematical sciences devoted to Fourier analysis and its applications. The subject of Fourier analysis has had a major impact on the development of mathematics, on the understanding of many engineering and scientific phenomena, and on the solution of some of the most important problems in mathematics and the sciences. At the end of June 1993, a large Conference in Harmonic Analysis was held at the University of Paris-Sud at Orsay to celebrate the prominent role played by Jean-Pierre Kahane and his numerous achievements in this field. The large variety of topics discussed in this meeting, ranging from classical Harmonic Analysis to Probability Theory, reflects the intense mathematical curiosity and the broad mathematical interest of Jean-Pierre Kahane. Indeed, all of them are connected to his work. The mornings were devoted to plenary addresses while up to four parallel sessions took place in the afternoons. Altogether, there were about eighty speakers. This wide range of subjects appears in these proceedings which include thirty six articles.
