Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pressure drop for two-phase liquid-liquid flow is theoretically predicted for each flow regime. Empirical correlations, which are applicable in all flow regimes, are also presented for holdup as well as pressure drop. The experimental study covered bubble and drop flow regimes. The discontinuous phase was injected by nozzle into the vertical, 0.745 inch ID, 40 foot test section. The drop sizes were varied by inserting wire screens downstream of the nozzle and also by varying the nozzle size between .1875 inches and .375 inches OD. Photographs of the dispersions were taken in order to determine average drop diameter. The slip velocity between phases was determined by holding the dispersion in the test section after a run and then draining the sample and measuring the in situ concentration. The average fluid velocity ranged from 5 to 15 feet/second and injection concentrations were as high as 35% by volume. The dispersed phase fluids had Redacted for Privacy viscosities of 1, 9 and 200 centipoise. The pressure drop at a given concentration and size distribution was found to vary inversely with the average drop diameter; also a polydisperse (widely spread distribution) dispersion had a lower pressure drop than the monodisperse one with the same average drop size. An inverse relationship exists between the pressure drop and relative slip velocity. This effect appears to increase directly with the discontinuous phase concentration. The theoretically derived equations predict the pressure drop of bubble flow within a 16% relative standard deviation. Published data were used in evaluating the proposed equations in other regimes. Annular flow pressure drops were predicted within 8. 5% standard deviation and stratified flow within 13%. The empirical correlations for holdup and pressure drop had a standard deviation of approximately 25% when used with data from all flow regimes.

Book excerpt: This book provides design engineers using gas-liquid two-phase flow in different industrial applications the necessary fundamental understanding of the two-phase flow variables. Two-phase flow literature reports a plethora of correlations for determination of flow patterns, void fraction, two- phase pressure drop and non-boiling heat transfer correlations. However, the validity of a majority of these correlations is restricted over a narrow range of two -phase flow conditions. Consequently, it is quite a challenging task for the end user to select an appropriate correlation/model for the type of two-phase flow under consideration. Selection of a correct correlation also requires some fundamental understanding of the two-phase flow physics and the underlying principles/assumptions/limitations associated with these correlations. Thus, it is of significant interest for a design engineer to have knowledge of the flow patterns and their transitions and their influence on two-phase flow variables. To address some of these issues and facilitate selection of appropriate two-phase flow models, this volume presents a succinct review of the flow patterns, void fraction, pressure drop and non-boiling heat transfer phenomenon and recommend some of the well scrutinized modeling techniques.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is to provide better understanding of horizontal two-phase flow regime transitions through a flow visualization analysis and to provide a comprehensive two-phase flow frictional pressure loss analysis. The flow visualization study was performed using the large diameter horizontal test facility at the Advanced Multi-Phase Flow Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University. Several flow conditions were analyzed ranging from superficial velocities of 0.1 to 9.45 m/s for the gas phase and 0.1 to 5.5 m/s for the liquid phase. These flow conditions contained multiple runs in each two-phase flow regime: bubbly, plug, slug, stratified, and stratified wavy. The annular flow regime could not be obtained due to limitations of the test facility. A horizontal two-phase flow regime map was generated from the results and compared to previous AMFL work using a small diameter facility in order to assess the effect of pipe size on flow regime transitional boundaries. The comprehensive frictional pressure loss analysis was performed by acquiring frictional pressure loss data from multiple sources including several experiments performed by the AMFL. Horizontal, vertical upward, and vertical downward two-phase flow orientations were analyzed separately due to the varying effects of gravity and buoyancy force on the flow. Several two-phase frictional pressure loss predictive models are analyzed for their accuracy at predicting the measured frictional pressure loss. These models include the Lockhart and Martinelli model that was modified by Chisholm and the - model. The predictive models used in the TRACE and RELAP nuclear reactor analysis codes are compared to the experimental data.

In focusses on nonlinear aspects of multiphase flow networks as well as visualization experiments. The first chapter presents nonlinear aspects or deterministic chaos issues in the systems of multi-phase reactors. The second chapter reviews two-phase flow dynamics in combination with complex network theory. The third chapter discusses evaporation mechanism in the wick of copper heat pipes. The last chapter investigates numerically the flow dynamics and heat and mass transfer in the laminar and turbulent boundary layer on the flat vertical plate.

Book excerpt: Annular Two-Phase Flow presents the wide range of industrial applications of annular two-phase flow regimes. This book discusses the fluid dynamics and heat transfer aspects of the flow pattern. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the classification of the various types of interface distribution observed in practice. This text then examines the various regimes of two-phase flow with emphasis on the regions of occurrence of the annular flow regime. Other chapters consider the single momentum and energy balances, which illustrate the differences and analogies between single- and two-phase flows. This book discusses as well the simple modes for annular flow with consideration to the calculation of the profile of shear stress in the liquid film. The final chapter deals with the techniques that are developed for the measurement of flow pattern, entrainment, and film thickness. This book is a valuable resource for chemical engineers.

Book excerpt: The book provides design engineers an elemental understanding of the variables that influence pressure drop and heat transfer in plain and micro-fin tubes to thermal systems using liquid single-phase flow in different industrial applications. It also provides design engineers using gas-liquid, two-phase flow in different industrial applications the necessary fundamentals of the two-phase flow variables. The author and his colleagues were the first to determine experimentally the very important relationship between inlet geometry and transition. On the basis of their results, they developed practical and easy to use correlations for the isothermal and non-isothermal friction factor (pressure drop) and heat transfer coefficient (Nusselt number) in the transition region as well as the laminar and turbulent flow regions for different inlet configurations and fin geometry. This work presented herein provides the thermal systems design engineer the necessary design tools. The author further presents a succinct review of the flow patterns, void fraction, pressure drop and non-boiling heat transfer phenomenon and recommends some of the well scrutinized modeling techniques.
