Book excerpt: This study presents a comparison of two instructional approaches, 6 + 1 Traits Writing and Interactive Editing, in a seventh grade social science class over a two week period. The comparison was conducted in order to measure students' achievement in reading comprehension and quality of writing. Participating students in this study were selected using a table of random numbers and assigned to either the 6 +1 Traits Writing group or the Interactive Editing group. The study used a pretest to establish baseline achievement scores using a sample reading passage and comprehension questions from the district adopted curriculum. Students were also asked to write a summary and scored using the California Standardized Test (CST) released writing rubric. Instruction was given to group A using the 6 + 1 Traits Writing approach while group B received instruction using the Interactive Editing approach. A posttest was subsequently administered at the end of each instructional treatment using the same reading passage, comprehension questions, and writing assignment. Two independent writing judges scored students' writing using the CST rubric. Results indicated improvement in students' reading comprehension and writing for both treatment groups. However, the Interactive Editing group showed greater achievement in reading comprehension and quality of writing compared to the 6 +1 Traits Writing group.

Book excerpt: This action research study was conducted with 7th grade life science students at a public middle school in central Florida. The author used Reciprocal Teaching (RT) as described by Annemarie Palincsar and Anne Brown (1984) to examine changes in student comprehension when reading their life science textbook and changes in how the students used the predicting, questioning, and summarizing strategies. The RT strategies ask students to employ 4 strategies: predict what they will read, generate questions about what was read, clarify any ideas that were not understood in the reading, and summarize the main idea of the reading. Students were given a pre and post reading comprehension test, they completed reading response worksheets to record their predictions, questions, clarifications, and summaries. Students were explicitly taught the 4 strategies prior to using them and the strategies were reinforced through teacher modeling (using think aloud teaching to show students how to use the strategies) and expert scaffolding (giving students the support needed while using the strategies). The teacher-researcher also examined if the students showed change in their level of proficiency when using the strategies after they had been taught them. Analysis of data revealed that student comprehension did increase after being taught the four reading strategies. Data also showed that students became increasingly more proficient when using the strategies as the study progressed. Data analysis also uncovered the unexpected pattern of increased student participation during whole-class and reading group discussions. Further research is needed to examine the effects of teaching highly proficient students specific reading strategies and to see how the explicit instruction of reading strategies affects student participation and achievement during inquiry-based laboratory investigations.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of animation technique on academic achievement of students in the "Human and Environment" unit lectured as part of the Science and Technology course of the seventh grade in primary education. The sample of the study consists of 58 students attending to the 7th grade of Erzurum MEB Yildizkent IMKB primary school under two different classes during the 2011-2012 academic year. While the lectures in the class designated as the animation group were given with animation technique, in the class designated as the control group Powerpoint presentations was utilized along with the traditional teaching methods. According to the findings, it was determined that animation technique is more effective than traditional teaching methods in terms of enhancing students' achievement. It was also determined in the study that, the Powerpoint presentations used together with the traditional teaching methods provided to the control group significantly help the students to increase their academic achievement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if method of instruction, standards based or traditional, had an impact on student mathematics achievement. More specifically, this study sought to determine if students taught using the JBHM Achievement Connections® standards-based method of instruction would show higher academic gain than students taught using a traditional method of instruction through the use of Mathematics: Applications and Connections, Course 2® in seventh-grade. The research design was a quasi-experimental design, with 65 students participating. Group A received a traditional method of instruction through the use of Mathematics: Applications and Connections, Course 2 and Group B received a standards-based method of instruction through the use of JBHM Achievement Connections. The test instrument administered for the pretest and posttest was the PLATO eduTest®. An analysis of the pretest and posttest scores was conducted. T-tests were run to examine the differences between pretest and posttest scores and gender, based on the method of instruction. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was computed to examine differences in performance based on class period representation. A paired t-test was computed to examine differences between the pretest and posttest scores after students were exposed to a method of instruction. After the data was collected and analyzed, the findings showed that there were no statistical differences in student achievement between students taught using JBHM Achievement Connections standards-based method of instruction (Group A) and those students taught using Mathematics: Applications and Connections, Course 2 traditional method of instruction (Group B) as measured by the PLATO eduTest scores. Students taught using the JBHM Achievement Connections standards-based method of instruction and the Mathematics: Applications and Connections, Course 2 traditional method of instruction both showed increased mathematics outcomes. However, the students taught using JBHM Achievement Connections standards-based method of instruction had a higher mean score and a greater degree of gain between pretest and posttest scores than the students taught using the Mathematics: Applications and Connections, Course 2 traditional method of instruction.
