Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Transformer Magnetic Circuit The alternating current transformer has opened up and made possible the development of a branch of electrical industry which a few years ago would have seemed impossible. Perhaps the m st striking illustrations of electrical development along the line referred to above are: the generation of electric power at Niagara, and its subsequent economical transmission to Buffalo, and the performance of the Fresno plant in California. In this latter, power is developed by a water fall and transmitted to Fresno, a distance of thirty five miles. Step up transformers are used at the generating end. The line tension in both cases is about eleven thousand volts. Step down transformers are used at the distributing end. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magnetic Circuit This book, together with the companion book entitled The Electric Circuit, is intended to give a student in electrical engineering the theoretical elements necessary for the correct understanding of the performance of dynamo-electric machinery, transformers, transmission lines, etc. The book also contains the essential numerical relations used in the predetermination of the performance and in the design of electrical machinery and apparatus. The whole treatment is based upon a very few funda mental facts and assumptions. The student must be taught to treat every electric machine as a particular combination of electric and magnetic circuits, and to base its performance upon the fundamental electromagnetic relations rather than upon a sepa rate theory established for each kind of machinery, as is some times done. The book is not intended for a beginner, bit for a student who has had an elementary descriptive course in electrical engi neering and some simple laboratory experiments. The treat ment is somewhat different from that given in most other books dealing with magnetic phenomena. It is based directly upon the circuital relation, or interlinkage, between an electric current and the magnetic flux produced by it. This relation, and the law of induced electromotive force, are taken to be the fundamental phenomena of electro - magnetism. No use what ever is made of the usual artificial concepts of unit pole, magnetic charge, magnetic shell, etc. These concepts of mathematical physics, together with the law of inverse squares, embody the theory of action at a distance, and are both superfluous and misleading from the modern point of view of a continuous action in the medium itself. The magnetic circuit of the transformer, which because of its shape might be called either a core or shell type, is made of a new grade of silicon steel having such physical qualities that the core loss is small. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric and Magnetic Circuits In the preparation of this work the author has received much assistance from the classical works and lectures of prominent electrical engineers and the technical press, and desires to acknow ledge his indebtedness to these authorities for the many ideas which have enabled him to prepare the following chapters. He has also to express his thanks to His Majesty's Stationery Office for permission to use the table of logarithms and anti-logarithms given in the appendix. As it is almost impossible in the first edition of a book of this nature to detect every slip which may occur during its preparation the author requests his readers who may detect any error or ambiguity to kindly notify him of the same so as to make the book as reliable as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alternate Current Transformer, Vol. 1 Copenhagen famous as the birthplace of the discovery that an electric current passing through a metallic wire magnetises it circularly and creates round it a magnetic field, the direction of the lines of magnetic force being closed curves surrounding the axis of the wire. Faraday placed these two phenomena side by side before his mental vision, and he asked himself whether it was possible that the magnetic field of force gene rated round a current-carrying conductor could develop in an adjacent circuit an induced current just as the charged body calls forth an induced electrostatic charge on the neighbouring conductors. Some notions on this subject of electric current induction had before 1831 occupied his mind at intervals, but these early experiments did not lead to any satisfactory results. In 1825, in the month of November, Faraday stretched alongside of a wire connected with a galvanometer another through which an electric current was flowing, but both then and on December 2, 1825, and on April 22, 1828, he had to record of his experiment that it gave no result. A very little step in experimental research often separates failure from success. A reversal of operations, a change of some dimension, an alteration of some proportion, is often all that is needed to step from the region of failure into the field of discovery and achievement. In this case it may have been the apparently trivial one of starting the electric current in one wire before completing the circuit of the galvanometer. This was published in October, 1836. W. Sturgeon did not appear at this time to have been acquainted with Faraday's Ninth series of Electrical Researches; but after repeating mostof Henry's experiments, and adding some of his own, he arrived at the conclusion that the action of the spiral conductor in creating a shock was due to the collapse of the magnetic lines of force. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Limitations of the Series Transformer in Transient Phenomena: Thesis The following work is the outgrowth of a series of tests and calculations, made on the short circuit currents of alternators. A number of oscillograph records were taken of the short circuit current and the instantaneous values compared with those calculated from the constants of the alternator. The agreement was close in tests made in the laboratory, where the oscillograph was direct connected to the system; but very considerable discrepancies were found in some tests made outside of the laboratory, where the oscillograph was connected in the secondary circuit of a series transformer. Since the theory of the short circumzcurrents of alternators would not explain the peouliaraties in the latter curves a study of the action' of series transformers on unsymetrical or transient currents, was undertaken in an attempt to explain the phenomena. The results of this investigation shows that the series transformer(especially with iron core) is unreliable for recording transient or unsymetrical currents. While these is really only one type of current transformer in practical use, which type has an iron magnetic circuit it is of interest.
