Book excerpt: The increased number of students with disabilities in higher education promotes the need for specified career services for this population. Individuals with disabilities have historically struggled in employment settings, facing unemployment, underemployment, and wage disparities. Employees with disabilities are faced with the choice of whether or not to disclose their status to employers. A survey was designed to assess the relationship between the act of disclosing and other individual differences, such as type of disability, age at disability onset, use of informal compensatory strategies, use of formal accommodations, and work satisfaction. Disclosing disability status was found to have a significant relationship to type of disability and negative experiences in employment setting. Limitations of the investigation and implications for counselors are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increase of students with disabilities attending post-secondary education, it is important to have an understanding of how satisfied a student with a disability is with college. At present, the research on college satisfaction focuses on specific variables and how the specific variables moderate or mediate college satisfaction; however, there is limited research in the area of college satisfaction and students with disabilities. To address the current gap in research, the purpose of the current study was to address if there was a difference in overall satisfaction in students with a disability compared to students without a disability. Further, analysis of group differences in relation to domain scores was conducted, and how variables such as entrance status, gender, ethnicity, ACT scores, and grade point average mediate college satisfaction for students with disabilities. Additionally, it was important to examine the relationship between disability status and overall satisfaction, as well as examine the relationship of the 4 domains (e.g. Instruction and Life Skills, Quality of Student Services, and Quality of Undergraduate Experience) and overall satisfaction. Survey data were collected from 2009-2014 Undergraduate Survey from the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at a university in the southeastern United States. The results indicated a statistically significant difference between students with disabilities and students without disabilities in regards to perceptions of services provided, and undergraduate experience. Specifically, individual with disabilities are more satisfied in the area of services provided compared to students without disabilities, while students without disabilities are more satisfied with their undergraduate experience compared to students with disabilities. Further, numerous relationships were found between variables such as gender, ethnicity, entrance status, academic proficiency, and overall satisfaction. Lastly, instructional and life skills, quality of student services, quality of academic advising, and quality of undergraduate experience scores load onto the latent variable of overall satisfaction as hypothesized.

Book excerpt: American higher education is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse and researchers have suggested that more attention should be given to better understanding the career development of college students of color. Although there is substantial research on career development and the career decision-making process, studies have overwhelmingly primarily used data collected from White participants. Thus, little research has been done on the career development of people of color and specifically, college students of color. The primary focus of this study was to explore relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and racial identity attitudes of college students of color. In addition, the study explored relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and various demographic and life experience variables.^A sample of 164 college students of color attending five institutions of higher education in the Western New York area was used for this study. A survey packet consisting of four separate self-report instruments was completed by each participant. This study employed a multiple correlation and regression survey research design which was used to examine relationships between variables. This study generated a number of important findings. First, strong relationships where found between career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes for this sample. Second, career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes were related both positively and negatively, depending upon participants' current racial identity status, to participants' racial identity attitudes.^Third, participants' age, year in college, academic major, mother's educational level, and family income were predictors of their confidence in their ability to make a career choice that would meet their preferred lifestyle. Lastly, none of the remaining demographic variables were related to either career development construct. This study also explored the implications of the findings on career counseling with students of color, student affairs and academic advising practice, and higher education policy. Overall, this study provides new and relevant information regarding the career and racial identity development of college students of color, a very limited body of scholarly literature.

Book excerpt: The current study investigated the dynamic interplay of career decision ambiguity tolerance and career indecision over three assessment times in a sample of college students (n=583). While the previous research has repeatedly shown an association of career decision ambiguity tolerance with career indecision, the direction of this association has not been adequately assessed with longitudinal investigation. It was hypothesized in this study that there is a reciprocal pattern of career decision ambiguity tolerance leading to subsequent career indecision and career indecision leading to subsequent career decision ambiguity tolerance. Using a cross-lagged panel design, this study found support for the reciprocal pattern that aversion with ambiguity led to increased negative experience, choice anxiety, and lack of readiness in career decision making, while negative experience, choice anxiety, and lack of readiness led to increased aversion with ambiguity as well. Additionally, this study revealed that choice anxiety and readiness for career decision making led to increased interests in new information. The key findings were discussed with respect to the theoretical and clinical implications for career counseling along with limitations and suggestions for future research.

Book excerpt: Second, the results of the study indicated that students without a disability had higher levels of career maturity and self-advocacy than students with a disability; however, the self-efficacy scores were similar for students with and without a disability. Third, the results of the study focusing specifically on students with disabilities indicated that the career maturity of students who had a high level of self-advocacy was higher than for the students who had a low level of self-advocacy. However, there was no difference in levels of self-advocacy and career decision self-efficacy of college students with disabilities. Fourth, the results of this study focusing specifically on students with disabilities indicated that self-advocacy and career decision self-efficacy were the only variables that positively affected career maturity. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.
