Book excerpt: Agricultural extension learning is understood by scholars as a key adult education learning method used to educate and improve small-scale farmers' practices. This project aims to understand the impact that extension learning programs have on Jamaican small-scale farmers. This study was conducted in the rural region of Yankee District of St. Ann, Jamaica. A total of eight farmers were interviewed about their experiences of extension learning in agriculture. The findings provide evidence that there are some factors that affect small-scale farmers' growth in Jamaica, for example, low literacy rates. While extension learning can be employed to address these issues, there are limited extension learning programs to improve the skills and learning of farmers in rural communities. This thesis reports three main findings. First, there is evidence that most small-scale farmers learn to farm informally and experientially, and yet, this informal learning is not considered within the realm of extension learning programs. Second, farmers living in Yankee District have established informal cooperative groups among themselves. However, the findings reveal contradictions between practices and information sharing among members, resulting in unfortunate gaps in collective learning. Third, extension learning programs do not do enough to support women small-scale farmers, resulting in women leaving the community to support their families.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the following research was to explore Jamaican agriculture and rural development from the perspective of young, trained agriculturists, ages 18-34 and agricultural leaders, government leaders, and educators within the agricultural sector. The relevance of this research emerged from personal experience and current literature. Questionnaires were administered to young, trained agriculturalists (N=97) and several interviews were conducted with agricultural leaders and educators. The results of this research indicate that trained agriculturalists in this age bracket are not choosing to farm. In order to encourage youth to farm in the future, this paper finds that both questionnaire respondents and interviewees are aligned on several policy options. This paper recommends a concentrated and targeted government-led campaign to encourage the youth to be ready to take over Jamaican agriculture, a very important component of rural development, Jamaican culture and the economy.

Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of important contributions from noted scholars, articles derived from JAMPROs Jamaica Investment Forum 2015 written by members of the UWI Mona, WJC faculty as well as significant presentations from the policy makers who form the government of Jamaica. Importantly, this work focuses on examining the centrality of policies coupled with innovation in the transformation of Jamaica as the place to live, raise families and do business as espoused by the Vision 2030 national development plan. This joint work highlights the fundamental role that JAMPRO as the key agency for promoting Foreign Direct Investment in Jamaica plays in the thrust for economic growth and development. Importantly, we highlight some key contributors to the progress we have made in Jamaica through cases of home-grown multinationals such as the Grace Kennedy and Company Limited, LASCO, Kingston Wharves Limited, Sandals (ATL Group), while further noting areas that, with continued thrust and the right policies can fast-track our transformation. The key areas identified are Logistics, Agriculture, ICT/BPO (outsourcing) and Manufacturing. This book provides a valuable contribution to the literature on economic transformation, examining the history, current and new paradigms for the future in order to fast-track the economic transformation of Jamaica.

Book excerpt: Traditional farming systems have dominated the agricultural sector for the past few centuries. However, the past few years have proven that new, non-traditional farming methods, such as passive and non-passive solar drying, are essential in the wake of diminishing food production globally. Optimizing the Use of Farm Waste and Non-Farm Waste to Increase Productivity and Food Security: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a crucial reference source that provides vital research on the application of enhanced productivity, flexibility, competitiveness, and sustainability within an individual farming enterprise to promote food security. While highlighting topics such as biogas production, food distribution network, and aquaculture diversification, this publication explores utilizing farm waste in a circular approach to optimize material utilization in a farming system to realize a zero-waste scenario and the methods individual farms can practice to operate sufficiently to become successful and contribute to the attainment of national food security. This book is ideally designed for policymakers, farmers, researchers, agriculture engineers, environmental engineers, and development specialists seeking current research on non-farm waste contributions as sources of raw materials.
