Elicited imitation was used to examine the effects of adult-provided linguistic support and child language comprehension on encoding and delayed generalization abilities in 20-month-old children. Children were provided with varying levels of linguistic support during exposure to novel event sequences. After a delay, children had the opportunity to generalize the previously learned information using props that were perceptually distinct but functionally identical to those seen at the first session. Parents reported on children's comprehension of language. Children with higher comprehension scores appeared to be differentially sensitive to the language used at encoding and test. As such, these children showed greater performance for sequences tested in more supportive linguistic conditions, relative to when less supportive language was provided. As children develop abilities to comprehend and utilize the language in their environments, they become better able to extract useful information and enrich their learning about the world in which they live.
