Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.
Book Synopsis Observations on the Near Wake of a Yawed Circular Cylinder by : L. Lourenco
Download or read book Observations on the Near Wake of a Yawed Circular Cylinder written by L. Lourenco and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsteady characteristics of the near wake of a yawed circular cylinder were studied experimentally in a low speed wind tunnel and in a water towing tank facility using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. Four different yaw angles (0, 30, 45 and 60 deg) were tested with Reynolds numbers ranging from 8,000 to 60,000. The detailed wake characteristics are described in terms of instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields obtained at a Reynolds Number of 3,900. Immediately behind the model, large scale vortical structures emerge as a result of shear layer instabilities. The amalgamation of several of these structures leads to the formation of the wake vortices. The eventual shedding of the vortices is a result of the strong interaction between two shear layers separated from the cylinder. The vortex shedding Strouhal number variation with the yaw angle does not follow the Independence Principle for yaw angles beyond 30 deg. Using momentum balance concept, the unsteady forces on the model are determined and are found to agree with established results. (Author).

Download or read book Particle Image Velocimetry written by Ronald J. Adrian and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle image velocimetry, or PIV, refers to a class of methods used in experimental fluid mechanics to determine instantaneous fields of the vector velocity by measuring the displacements of numerous fine particles that accurately follow the motion of the fluid. Although the concept of measuring particle displacements is simple in essence, the factors that need to be addressed to design and implement PIV systems that achieve reliable, accurate, and fast measurements and to interpret the results are surprisingly numerous. The aim of this book is to analyze and explain them comprehensively.

Book Synopsis Spanwise Wake Structures of a Circular Cylinder and Two Circular Cylinders in Tandem by : J. Wu
Download or read book Spanwise Wake Structures of a Circular Cylinder and Two Circular Cylinders in Tandem written by J. Wu and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure of wakes downstream of cylinders is of major importance in the generation of flow-induced sound and vibration and also influences the convective heat transfer process. In particular, it is now thought that the formation of spanwise structures plays an important role. A better understanding of their development is required, and this could lead to ways of reducing both noise and vibration and to an improvement in heat and momentum transfer. Data are presented from tests carried out in a closed-circuit wind tunnel; also presented are data and flow visualizations from tests in a closed-circuit water tunnel. Hot-wire anemometer probes and pressure probes were used to measure velocity and pressure fluctuations at a number of spanwise locations in the wakes. From these measurements the spanwise coherence was calculated. The spanwise coherence increased as the distance between the cylinders in tandem was decreased; when this distance was less than three diameters, spanwise coherence at all spanwise separations was higher than for a single cylinder. Flow visualizations show the complex nature of the flow in the spanwise direction, particularly the existence of streamwise vortices. These appear to be responsible for the sharp reduction in spanwise coherence at large separations between the two cylinders in tandem. The work described is from a preliminary study with the object of developing a better understanding of near-wake flows prior to undertaking a comprehensive three-dimensional flow-field investigation.
Book Synopsis An Experimental Investigation of the Near Wake of a Circular Cylinder by : Ronald Eugene Walterick
Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Near Wake of a Circular Cylinder written by Ronald Eugene Walterick and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The near field region of the turbulent wake behind a rotating and nonrotating two dimensional circular cylinder is documented. U component mean velocities, turbulent intensities and velocity autocorrelation functions are measured at various downstream locations. From the autocorrelation functions, Taylor time microscales, longitudinal integral time scales and energy dissipation rates are computed. The measurements are performed for the flow over a circular cylinder at omega = 0 RPM and omega is approximately 500 RPM. The free stream velocity and Reynolds number, based on cylinder diameter, are respectively 5.9 m/sec and approximately 50,000. The turbulent measurements are made with a laser velocimeter using a frequency shifting phase modulator and the photon correlation processing scheme. Naturally occurring contaminant is augmented with vaporized kerosene to increase the magnitude of scattered light. Results are presented for the effects of varying omega, frequency shifting, particle concentrations and detector optics pinhole size on the turbulent quantities. (Author).

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Turbulence and its Measurement by : P Bradshaw
Download or read book An Introduction to Turbulence and its Measurement written by P Bradshaw and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Turbulence and Its Measurement is an introductory text on turbulence and its measurement. It combines the physics of turbulence with measurement techniques and covers topics ranging from measurable quantities and their physical significance to the analysis of fluctuating signals, temperature and concentration measurements, and the hot-wire anemometer. Examples of turbulent flows are presented. This book is comprised of eight chapters and begins with an overview of the physics of turbulence, paying particular attention to Newton's second law of motion, the Newtonian viscous fluid, and equations of motion. After a chapter devoted to measurable quantities, the discussion turns to some examples of turbulent flows, including turbulence behind a grid of bars, Couette flow, atmospheric and oceanic turbulence, and heat and mass transfer. The next chapter describes measurement techniques using hot wires, films, and thermistors, as well as Doppler-shift anemometers; glow-discharge or corona-discharge anemometers; pulsed-wire anemometer; and steady-flow techniques for fluctuation measurement. This monograph is intended for post-graduate students of aeronautics and fluid mechanics, but should also be readily understandable to those with a good general background in engineering fluid dynamics.
Book Synopsis An Experimental Investigation of the Near Wake of a Circular Cylinder in the Subcritical Regime by : Richard Walter Wlezien
Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Near Wake of a Circular Cylinder in the Subcritical Regime written by Richard Walter Wlezien and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The near wake of a circular cylinder in crossflow is experimentally investigated for Reynolds number 7600. The purpose is to develop techniques for characterizing the formation region of the Karman vortex street in presence of transition to turbulence and to use these techniques to examine the quasi-periodic vortex shedding phenomenon. A thermal tracer is used to tag vortical fluid in one of the cylinder boundary layers and this scalar is subsequently detected in the wake. The instantaneous phase of the amplitude and frequency modulated poly-chromatic vortex shedding phenomenon is computed using a digital Hilbert transform technique. This method is a generalization of the monochromatic complex rotating vector to processes which are modulated. The computed phase is used to conditionally sample the wake temperature using a six-sensor resistance thermo-meter array, and the resulting data are processed using statistical methods. Results demonstrate that the near wake region contains diffuse vortical fluid and this fluid has a role in the shar layer instability. The statistics also show the formation and shedding of a mean Karman vortex, and lead to a possible explanation of the modulation process. (Author).
