Book excerpt: This report is based on the responses by 3,155 Ohio peace officers to a survey on the reports they file, the equipment they use, the tasks they perform, the sources they rely on, and the physical activities they undertake in doing their jobs are analyzed. Law enforcement in Ohio is dominated by white males in their twenties and early thirties. Further, patrol officers average 13.39 years of formal education, and 60 percent have completed at least some post high-school studies. About one-third of the respondents characterized their patrol areas as urban, another as suburban, and one-fourth as a combination of urban-suburban-rural. Less than one-tenth described their jurisdiction as rural. Several pieces of equipment are closely related with law enforcement patrol work: 95 percent reported using an automobile daily, and 88 percent reported carrying flashlights and handcuffs.

Download or read book Blue Mafia written by Tim Tolka and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blue Mafia shows that small towns have even more severe police misconduct than many major metro areas by recounting the causes and consequences of two federal investigations of local police misconduct. Steubenville was the second city in the U.S. to sign a consent decree with the Justice Department, but nobody really knows why. Little do local residents know, the county narcotics squad was committing crimes similar to the LAPD's Rampart Scandal and the county prosecutor was setting up, robbing, and framing innocent locals and drug dealers alike. Warren had the fourth oldest Justice Department investigation in the country until the Trump administration unilaterally lifted the consent decree in April 2017. However, similar to Baltimore, the Warren police had a pattern or practice of illegal strip searches and cavity searches, excessive force, and a failure to investigate and discipline misconduct by officers. Blue Mafia recounts the struggle of two small communities with troubled police departments, focusing on the consequences of systemic police misconduct for women and people of color. Blue Mafia gives the most detailed account to date of police reform by consent decree, which can serve as a blueprint for citizens interested in investigating police misconduct and promoting police reform.
