Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the historical and theological development of the Holy Spirit movement in Korea through six successive periods. These periods are characterized by repentance and revival (1900-1920), persecution and suffering under Japanese occupation (1920-1940), confusion and division (1940-1960), explosive revival in which the Pentecostal movement played a major role in the rapid growth of Korean churches (1960-1980), the movement's reaching out to all denominations (1980-2000), and the new context's demanding the Holy Spirit movement to open new horizons in its mission engagement (2000-). The volume also discusses the relationship between this movement and other religions such as shamanism, and looks forward to further engagement with issues of concern in the larger society.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to provide a historical framework of Korean Pentecostalism, especially its historical origins. Pentecostalism in Korea has been criticized as being heretical, superficial, and shamanistic, by liberal and conservative theologians. Boo-Woong Yoo surveys the historical theology of Korean Pentecostalism from an indigenous perspective, especially in its connection with shamanism and its social view through his book Korean Pentecostalism. He uses two standards to interpret Korean Pentecostalism: ‘Belief in the Holy Spirit’ and the ‘movement as a socio-historical structure.’ I disagree with Yoo’s definitions of Pentecostalism in analyzing Korean Pentecostalism. The theology of the baptism of the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues is an important tool for interpreting Pentecostalism, but it is not mentioned as a basic doctrine of Pentecostalism in his book. Classical Pentecostalism finds its roots in the American Pentecostal movement that originated in Topeka, Kansas, in 1901 through the efforts of Charles Parham and in Los Angeles through the work of William Seymour at the Azusa Mission in 1906. They formulated the fully-defined classical Pentecostal doctrine, glossolalia, as the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Using two doctrines of initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the second blessing of being baptized with the Holy Spirit after regeneration, I survey the history of classical Pentecostalism in Korea. I reject Yoo’s perspective that the first generation of the Korean Pentecostal movement was born during the 1907 Pyongyang Revival. The Korean classical Pentecostal Church started through the work of an American woman missionary, Mary C. Rumsey, in 1928: this was the first direct contact of the Korean Church with the Azusa Mission. Later, the Korean Pentecostal leaders who lived in Japan introduced Pentecostal theologies and practices into Korea during the 1930s and 1940s. In 1953, missionaries of the Assemblies of God played a decisive role in the growth of Korean Pentecostalism. The Pentecostal tradition in Korea not only shares the world-wide ideas and values of classical Pentecostalism but also has specific indigenous characteristics based on the cultural, religious, and political situations of Korea.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to emphasize the need for and importance of an intensive Bible study ministry in church and to suggest specific alternatives by studying the effect of church planting and revival through a Bible Academy in a Korean church. Church growth in South Korea has long since accompanied Bible study ministry. Sadly, Korean churches in the 21st century have been experiencing a slowdown and downturn in growth. Though there may be a variety of causes, the absence of a systematic and ongoing Bible study is one of them. This study is focused on providing a Bible study model that can be applied to church planting and growth in South Korea by using Bible study materials from other churches and using the results of the Bible Academy conducted for the last eight years at Jeju Together Church. In this study, the researcher will present an effective model of Bible study to Korean churches and convey to Korean pastors that Bible study through a Bible Academy can have a direct impact on church growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean Protestant church has made an astonishing growth in the relatively short period for over a hundred years of mission history. No doubt, worship has made a major contribution to this increase. To what extent and in what sense can the worship of the Korean Presbyterian church be called Reformed? To what extent was it deformed or reformed? What kind of continuity or discontinuity has the Korean Presbyterian worship with the 16th century Geneva worship and with the historical development of Reformed worship? What would all these developments mean in terms of Reformed ethos of worship? The author tried to answer these questions through a study on history of worship in the Presbyterian Church in Korea. The answer the author found is that the Korean Presbyterian becomes more Korean by becoming more Reformed and more Reformed by becoming more Korean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as Asia’s "evangelical superpower," South Korea today has some of the largest and most dynamic churches in the world and is second only to the United States in the number of missionaries it dispatches abroad. Understanding its evangelicalism is crucial to grasping the course of its modernization, the rise of nationalism and anticommunism, and the relationship between Christians and other religionists within the country. Born Again is the first book in a Western language to consider the introduction, development, and character of evangelicalism in Korea—from its humble beginnings at the end of the nineteenth century to claiming one out of every five South Koreans as an adherent at the end of the twentieth. In this thoughtful and thorough study, Timothy S. Lee argues that the phenomenal rise of this particular species of Christianity can be attributed to several factors. As a religion of salvation, evangelicalism appealed powerfully to multitudes of Koreans, arriving at a time when the country was engulfed in unprecedented crises that discredited established social structures and traditional attitudes. Evangelicalism attracted and empowered Koreans by offering them a more compelling worldview and a more meaningful basis for association. Another factor is evangelicalisms positive connection to Korean nationalism and South Korean anticommunism. It shared in the aspirations and hardships of Koreans during the Japanese occupation and was legitimated again during and after the Korean conflict as South Koreans experienced the trauma of the war. Equally important was evangelicals’ relentless proselytization efforts throughout the twentieth century. Lee explores the beliefs and practices that have become the hallmarks of Korean evangelicalism: kibok (this-worldly blessing), saebyok kido (daybreak prayer), and kumsik kido (fasting prayer). He concludes that Korean evangelicalism is distinguishable from other forms of evangelicalism by its intensely practical and devotional bent. He reveals how, after a long period of impressive expansion, including the mammoth campaigns of the 1970s and 1980s that drew millions to its revivals, the 1990s was a decade of ambiguity for the faith. On the one hand, it had become South Korea’s most influential religion, affecting politics, the economy, and civil society. On the other, it found itself beleaguered by a stalemate in growth, the shortcomings of its leaders, and conflicts with other religions. Evangelicalism had not only risen in South Korean society; it had also, for better or worse, become part of the establishment. Despite this significance, Korean evangelicalism has not received adequate treatment from scholars outside Korea. Born Again will therefore find an eager audience among English-speaking historians of modern Korea, scholars of comparative religion and world Christianity, and practitioners of the faith.

It shows the roots of Korean Pentecostalism in Korean culture and history, and discusses its relation to Minjung theology. Some of the American evangelistic campaigns in Korea are also discussed. Korea has its own Pentecostal churches but more important is the influence of the Pentecostal Movement on that country's rapidly-growing churches in general. The originality of Korean Pentecostalism and its difference from American/European Pentecostalism is clearly highlighted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century has witnessed periodic revivals comparable to the awakenings of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. And yet, many of the places and players of these reawakenings have been overlooked or neglected by the chroniclers of North American church history. "A Survey of 20th-Century Revival Movements in North America" attempts to set the record straight. It offers a concise and useful survey of the major currents of revival that have swept over this continent since the turn of the century. As the final decade of this century approaches it is appropriate that historian Richard Riss chart the course of twentieth-century revival on this continent and record the people, places, and events that have shaped the modern American church. Names like William J. Seymour or Maria B. Woodworth-Etter; places like Azusa Street or North Battleford, Saskatchewan; and events like the forest Home Briefing Conference or the Latter Rain Revival might not be as familiar as Billy Graham, Oral Roberts, or the Jesus movement, but each has played a significant role in keeping the streams of revival flowing. The impact of these often lesser-known figures and events is tremendous. For example, William J. Seymour was a key figure in early Pentecostalism, which has become one of the most rapidly growing segments of modern Christianity. Also, college awakenings at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, North Park College, and Wheaton College in late 1949 and early 1950 received nationwide press coverage and sparked college revivals throughout the country. A decade later, in 1960, Dennis Bennett's experience of the Holy Spirit in Van Nuys, California, wouldmark the beginning of a tremendous outpouring of the Spirit, and for many, came to represent the start of the charismatic renewal movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the 1907 Korean Revival Movement from a self psychological perspective. The examination of the psychological processes in the movement based on Heinz Kohut's self psychology can shed light on religious experiences as selfobject experiences by identifying the sense of defeatedness and helplessness that Korean people experienced under Japanese occupation as what Kohut calls self-fragmentation of the Korean group self and explaining its therapeutic functions which facilitate potential for the narcissistic nourishment of the fragmented group self leading to renewed self-esteem, transformation, and empowerment of the Korean people. Korean people in the early 1900s experienced abuses and oppression by corrupt officials and exploitation by Japanese government. Through religious experiences which emphasized the individual repentance, the experience of God through the spirit, emphasis on prayer, and eschatological faith, the Korean Revival Movement in 1907 enabled its followers to experience mirroring and idealizing selfobjects which function as a role of transforming the lower shape of narcissism into the higher one.

Book excerpt: In 1977 the Trust published this remarkable account of the first 60 years or so of the modern church in Korea (mainly North Korea). William Blair (1876- 1970), in his first term of missionary service, was at the centre of the great revival of 1907, and his account of this and the events leading up to it forms the first part of the book. Blair includes a thrilling description of how the gospel first came to Korea. The account is then taken up by his son-in-law, Bruce Hunt (1903- 92) born in Pyengyang, now the capital of North Korea who shows how the revival was followed by a baptism of suffering under the Japanese and Communists. During his forty-eight years of missionary service in Korea, Hunt personally knew many of the Korean Christian martyrs. This new edition of The Korean Pentecost has been completely re-typeset, and includes twelve additional illustrations.

Book excerpt: This paper aims to study the effects of the ranch church system to the growth and revival within a church by analyzing various cases of other churches organized as ‘ranch church’ among churches in Korea. The purpose of this paper is to propose methodology of a growth of the church which is necessary for Korean churches by describing and studying methods of relationships, nurture, services, mission works, training, etc. The Korean churches have gone through the growth and revival which are unparalleled in the world. However, there is a lack of the qualitative growth in proportion to sizes and numerical revival. It has been a long time since the churches lost its own missions in playing a role as light and salt of the world due to the lack of spiritual growth of Christians of churches. This study focuses on providing a righteous church model that might contribute to the quantitative and qualitative growth of Korean churches by analyzing and integrating various materials of churches of a ranch church and results of a ranch church system implemented for 5 years in Sungbok church that is operated as a ranch church.

It examines the eschatological implications of Korean religious thought, the eschatology of American missionaries, the horrific experience of Japanese occupation (1910-1945), and the enforcement of Shinto shrine worship in light of Korean Christians' tenacious hold on dispensational premillennialism. This book explains the place of premillennialism in the Christian life, and it deals with the cultural underpinnings of Christianity in Korean history by bringing to bear the complex social, political, and religious elements of Korean culture.
