Book Synopsis Genetic Diversity and Hypoglycemic Studies of Salvadora Species by : Sushila Saini
Download or read book Genetic Diversity and Hypoglycemic Studies of Salvadora Species written by Sushila Saini and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Salvadora belonging to family Salvadoraceae is a small group of evergreen trees or shrubs adaptable to alkaline or very saline soil. Two species found in India are Salvadora oleoides and S. persica. These species are widely used in indigenous system of medicine. Despite having so much utility there has been a major decline in the population of S. oleoides and S. persica. The area under this genus is diminishing very rapidly and causing major threat to forest ecosystem. The wide ranging medicinal, ecological, social and economic importance on the one hand and declining population on the other necessitates to estimate the range and quantum of existing natural variation which is essential for framing meaningful genetic improvement programme, aimed at sustainable utilization. Beside this not much work has been done for their utilization as antidiabetic plants. Hence an attempt has been made to assess the genetic diversity and to find out the possible role of Genus Salvadora as an antidiabetic agent.

Book Synopsis Amphibians and Reptiles of Texas by : James Ray Dixon
Download or read book Amphibians and Reptiles of Texas written by James Ray Dixon and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN THIS REVISED edition of Amphibians and Reptiles of Texas, James R. Dixon adds to and updates the extensive information given in the first edition. A new section on conservation issues highlights some of the problems facing the continued survival of amphibians and reptiles, particularly commercial collecting and habitat destruction. Taxonomic changes have been made to reflect the latest scientific information, and the extensive listing of the literature on Texas amphibians and reptiles has been updated through April, 1999. Going back to the writings of French botanist Jean Louis Berlandier, who encountered Texas herpetofauna during his travels from 1828 to 1834, this list covers more than 150 years of inquiry into the state's species and is also testimony to the distinguished careers of such herpetologists as Hobart M. Smith and, more recently, Chris McAllister. Another prominent feature of this book is the more than 150 distribution maps, which show by county the updated distribution records for all native Texas amphibians and reptiles, based on more than 13,000 county records and more than 110,000 individual localities. Professional and amateur herpetologists as well as environmentalists, wildlife specialists, campers, and hikers will find the dichotomous keys useful for identifying species at hand. This aid to identification is supported by a glossary, drawings and photographs, and complete scientific and common names.

Book Synopsis California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern by : Robert C. Thomson
Download or read book California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern written by Robert C. Thomson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important hotspots of herpetological biodiversity in the United States, California is home to many endemic amphibians and reptiles found nowhere else on earth. Many of these taxa have unique ecological and morphological specializations, and their management is an important conservation challenge. Increasing climate change impacts, human development, and extreme drought mean many of these species face an ever-greater risk of extinction. California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern provides an up-to-date synthesis of the current state of knowledge regarding the biology and conservation risks faced by 45 of California’s most sensitive amphibian and reptile species. With the goal of enhancing management based on the best available science, the authors developed a novel set of risk metrics to identify special concern species and the threats they face, including population declines, range size and restrictions, and ecological specializations and niche restrictions. In addition to detailed species accounts, this book provides a quantitative analysis of the conservation status and pressing management issues facing individual species and the state’s amphibian and reptile fauna as a whole. The volume focuses on identifying threats, concrete recommendations for management and recovery, and future research needs. The text is complemented by detailed distribution maps, color photos, and graphs. Written in nontechnical language, California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern will be a valuable resource to a broad range of users from resource managers, field biologists, and academic herpetologists to students and recreational naturalists. Published in association with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

This book sets the stage for further research of the reptiles and amphibians of this remarkable region."—Robert Hansen, Editor, Herpetological Review "Grismer is without question the foremost authority on the herpetofauna of the Baja Peninsula; no one else could have produced such a detailed, comprehensive treatment of the amphibians and reptiles of the area. The book stands as a monument to Lee's many years of dedicated work on the Baja herpetofauna and will be the standard reference on the subject for many years to come."—Julian C.
