Book excerpt: Pressure situations in sport can be a source of anxiety for athletes (Craft, Magyar, Becker, & Feltz, 2003). Research indicates that a brief mindfulness training can improve math performance under pressure (Brunye et al., 2013); however, no known studies have examined the effects of mindfulness practice on an athletic performance under pressure. Therefore, this experiment investigated the effects of a brief mindfulness training on basketball free-throw shooting under pressure. Participants were 32 college-aged (Mage = 21.29), male competitive basketball players. Participants shot 20 free-throws in a low-pressure phase, then were pair-matched by free-throws made and randomly assigned to mindfulness (n = 16) or control (n = 16) conditions. Pressure was induced before participants listened to a 15-minute mindfulness or history of basketball recording. Next, free-throws made and free-throw shot quality were recorded for 20 free-throws. A mixed ANOVA revealed that during the high-pressure phase, the experimental groups' free-throw shooting average (M = 70.6%) was not statistically significantly different from the control groups' (M = 61.6%). Results of an ANCOVA revealed that the mindfulness group's shot quality was higher than the control group's during the high-pressure phase and approached a statistically significant difference when controlling for trait mindfulness (F = 2.33, p = .051, Ƞp2 = .13). During the high-pressure phase, the mindfulness group reported statistically significantly lower levels of cognitive anxiety (t = 2.06, p = .048) and somatic anxiety (t = 2.67, p = .014) than the control group. Although the brief mindfulness intervention did not have a statistically significant effect on performance, the findings are discussed in terms of practical significance. The mindfulness group's significantly lower anxiety indicates that mindfulness training may improve athletes' subjective experience during pressure situations.

Book excerpt: The Science of Basketball is the only book to examine the scientific principles underpinning preparation and performance in basketball, applied to both individual and team contexts. Drawing on the very latest scientific evidence, and including contributions from leading international coaches and scientists involved in the sport, the book explores every aspect of physical and mental preparation and performance, including: strength and conditioning, and training strategies physiological aspects of performance nutrition and supplementation psychological preparation skill acquisition biomechanical aspects of performance performance analysis injury epidemiology, prevention and rehabilitation coach education Incorporating case studies at the end of each chapter to demonstrate how scientific principles can be applied to practice, the book bridges the gap between theory and applied practice in basketball better than any other. It is essential reading for any student, researcher, sport scientist, coach, physiotherapist or clinician with an interest in the game, and illuminative supplementary reading for students of sport science and sports coaching.

Book excerpt: Fifth and sixth grade boys (N = 38) participated in the free throw study to examine the effects of massed and distributed practice during a 10-session experimental program. Ss were randomly assigned to two groups: a massed practice group (n = 19), and a distributed practice group (n = 19). Each S in the massed practice group practiced 20 consecutive free throws during each session. Each S in the distributed practice group practiced 20 free throws, attempted two free throws then waited until every other subject in his sub-group had attempted two free throws before taking his next turn. An ANCOVA produced P> .05 between the massed practice free throw shooting method and the distributed practice free throw shooting method. Results of using the adjusted mean scores indicated that the massed practice group showed the greater increase in improvement over the distributed practice group.

Book excerpt: In Scorecasting, University of Chicago behavioral economist Tobias Moskowitz teams up with veteran Sports Illustrated writer L. Jon Wertheim to overturn some of the most cherished truisms of sports, and reveal the hidden forces that shape how basketball, baseball, football, and hockey games are played, won and lost. Drawing from Moskowitz's original research, as well as studies from fellow economists such as bestselling author Richard Thaler, the authors look at: the influence home-field advantage has on the outcomes of games in all sports and why it exists; the surprising truth about the universally accepted axiom that defense wins championships; the subtle biases that umpires exhibit in calling balls and strikes in key situations; the unintended consequences of referees' tendencies in every sport to "swallow the whistle," and more. Among the insights that Scorecasting reveals: • Why Tiger Woods is prone to the same mistake in high-pressure putting situations that you and I are • Why professional teams routinely overvalue draft picks • The myth of momentum or the "hot hand" in sports, and why so many fans, coaches, and broadcasters fervently subscribe to it • Why NFL coaches rarely go for a first down on fourth-down situations--even when their reluctance to do so reduces their chances of winning. In an engaging narrative that takes us from the putting greens of Augusta to the grid iron of a small parochial high school in Arkansas, Scorecasting will forever change how you view the game, whatever your favorite sport might be.

Book excerpt: Research has suggested that having a pre-shot routine is helpful for performance in golf putting, and more recently, under pressure conditions for Australian football players. The current study extends these findings to free throw shooting in basketball, under pressure. Participants were subjected to two sets of 15 basketball free throws; the shooters were videotaped during their second set of shots as a manipulation of pressure. Afterward, researchers reviewed the tape and rated how elaborate participants appeared to be on the pre-shot routine. Measurements of routine time and routine time standard deviation were also assessed. Results revealed a significant and positive relationship between performance and mean ratings of how elaborate a participant's routine was. This suggests that having an elaborate pre-shot routine does predict performance under pressure. Previous literature has suggested that consistency was important; based on current results, however, we cannot recommend that. In addition to standard practice, sport psychologists and coaches are advised to teach athletes an elaborate routine, to benefit performance under pressure.
