Book excerpt: Education is a process of acquiring knowledge, moral values, skills and beliefs. Education includes teaching, training, discussion and doing various research and finding new truth. Education began in prehistoric period as adults passed on their knowledge and skills to their next generation. When cultures started evolving, knowledge and skills were taught in formal setting. Formal education started to emerge. Plato founded the academy in Athens, which was the first institution for higher education. The city of Alexandria in Egypt was established in 330BCE and in China the great philosopher Confucius started spreading his educational thoughts across the neighborhood of Korea and Japan.

Book excerpt: Over the past several decades, the reformation of mathematics curriculum and instruction has been a topic of debate. The No Child Left Behind Act has created a new level of accountability for school districts to increase the mathematics achievement levels of all students. In order to address the need to increase the mathematics achievement levels, some schools have implemented alternative mathematics programs. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects that one alternative mathematics program had on a group of secondary students. This longitudinal quantitative study examined two graduating classes from one high school located in south central Pennsylvania. One hundred ninety-six students in the class of 2006 participated in a traditional mathematics program and two hundred thirty students in the class of 2007 participated in an alternative mathematics program. Eighth-grade and eleventh-grade Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) data was collected on each of the graduating classes to determine whether the alternative mathematics program had a positive effect on student achievement. High school mathematics course enrollment data was also collected on each of the graduating classes to determine if students in the alternative program complete higher level mathematics courses in comparison to the students participating in the traditional program. Results from the study indicated greater achievement growth in the group of students that participated in the alternative mathematics program. Students participating in the alternative mathematics program showed greater increase in both their scaled scores as well as their PSSA performance levels in comparison to students that participated in the traditional mathematics program. There was not a significant difference in course enrollment between the two groups of students.

Book excerpt: This study applies life course theory (Elder, 1998) to understand the effect of different mathematics course progressions throughout the high school transition period. The purpose of the study was two-fold: to investigate the effectiveness of two different high school's mathematics course progressions by examining mathematics achievement throughout the high school transition; and to relate students' experiences of their mathematics trajectory, formed by their mathematics course progression, to their transition to high school and throughout high school. Using mixed methods, achievement data from eighth to eleventh grade was evaluated from two Alabama high schools in the same school district. Independent samples t-tests, linear regression models, ANOVA, and ANCOVA were performed followed by interviews of three students from each school. Findings from this study indicate that there were significant differences in achievement at the two high schools at the beginning of the transition period and no significant differences in achievement at the end of the transition period. Significant predictors of achievement include prior achievement and the number of courses students took during the transition period. Furthermore, through student interviews factors that influenced student achievement were exposed. This study connects high school transition research with high school mathematics achievement research, and contributes to the lack of qualitative research of the high school transition.

Book excerpt: Public mathematics education is not at its best in the United States and technology is often seen as part of the solution to address this issue. With the existence of high-speed internet, mobile technologies, ever-improving computer programming and graphing, the concepts of learning management systems (LMSs) and online learning environments (OLEs), technology-based learning has elevated to a whole new level. The new generation of online learning enables multi-modal utilization, and, interactivity with instant feedback, among the other precious characteristics identified in this study. The studies that evaluated the effects of online learning often measured the immediate impacts on student achievement; there are very few studies that have investigated the longer-term effects in addition to the short term ones. In this study, the effects of the new generation Online Learning Activity Based (OLAB) curriculum on middle school students' achievement in mathematics at the statewide high-stakes testing system were examined. The results pointed out that the treatment group performed better than the control group in the short term (immediately after the intervention), medium term (one year after the intervention), and long term (two years after the intervention) and that the results were statistically significant in the short and long terms. Within the context of this study, the researcher also examined some of the factors affecting student achievement while using the OLE as a supplemental resource, namely, the time and frequency of usage, professional development of the facilitators, modes of instruction, and fidelity of implementation. While the researcher detected positive correlations between all of the variables and student achievement, he observed that school culture is indeed a major feature creating the difference attributed to the treatment group teachers. The researcher discovered that among the treatment group teachers, the ones who spent more time on professional development, used the OLE with greater fidelity and attained greater gains in student achievement and interestingly they came from the same schools. This verified the importance of school culture in teachers' attitudes toward making the most of the resources made available to them so as to achieve better results in terms of student success in high stakes tests.
