Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of mastery learning on sophomore level high school students enrolled in a regular level biology course. The study was conducted in April 1996 at Cary-Grove High School, part of Community High School District #155, Crystal Lake, Illinois. The students who participated generally ranked in the top 60th percentile of their class, and based upon this they were placed in this regular level course. The study assesses the effects of mastery learning in two different outcomes, student achievement and student affect. Student achievement was evaluated using a ninety-five question forced choice test that was written by the biology teaching staff at Cary-Grove as a part of the School Improvement Process requirements of the State of Illinois. The test was designed to align with both the goals of the state and the curriculum that has been implemented at Cary-Grove. Student affects was evaluated using a five question student survey that assessed students perception of the course, their attitude toward the subject that they were learning, how important they felt the subject was and how fairly they perceived their work as being evaluated. The results of this study indicated that the mastery learning approach did have a significant effect on the students who were being taught using the method. The test was divided into eleven different topics, and the students who were in the classes where the mastery approach was being used performed better in nine of the areas as opposed to the students who were in the classes where mastery learning had not been used. The results also indicated that mastery learning did appear to have a cumulative effect, with greater results being seen in the second semester topics as opposed to the first semester topics. Mastery learning also appeared to have a positive effect on student affect. The results of the survey found that the students who were taught using the mastery application reported more often than the students were not taught using mastery that they had control over their learning, that there were high expectations for their success, and that the subject they were learning was important."--Author's abstract.

Book excerpt: This study works to assess the degree to which the impact of implementation of Mastery Learning can be described through teacher perception, academic achievement, and student growth. Elementary school teachers in a suburb in North Carolina implemented the Mastery Learning framework. The school’s end-of-grade test scores were above state and district averages but did not meet expected academic growth as identified by the state. These results are an indicator that many of the students were proficient but were not growing at an acceptable rate. Beginning in the 2017 school year, teachers attended professional development training on the framework, processes, and best uses of Mastery Learning in a classroom. I created a survey, piloted a focus group, examined responses, and analyzed achievement data to determine the impact of the implementation of Mastery Learning at this site. The impact of Mastery Learning on student achievement and growth were examined, and teacher perceptions were studied. The results from this study led to conclusions that a need exists for students to master necessary skills, either before learning takes places or as a corrective teaching when a deficit is presented in learning, in order to show growth in student achievement scores. My recommendations were for the school to continue to pursue professional learning on Mastery Learning practices. I also recommend continuation of research on many of the Mastery Learning framework aspects in order to maintain high fidelity standards, increase participation from the teachers, and provide students more time to meet growth on achievement tests.

Book excerpt: Building Intelligent Interactive Tutors discusses educational systems that assess a student's knowledge and are adaptive to a student's learning needs. The impact of computers has not been generally felt in education due to lack of hardware, teacher training, and sophisticated software. and because current instructional software is neither truly responsive to student needs nor flexible enough to emulate teaching. Dr. Woolf taps into 20 years of research on intelligent tutors to bring designers and developers a broad range of issues and methods that produce the best intelligent learning environments possible, whether for classroom or life-long learning. The book describes multidisciplinary approaches to using computers for teaching, reports on research, development, and real-world experiences, and discusses intelligent tutors, web-based learning systems, adaptive learning systems, intelligent agents and intelligent multimedia. It is recommended for professionals, graduate students, and others in computer science and educational technology who are developing online tutoring systems to support e-learning, and who want to build intelligence into the system. - Combines both theory and practice to offer most in-depth and up-to-date treatment of intelligent tutoring systems available - Presents powerful drivers of virtual teaching systems, including cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and the Internet - Features algorithmic material that enables programmers and researchers to design building components and intelligent systems

Book excerpt: This unique and ground-breaking book is the result of 15 years research and synthesises over 800 meta-analyses on the influences on achievement in school-aged students. It builds a story about the power of teachers, feedback, and a model of learning and understanding. The research involves many millions of students and represents the largest ever evidence based research into what actually works in schools to improve learning. Areas covered include the influence of the student, home, school, curricula, teacher, and teaching strategies. A model of teaching and learning is developed based on the notion of visible teaching and visible learning. A major message is that what works best for students is similar to what works best for teachers – an attention to setting challenging learning intentions, being clear about what success means, and an attention to learning strategies for developing conceptual understanding about what teachers and students know and understand. Although the current evidence based fad has turned into a debate about test scores, this book is about using evidence to build and defend a model of teaching and learning. A major contribution is a fascinating benchmark/dashboard for comparing many innovations in teaching and schools.
