The purpose of this study was to provide insight on the perception of the work environment in light of downsizing in the states of California and Illinois Cooperative Extension. The primary role of Extension is to plan pertinent programs that are effective in meeting the educational needs of the community in agriculture, family and consumer studies, and youth development. This study focuses on how to maintain professional competencies with less staff. Data was provided by the Manson's Workplace Environment Analysis Inventory, and original instrument, to secure reactions of employees in a downsized environment, specifically on morale, survivor job security, and trust. The findings suggested that even though there were discrepancies between the employees' and management's perceptions of morale and survivors job security, they did share similar perceptions on trust in the workplace. The results of this study can be used in designing leadership training programs for community based organizations and others faced with downsizing.

Data was gathered through a literature review and a survey instrument. The survey was mailed out with a 47.5% response rate. The main conclusions of the study were: 1. Most large corporations in the Rocky Mountain Region have downsized within the past year or will do so in the coming year; 2. Almost all firms provide at least one form of assistance to departing employees; 3. Almost three quarters of the managers have taken on additional responsibility since downsizing; 4. Three fourths of the firms that have undergone downsizing have experienced no change in market share; 5. More than half have experienced a deterioration of employee morale; 6. The main reasons for the downsizing are: Cost savings, survival, and enhanced communication. The main recommendations were: 1. Firms who have downsized should conduct follow-up research with terminated employees to determine which forms of assistance were most helpful, and if they have found suitable employment; 2. Those firms who are considering downsizing in the future should communicate all aspects of the downsizing effort to employees, and develop programs which will improve employee morale for remaining employees; 3. Business educators should prepare students for the changing business culture of the 1990's and beyond; 4. Business educators should stress the importance of flexibility in the workplace.

These trends have the potential to create a sense of fear and/or anxiety of job loss among employees. Although substantial research on downsizing and layoff has been conducted, attention has been mainly directed to the victims and survivors of layoffs. Less information has been collected about how people in general cope with the fear caused by the threat of layoff through mass downsizing. Drawing upon Terror Management Theory (TMT) (Greenberg, Pyszczynski, & Solomon, 1986; Solomon, Greenberg, & Pyszczynski, 1991), I have developed a model describing the relationships between threat of future downsizing and the defense mechanisms that are associated with such threat. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how individuals cope with the threat of layoff through downsizing. In particular, this study empirically examines whether subjects who are threatened by job loss through downsizing will be more likely to favor two business ideologies: the ideology of employee self-reliance and the ideology of corporate change. The ideology of employee self-reliance is defined as the belief that employees should be responsible for their own career planning, including their training and obtaining of essential skills (McKinley, Mone & Barker, 1998) while the ideology of corporate change is defined as the belief that corporate change is constant, healthy, and the normal condition for a corporation (Doppler & Lauterburg, 2001). In addition to examining whether the threat of future downsizing affects favorableness toward business ideologies, the study examines whether the threat of future downsizing will lead subjects to deny vulnerability to the threat. Three hypotheses are proposed to compare responses among those who are exposed to the threat of future downsizing and those who are not. In particular, I predict that subjects who are exposed to the threat of future downsizing will manage their threat by: (a) denying their vulnerability to the threat, and (b) embracing worldviews, which in this study are the business ideologies described above. I conducted a 2 (threat of future downsizing or control) by 2 (business ideologies: the ideology of employee self-reliance or the ideology of corporate change) between-subjects analysis of variance (ANOVA) to test whether those exposed to the threat of future downsizing condition engaged in behavior that would help them deny vulnerability to the threat. The ANOVA result confirms the pretest conducted previously, indicating that threat of future downsizing leads to denial of vulnerability to downsizing. Another two hypotheses examining whether the threat of future downsizing led to being more favorable toward business ideologies were tested using a 2 (threat of future downsizing or control) by 2 (business ideologies: the ideology of employee self-reliance or the ideology of corporate change) between-subjects analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). These hypotheses were not supported. Results were significant, however, in the opposite-to-predicted direction, suggesting that when exposed to the threat of future downsizing, subjects tended to evaluate the ideologies of employee self-reliance and corporate change less positively rather than more positively. The implications for future research and managerial practice are discussed.

The proposed redistribution of the duties in the 3 person office will consist of evaluating the tasks performed daily for a period of one month. One [sic] the duties of the 3 people are evaluated and duplication and streamlining opportunities are developed, the team will begin implementing and organizing immediately. The control group is all the employees who are paid hourly at the Gypsum, OH location and a 3 person group of salaried employees that work in the small main office of the plant. The data will be collected and analyzed by an outside firm so as to ensure the results are unbiased and accurate.

Our analysis is based on nationwide administrative data on all private sector firms and their employees in Finland over the period 2005-2017. We focus on firms with at least 20 employees that lay off at least 20% of their total workforce between two consecutive years. We estimate whether those who have been laid off have more diagnosed mental health disorders before downsizing happens than those who have not been laid off. In our baseline specification, controlling for a rich set of employee characteristics, we find that having had any mental health disorder diagnosis in the three years that preceded the downsizing increases the probability that an employee is laid off by 6 percentage points. The results highlight that those with underlying mental health disorders are more vulnerable to losing their jobs, even in the event of a mass layoff.
