These ideas have been elaborated over the past 20 years or so by many researchers who see storytelling as the interactive process, which constitutes the site of the production of teachers’ knowledge. Narrative research makes it possible to pay attention to the wider concerns that shape the work of teaching, looking at the whole lives of teachers and other educational practitioners, and exploring those lives as embedded in multiple contexts. Listening to teachers speak about whatever most concerns them in their work, it is not surprising that we hear a wide range of different voices not only from different teachers but within the speech of any one teacher. The purpose of this book is to reflect back to the field a multidimensional, multivoiced portrayal of teaching as it is, bringing our attention to both the complexity and the possibility inherent in the work of teachers. Approaching teaching in this way, as multivoiced, allows us to hear possibilities for change and development in the stories of teachers and classrooms.

The study focusses on the cross-cultural contexts in one of the states in South India and the Netherlands. Karnataka in the recent times is experiencing fertility transition while the Netherlands has already achieved fertility transition. The two cultural contexts are both diverse and unique in character. The author explores both the uniqueness as well as the similarities, hence studying the impact of higher education on the changing lives of women as a continuum across cultures and societies. Changes at the individual level are captured by distinguishing women into older and younger generations, while changes at the societal level are captured through social change. At the individual level, we distinguish between the 'lived' life course and the 'perceived' life course. At the societal level we focus on how higher educational attainment has enhanced women's position in the society. The study uses secondary data from the National Family Health Survey (1998-1999) for the state of Karnataka and the Netherlands Family Fertility Survey (OG 98). In addition to the secondary data, in-depth interviews were also conducted amongst women in Bangalore and Groningen.

By employing the autoethnographic approach and analyzing in-depth face-to-face interviews and journal entries, Oda-Sheehan reflected on her teaching practices and her own identity formation to explore the critical factors for the integrative approach. Through this life-sized portrait of the research project, she obtained interpretive insights that show how critical it is for teachers to have an awareness of their multiple identities and perspectives, long-term visions, and readiness for necessary transformation. This book meticulously crafts and demonstrates how autoethnography can be utilized as a research method to merge analytic rigor and creative dynamics. Through the connectivity in an autoethnographic orientation, readers may find themselves in the stories unfolded in the chapters and be guided to reflect on their own experiences and endeavors. In that way, what is presented in this book may become readers’ own stories, giving them the strength to go forward in life. This book can provide a platform of open dialogue to explore approaches to bridge life and academia collaboratively.
