The study used a descriptive research designed type. A total of twenty-nine (29) pupils who are in Basic two were used for the study. Questionnaires and test were the instruments used in gathering data on pupils and their parents. Responses from the pupils and their parents were treated statistically using frequency tables, percentages, mean, standard deviation and Pearson’s Correlation as the tools. Major findings from the study indicated that pupils’ academic performance is just above average; and that the Socio-economic and parenting factors of the parents of the pupils’ are also average. The study further established that there is a significant, medium and positive relation existing between the Socio-economic status of pupils’ parents and pupils’ academic performance; the parenting attitudes and pupils’ academic performance. Finally, the study again established that there is a significant, medium relation between the Socio-economic status of pupils’ parents and their parenting attitude or responsible parenting. Based the findings, suggestions in the form of recommendations were offered, which included; the need for deepened teacher – parent collaboration and the school undertaking activities to attract parents to the school.

A review of the current literature examines parental involvement in four sections: what parental involvement looks like, the benefits of parental involvement, factors affecting parental involvement and why parental involvement is important for schools. The literature also examines students' attitudes and motivation towards education and discusses types of motivation, causes of motivation and the timing of the student's life at which motivation can be studied. To conduct the research, surveys were given to parents and students in the third grade of an urban elementary school in a large Midwestern city to determine if there was a correlation between parental beliefs and attitudes about involvement and students' attitude and motivation. Student achievement data was gathered from the program used by the school for progress monitoring. Results indicate that parental decisions to be involved are statistically related to invitations from school, role construction, and self-efficacy. Additionally, results indicated that achievement data are positively correlated with role construction and invitations from the child. Findings are discussed and compared to research in which the current study supports and refutes. Limitations to the study, future research, and classroom implications are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The study examines the influence of parental influence and career-related variables on academic achievement being one of the fundamental factors in educational and career development process that paves way to the translation of career choice, interest and goals into action directly and indirectly through the mediation of academic self-efficacy and educational aspiration. The study was based on the theoretical foundation of Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and Donald Super theory of career development. The study used a valid sample of 502 drawn through stratified random sampling technique from 28 randomly selected secondary schools in three metropolitan educational zones. Data was collected using a questionnaire that measured seven constructs. However, data collected was analyzed using SPSS version 20 and Amos Software version 18. Path analysis was employed in analysing the data and findings reveal that parental education and parental academic motivation as component of parental influence significantly and positively affect academic self-efficacy while all parental education and parental involvement significantly and positively influence educational aspiration. On the other hand, only vocational outcome expectation as a component of career-related component variables significantly and positively influenced academic self-efficacy. However, no significant direct relationships between academic self-efficacy, educational aspiration and academic achievement were found. Moreover, no mediation effect of academic self-efficacy and educational aspiration in the relationship between parental influence, career-related variables and academic achievement. Theoretically, the findings of the study support the preposition of SCCT involving strong correlation between vocational outcome expectation and self-efficacy. The study provides a ground for new policy initiatives to connect guidance with major public policy to enhance educational efficiency and outcome for young people. The study recommends that school administrators' should improve parental involvement by bridging the gap between home and school and ensure that functional guidance and counselling services are provided to cater for the students' educational, career and personal needs.

The present study seeks to more clearly define and quantify parental involvement and examine the reduction of academic risk factors for economically disadvantaged students through a program of parental involvement in the educational setting. This study compares the academic achievement (ITBS scores) of 70 students enrolled in 1st thru 5th grades at an elementary public charter school in relation to the level of documented parental involvement (PI). Data indicate that in comparison to students enrolled at two neighborhood traditional public elementary schools, students at the charter school are 1.2 to 1.7 times more likely to pass the state mandated TAKS test in grades three through five. However, statistical analyses did not support the hypothesis that level of parental involvement was associated with academic achievement.

However, there is still a concerning percentage of students who are choosing to drop out of school (California Department of Education, 2012). It is groups of these students, as well as others, whose grades, attendance, and work completion are inconsistent. The desire to determine why students succeed or fail was the catalyst for this study. A review of the literature pertaining to this topic revealed a multitude of possible influences to school success. However, this study focused on only two of these possible influences: parental involvement and parental expectations. Part of the reason for the focus on these topics was for educators to understand how parental involvement and parental expectations are related to student success in a specific setting, thereby bringing possible areas for improvement into the foreground that have the capacity to increase student achievement. Data for this study was collected by using student surveys and interviews. The surveys were created to measure factors related to parental involvement and parental expectations. Approximately sixty students participated in the survey process. After the surveys were completed, interview questions were generated to expand and explain the initial findings from the survey. A total of six students participated in the interviews and responses from five of those interviews were used. The data offered by both the surveys and interviews were then analyzed and interpreted, providing the study0́9s final conclusions and answers to its research questions. This study asked two primary questions: 1. For students in an independent study school in Northern California, what is the relationship between levels of parental involvement and academic outcomes? 2. For this same population of students, are the academic expectations parents have for their children related to academic outcomes? For the first question, it was determined that a positive relationship exists between parental involvement and academic achievement. The answer to the second question was that parental expectations do not influence students to perform at a level that meets their parents' expectations.

The study also looks at the influence of family structure, socioeconomic status, and student's sex and race on academic achievement. Secondary data from the Educational Longitudinal Study (ELS) of 2002 is utilized for analysis. When looking at the total variance, the SES model segment had the greatest impact on student achievement, while the parental involvement model segment had the second greatest impact. However, when investigating unique variance, the SES segment accounted for 41%, while the parental involvement model segment accounted for 43% of the unique variance in standardized test composite scores. In conclusion, SES and parental involvement are important factors that influence student academic achievement.

The research instruments were questionnaires for students and parents, interview schedules for parents and teachers and parent-child relationship scale for students. The study population comprised of 1804 students, 80 parents representatives and 51 teachers. A correlation research design was adopted based on a sample drawn from five secondary schools in the study area. Purposive sampling was used to select a sample 18 teachers and 36 parents while stratified random sampling was used in the selection of 180 students.
