Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant body of knowledge is the basis for a holistic, caring and scientific evidence-based nursing education in practice for professional development. Quality teaching leads to good learning and both aspects are two of the main issues of quality assurance in nursing education today. To begin with, not all nursing students have the same levels of motivation or learning abilities. It is with cognisance of providing quality care for patients that the role of the nurse educator has to be to enhance nursing students' learning using scientific evidence based teaching. Research around teaching and learning processes is an important part of the delivery of quality education, which in turn impacts on students' learning results and experiences, thereby, ensuring holistic biopsychosocial care to patients. The main aim of teaching and learning in nursing, at all levels, is to enhance the nurses' contribution to assist the individuals, families and communities in promoting and preserving health, well-being and to efficiently respond to illnesses. We hope that this book can be used as a resource to increase the body of knowledge in teaching and learning in nursing, thereby enhancing the role and contribution of health care professionals to clinical practice.

Book Synopsis The Effect of Perceived Social Status on Social Stigma Associated with Substance Abuse in a Sample of Nursing Students by : Mikaela Cloyd
Download or read book The Effect of Perceived Social Status on Social Stigma Associated with Substance Abuse in a Sample of Nursing Students written by Mikaela Cloyd and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stigma associated with being an "addict" in the United States has been found to be a deterrent for individuals seeking treatment (SAMHSA, 2013). An individual's social status often influences how they are perceived and treated by others (Schooler, 1994), even within the healthcare community. The current vignette study aimed to examine students' attitudes toward a hypothetical substance user when given different indicators of their social status. Seventy-nine nursing students from a university in the southwestern United States were assigned to one of three conditions (high-status, low-status, unspecified status). A one-way between-subjects ANCOVA was planned, with perception of social status being the independent variable, stigma being the dependent variable, and level of contact (familiarity) and social desirability as covariates. Neither level of contact nor social desirability were found to be related to stigma, therefore, a one-way between-subjects ANOVA was used. The results of this suggest that, regardless of his status condition, most participants perceived the hypothetical substance user to be of low social status and there was no significant difference in level of stigma among groups. A Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare a subset of experimental participants in the high-and low-status conditions who had responsed as intended to the experimental manipulation of status. Among these participants, those who were exposed to the high-status condition expressed significantly less negative attitudes regarding the individual's substance use than particpants exposed to the low-status condition, with a moderate effect strength. This study demonstrated a differential attitude toward substance users among nursing students based on their perceptions of the substance user's social status.

Book Synopsis Handbook of the Sociology of Education in the 21st Century by : Barbara Schneider
Download or read book Handbook of the Sociology of Education in the 21st Century written by Barbara Schneider and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook unifies access and opportunity, two key concepts of sociology of education, throughout its 25 chapters. It explores today’s populations rarely noticed, such as undocumented students, first generation college students, and LGBTQs; and emphasizing the intersectionality of gender, race, ethnicity and social class. Sociologists often center their work on the sources and consequences of inequality. This handbook, while reviewing many of these explanations, takes a different approach, concentrating instead on what needs to be accomplished to reduce inequality. A special section is devoted to new methodological work for studying social systems, including network analyses and school and teacher effects. Additionally, the book explores the changing landscape of higher education institutions, their respective populations, and how labor market opportunities are enhanced or impeded by differing postsecondary education pathways. Written by leading sociologists and rising stars in the field, each of the chapters is embedded in theory, but contemporary and futuristic in its implications. This Handbook serves as a blueprint for identifying new work for sociologists of education and other scholars and policymakers trying to understand many of the problems of inequality in education and what is needed to address them.

Book Synopsis From Student to Nurse by : Ida Harper Simpson
Download or read book From Student to Nurse written by Ida Harper Simpson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1979-12-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of student nurses at Duke University, Professor Simpson challenges earlier research by demonstrating that a professional school does socialise its students. In addition, by constructing a model that brings together competing theories of socialisation, she finds that socialisation is not necessarily cumulative or unidirectional. Conceptualisations that focus on individual students, such as those emphasising role modelling, student values or peer relations, obscure the most significant conditions and processes. The program of a school is the fundamental structure of occupational socialisation and this structure, not its students, should be blamed for failures and praised for success.
