The dissertation pronounces a comparative quantitative research study to examine participation in summer extended orientation programs as a predictor of fall-to-spring persistence for first-year college students. This research study was conducted through a conceptual replication of a decade-old study at a regional Texas institution. In this conceptual replication study, the researcher observed the enrollment impacts, such as persistence rates and grade point average, of first-year college students who attended a summer extended orientation program compared to those of students who did not. Conducting more specific research in the area of extended orientation and its impacts on retainment of first-year students guides higher education leaders on decisions, programing, and leadership of first-year students to help increase retention, thereby increasing institutional funding, and provide students with better career opportunities. The findings of this study provide time-relevant persistence data intended to inform funding decisions for first-year college student programming efforts. Book excerpt: This study investigated the impact of an extended orientation program, Wildcat Warm-up, on academic performance and retention. The study sought to quantify differences between students who participated in the program and those who did not attend in terms of grade point average and retention to sophomore year. Participants in the study were all domestic, full-time, freshmen undergraduate students enrolled at the institution in the fall semester (2004 to 2007). This study sought to provide descriptive and predictability data by comparing two groups of students. One group consisted of participants in Wildcat Warm-up while the second was a comparison group matched on ACT composite score, residency status, and gender. Institutional data were analyzed, including student self-report record information, institutionally generated grade reports from the end of each semester, and enrollment information. The participant group and comparison group were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The first two research questions provided a preliminary analysis of the overall impact of the extended orientation on the two measures identified for the study: freshman grade point averages and retention. The first research question and hypothesis were explored with a two-group independent samples Chi-square test with a dichotomous response variable. The second research question and hypothesis were explored with an analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA) for both first and second semester grade point averages. The third research question and remaining hypotheses were explored through a logistic regression analysis using the forward stepwise method. This study found there was a relationship between retention to sophomore year and Wildcat Warm-up participation and slight significant differences between first semester grade point averages for the two groups. In both cases, the strength of the association was small, but significant. The logistic regression analysis allowed for the creation of odds ratios for the predictor variables of the study where it was discovered when all other variables remain constant, the odds of a Wildcat Warm-up participant being retained from freshman to sophomore year were 31% higher than for a non-participant. While statistical significance was found, practical significance considerations did not allow much, if any of the variance, to be attributed to Wildcat Warm-up participation.

Book excerpt: Previous research has shown that while nearly 40% of all students who enter postsecondary institutions leave without ever obtaining a degree, nearly two-thirds of students who persist to their second year eventually obtain a degree. Given the impact of the first year, a multitude of initiatives designed to promote first-to-second year persistence developed. The most popular initiative has been the first year seminar and particularly the extended orientation model of first year seminar. Given its prominence in the undergraduate curriculum, a large body of research has developed in recent decades investigating the first year seminar. However, the predominance of this literature has been conducted as single institution studies thus limiting the generalizability of previous findings. Therefore, in this study I used a systematic review and meta-analysis to move beyond information provided by single institution studies and gain a broader understanding of the overall effectiveness of extended orientation first year seminars. The results indicated that voluntary participation in an extended orientation first year seminar had a statistically significant, positive effect on first term GPA, first year GPA, and first-to-second year retention. For each of these three outcomes, a significant degree of heterogeneity was observed between study effect size estimates. Moderator tests did not identify patterns in this heterogeneity but did indicate that, for the first term GPA outcome, courses taught by faculty as opposed to teams of faculty and staff or staff alone were associated with larger effect sizes. Also, for the retention outcome, samples comprised of less than 75% White students yielded larger effects than did samples with greater than 75% white students. The implications of these findings for university administrators are also discussed along with suggestions for future research.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine what factors contributed to student persistence, and what factors made persistence difficult. The investigator used the phenomenological method of inquiry to obtain the data in this study. The investigator interviewed ten former developmental learning community students who successfully completed developmental reading and writing courses during their freshmen semester at an urban community college. After graduating from high school, the participants did not possess at-level reading and writing skills. The participants were non-traditional students between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one years old. They were employed both full or part-time. Seven of the participants were African-American females and three were African-American males. Three of the female participants mothered small children. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that contributed to student persistence and the factors that made persistence difficult. The findings of this study provide a theory of developmental student persistence for non-traditional student clienteles. An analysis of the data revealed that developmental students must not be disregarded during or after completing their developmental courses. This study revealed that in order to have an effective developmental program all segments of the campus must be included. The participants in this study revealed 14 major factors that helped them to persist in college. The perceived contributing factors to student persistence include: student academic relationships, curriculum/course content, campus newspaper, teachers, advisors, computer laboratories, career fair, health fair, tutoring, lectures, group projects, study groups, class assignments, and student social relationships. The participants revealed nine factors that hindered student persistence. The perceived hindrance factors to persistence include: no credit for developmental courses, lack of English 101 in the learning community, lack of flexible learning community class options, lack of tutoring time, lack of group projects, lack of student financial aid, lack of contact with advisors, lack of bereavement counseling, and a lack of advisor interpersonal communication skills with students. The findings from this study can be used by college presidents and governance boards to improve student outcome measures, thereby increasing institutional effectiveness. -- Abstract.
