Book excerpt: This study focuses on the residential demand for energy over tLe period1956 to 1972, with principal emphasis on the residential demand for electricity. The study has as its primary goal to deal with decreasing block pricing in the sale of electricity in a tanner that is appropriate theoretically and econometrically sound. To this end, a completely new price data set was constructed that is derived from actual residential rate schedules published in the National Electric Rate Book. The price of electricity is represented in the econometric demand functions as the marginal price plus a measure of intramarginal expenditure. The basic unit of observation is the state, end the models are estimated using the variance -components technique pioneered by Balestra and Nerlove. Two types of dynamic models are estimated, logarithmic flow -adjustment models in which appliance stocks do not appear explicitly, and stock-adjustment models in which they do. The latter models employ annual estimates for the years 1960 to 1972 of 11 types of electrical appliances that were constructed by Data Resources, Inc. specifically fur the project. The results of the study:(1) Bury once -and -for -all any notion that the price of electricity is not an important determinant of the amount of electricity that households consume. While the conclusion that price is important is hardly novel, the results of this study are especially strong and corroborative in view of the lengths gone to develop methodology and data. (2). Establish the practical importance of proper modeling of decreasing -block tariffs. Future research will undoubtedly extend, refine, and revise the methodology and estimates, but the principle of approaching the demand of electricity(and natural gas) in a two-part tariff framework would seem firmly to be established.(3). Suggest that the long -run price elasticity for the residential demand for electricity may not be as large as previous studies have indicated. In particular, our results suggest that the long -run price elasticity is no greater than I (in absolute1value), and is more likely of the order of -0.8.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2011. This title takes econometric studies as data; it examines their assumptions, investigates their methodologies, contrasts the data sets they use, and compares their results. By informing users what they can and cannot expect from researchers, it can sharpen the criteria that are used to commission such studies and judge their results. By examining an array of studies dealing with the same or related phenomena, Bohi can analyse the ways in which decisions made by researchers affect their results. All while considering inferences surrounding the role of econometric demand estimation in formulating policy and understanding demand behavior.
Book Synopsis Measuring Price and Income Elasticities of Residential Electricity Demand by : Atlana Puett
Download or read book Measuring Price and Income Elasticities of Residential Electricity Demand written by Atlana Puett and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published estimates of the price elasticity of residential electricity demand range from -0.29 to -0.70, for analyses based on household level data; however, the area level estimates from range from -0.02 to -0.15. A similar pattern has been reported for estimates of the income elasticity of residential demand for electricity. Each published study relied on one type of data set (aggregated or disaggregated) and these datasets cover different time periods and locations. This raises the question: does the pattern generated by the published results reflect systematic differences generated by the use of aggregated vs. disaggregated data, or does the pattern reflect random variations in the study settings? In this research the hypothesis has been tested that the pattern generated by the published results reflects the use of aggregated vs. disaggregated data, by constructing both an individual-level dataset and a county-level dataset for one state (State of Nevada) covering the period from 2005 to 2011. Both datasets have been used to estimate household and utility level price and income elasticities of residential demand for electricity. This research shows the same pattern reported in the published studies: the magnitude of the estimated price elasticity generated by the disaggregated data exceeds the magnitude of the estimate generated by the disaggregated data. However, the magnitudes of the two income elasticities do not follow the same pattern.

Download or read book Flexible demand for electricity and power: written by Nordic Council of Ministers and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demand side flexibility is the ability of power consumers to reduce their demand in periods of peak load, possibly shifting demand to other periods. The organisation for the Nordic energy regulators, NordREG, has ordered this study to explore demand side flexibility in a Nordic perspective. The study contains a literature survey of demand side flexibility and assess the potential for, and benefit of demand side flexibility. Based on the survey, the report highlights implementation barriers and possible contributions from to reducing these barriers. Existing barriers are e.g lack of ICT, automation services, smart meters and real-time prices. The greatest potential for demand side flexibility in the Nordics is within residential space heating. The value of demand side flexibility is uncertain, but may be 1–2 billion SEK per year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study residential demand for electricity and gas, working with nationwide household-level data that cover recent years, namely 1997-2007. Our dataset is a mixed panel/multi-year cross-sections of dwellings/households in the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the United States as of 2008. To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive set of data for examining household residential energy usage at the national level, containing the broadest geographical coverage, and with the longest longitudinal component (up to 6 observations per dwelling). We estimate static and dynamic models of electricity and gas demand. We find strong household response to energy prices, both in the short and long term. From the static models, we get estimates of the own price elasticity of electricity demand in the -0.860 to -0.667 range, while the own price elasticity of gas demand is -0.693 to -0.566. These results are robust to a variety of checks. Contrary to earlier literature (Metcalf and Hassett, 1999; Reiss and White, 2005), we find no evidence of significantly different elasticities across households with electric and gas heat. The price elasticity of electricity demand declines with income, but the magnitude of this effect is small. These results are in sharp contrast to much of the literature on residential energy consumption in the United States, and with the figures used in current government agency practice. Our results suggest that there might be greater potential for policies which affect energy price than may have been previously appreciated.
