Adjective checklist (John, 1990) was administered in order to measure the level of Neuroticism, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness among working and nonworking married women. Urdu Translation of Dyadic Adjustment Scale (Naseer, 2002) was administered to measure the Marital Adjustment of the entire sample. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire on attitudes, traits, preferences and skills in order to explore the following hypotheses. When spouses are similar on basic traits of personality, does it make for a happier marriage? Are persons more focused on interior or social qualities of a mate when selecting their spouse? Does this selection strategy make for a happier marriage? Does a person's own trait of spirituality indicate a focus on interior qualities for mate selection? The results of this study showed that similarity in the areas of spirituality, openness, and agreeableness had predictive power for relationship to marital adjustment across both genders. Additionally, similarity in conscientiousness predicted marital satisfaction for men and similarity in neuroticism predicted marital satisfaction for women.

Book excerpt: This thesis is a research study in comparative marital adjustment of women who combine the wife-mother role with teaching, and home women who fulfill the single role of homemaker. Fifty married couples were utilized as the samples. Controls of the study included age range of the women, length of marriage, education, number of children, class status; and for the teachers, years of teaching experience. Home women were so classified if they had not been employed outside the home since the birth of their first child. The couples were matched for socio-economic status. Teacher participants were secured from four school systems located in the area. Home women participants were secured through the aid of the Family Life Department of the Board of Education of Kansas City, Missouri. Twenty-four of the participants furnished leads for the additional twenty-six couples who participated. The couples generally were contacted in their home situation. The wife was given a standardized marital adjustment test and each couple was given a standardized personality test to determine to what extent personality traits affect marital adjustment. Interviews were conducted to determine the couples attitudes towards the wife's role. Results of the study: After controlling the sample through age, education, length of marriage and other factors enumerated above, I directed my analysis at the personality traits of the two groups. The results of the personality tests evidenced that such traits as neurotic tendency, dominance-submission and self-sufficiency of the husband and wife did not differentiate the two role groups in marital adjustment. Having held personality traits contstant, I compared the two groups for role differential and the present writer concluded that the role of the wife in a marital situation does not in itself affect her marital adjustment. That is, whether the wife is employed outside the home or whether she fulfills the tradiitonal role of home woman, her marital adjustment is not significantly different as a result. Possible limitations of the study: The sample utilized was small and not selected at random. Also the actual validity of the testing instruments is not known.

This 2002 volume presents research from a variety of disciplines that examine personal relationships on all three levels. The first section focuses on the factors that influence individuals to enter, maintain, and dissolve relationships. The second section emphasizes ongoing processes that characterize relationships and focuses on issues such as arguing and sacrificing. The third and final section demonstrates that the process of stability and change are embedded in social, cultural, and historical contexts. Chapters address cultural universals as well as cross-cultural differences in relationship behaviors and outcomes. The emergence of relational forms, such as the interaction between people and computers, is also explored. Stability and Change in Relationships will be of interest to a broad range of fields, including psychology, sociology, communications, gerontology, and counselling.
