To determine if a modified subjective refraction involving different amounts of exam room illumination would increase symptomatic night myopic patients’ spectacle prescription satisfaction. Methods. 10 myopic subjects, aged 23 to 29, with symptoms of night myopia received subjective refractions in three different room illuminations. The refractions were tested using frames in an indoor and an outdoor environment. The indoor environment consisted of a dim lighting condition and testing of visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, critical print size, and stereo acuity. The outdoor environment consisted of subjective findings from each participant while looking at street signs, halos around headlights, etc. in a dark lighting condition. The subject’s subjective findings were determined via a questionnaire at the end of the testing. Results. We found subjects were more satisfied with the dark lighting refraction compared to a standard bright lighting refraction when performing activities in a dim indoor setting. In an outdoor setting, the subject satisfaction between a dark lighting refraction and a bright lighting refraction was highly comparable. The dim lighting refraction was found to be the least satisfactory for subjects in both settings. Conclusion. Our study did not determine an ideal lighting condition in which to refract symptomatic night myopia patients, but we did find that performing a refraction in a dim lighting condition is subjectively much less preferred compared to a refraction obtained in bright or dark lighting.
