Book excerpt: This work has studied the particle composition of jets by determining the ratios p±/p± and K±/p± in Au + Au and d + Au collisions at vsNN = 200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Jets were found by measuring the angular azimuthal correlation between particles at high transverse momentum. Jets were then identified by their back-to-back correlation. A technique was developed to identify charged particles using their specific ionisation measured in the STAR Time Projection Chamber (TPC). This thesis contains one of the first implementations of using direct photons to tag jets in heavy ion collisions. An attempt was made to extract a trigger sample rich in direct photons from neutral triggers. The hadron ratios were calculated from the jet yields as a function of transverse momentum in each collision system. Although the away side yield is suppressed in central Au + Au, there is no evidence that the relative particle yields are changed. The hadron ratios for the three systems were found to be consistent with simulated p + p events generated using the Pythia Monte Carlo event generator. This reinforces the conclusion that the fragmentation process is unchanged by interactions with the medium.

Book excerpt: Jets have been studied in high energy heavy ion collisions by measuring the angular correlation between particles at high transverse momentum. Differences in the yield and shape of the angular correlations as a function of system size give information on the medium produced in the collision. Such modifications can be used to infer the presence of a Quark-Gluon Plasma phase, wherein parton degrees of freedom are manifest over nuclear rather than nucleonic scales. In the present work, two-particle correlations were studied in \(d+Au\) and \(Au+Au\) collisions at \(\sqrt{s_{NN}}\) = 200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The technique was extended to include pseudo-rapidity, permitting jets to be characterised in two-dimensions, and enabling the jet shape to be studied in greater detail. Corrections were developed for the incomplete detector acceptance and finite two-track resolution. Both unidentified and identified particle correlations were studied, using charged tracks and neutral strange particles \(\Lambda, \overline{\Lambda}\), and \(K^0_{Short}\) reconstructed from their characteristic \(V\)0 decay topology. The focus of the analysis was the correlation peak centred at zero azimuthal separation, which is significantly enhanced in central \(Au+Au\) collisions compared to lighter systems. The modified peak was found to comprise a jet-like peak broadened in the pseudo-rapidity direction, sitting atop a long range pseudo-rapidity correlation. The former is suggestive of jet modification by the medium, and the latter may indicate a medium response to jets. Correlations with identified particles indicated the modified same side peak may in part be formed from particles originating from the underlying event.

Book excerpt: Measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) have provided indirect measurements of jets in a heavy ion environment using the two- particle correlation method in the presence of a high-pT particle. These measurements have offered insight into the formation of a new state of dense nuclear matter called the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) through the observation of jet quenching. However, the two-particle methodology has also shown to be biased towards di-jet production near the surface of the medium being created. Here, a detailed study using the PHENIX detector is provided, in an attempt to measure a more accurate jet-induced two-particle correlation measurement than previously published and to reduce the bias observed in two-particle correlation measurements. The reduction in surface bias emission is performed via the requirement of two antipodal high-pT particles (a.k.a. "2+1" correlation) in an attempt to control the production point of the di-jet. The measurements made in Au+Au collisions when compared to p+p collisions show that the method provides additional sensitivity to the jet quenching previously observed in two-particle correlation method.

Book excerpt: One major goal of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, New York, is to create and study the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). This state of matter results from the phase transition of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at extremely high temperature (1012 K) and densities (100 times normal nuclear matter). Au ions are collided in an attempt to increase the temperature necessary to cross the phase boundary. To study the properties of this new matter, high energy jets are used as a probe. Jets are a collimated spray of hadrons resulting from the fragmentation of high-energy quarks and gluons (partons). Observations from single particles with large momentum transverse to the beam direction (pr) suggest that jets are suppressed or quenched due to energy loss from to strong interactions with the medium. This thesis presents, for the first time, a systematic study of jets from nuclear collisions. These jet measurements further constrain models of energy loss which reproduce the measured suppression in Au+Au collisions. A detailed study of jet properties using two-particle azimuthal correlations, a statistical method to detect jets, is performed. It is found that d+Au jet properties are very similar to those in p+p collisions. This indicates that the cold nuclear medium does not strongly modify jets at RHIC energies. In Au+Au collisions a suppression of jet yields is observed but not to the level of the single particle suppression. A consequence of energy loss models is a large broadening of the di-jet distribution. Little to no broadening is observed. At the present time there is no consistent picture of energy loss based on the available data from single particle spectra and from di-jet correlations.

Book excerpt: The possible presence of Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), the new state of matter created at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions, is currently under investigation for smaller collisions systems such as light-heavy ions and even p+p. Long range angular correlations of particles produced in p+Pb, p+Au, d+Au, and 3He+Au, show evidence of QGP collective flow, but another signature, QGP-induced jet energy loss effects has not been identified. To address this situation, in this dissertation, a recently introduced observable RI is employed in light-heavy ion collisions. RI is derived from two-particle correlation method commonly used to study jet modification from energy loss in Au+Au.

Book excerpt: The kinematic correlations of isolated-[gamma]+jet scatterings in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at centre-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV per nucleon pair are studied for the investigation of the jet quenching phenomena in hot and dense QCD medium. The analysis uses collision data delivered by the LHC and recorded by CMS detector at CERN. The angular correlation, the transverse momentum ratio and the rate of mono-photon events are measured and their dependence on the collisional impact parameter is examined in lead-lead collision. The results of proton-proton collisions are used as the reference to which the lead-lead results are compared. Significant energy loss of jets induced by the hot and dense medium, and its gradual rise in correlation to the size of the medium are observed in lead-lead collisions, while a modification of the direction of jet axis is not detected.

Book excerpt: The Quark-Gluon Plasma, an extreme state of matter at temperatures above 2 Trillion K, is now regularly produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. High transverse momentum ($p_T$) partons (quarks and gluons), produced in the collision, with energies far above the temperatures of the QGP, lose their energy while traversing the QGP via scattering and emissions. Parton energy loss for these hard partons is studied in Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of an electron on a large nucleus, where the produced quark traverses the cold nuclear medium. We present a complete reanalysis of the next-to-leading twist single gluon emission rate. The contributions from a power expansion of the phase terms, $N_c$ suppressed terms, and finite gluon momentum fraction terms, which were neglected in previous efforts, are now included prior to the collinear expansion. These additional terms introduce a new momentum fraction dependence to the medium-modified kernel (thereby changing the splitting function in a medium). In addition, the medium-modified kernel is discovered to be positive-definite and increasing with path length. The medium modified DGLAP evolution equation was studied in greater detail by using the jet function and a proposed di-prong function. A partially developed framework to study jet modification, with and without grooming, using the factorized jet function and the di-prong function, which can be evolved using the DGLAP evolution equation, is discussed. The importance of the high virtuality stage of the partonic shower was investigated by means of a multistage event generator. The concept of switching virtuality, which is used to switch between the high and low virtuality stages in a multistage event generator, is explored using the vacuum and medium-modified splitting functions. The importance of multistage evolution is demonstrated using the JETSCAPE framework. A variety of observables associated with a range of collision energies and centralities were shown to be explained without having to re-tune any parameter. The multi-stage framework yields a satisfactory and simultaneous description of a wide variety of observables in heavy-ion collisions, especially jet based observables, thereby establishing a baseline from where further theoretical improvements can be systematically studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to cover the fascinating field of physics of relativistic heavy ions, mainly from the experimentalist's point of view. After the introductory chapter on quantum chromodynamics, basic properties of atomic nuclei, sources of relativistic nuclei, and typical detector set-ups are described in three subsequent chapters. Experimental facts on collisions of relativistic heavy ions are systematically presented in 15 consecutive chapters, starting from the simplest features like cross sections, multiplicities, and spectra of secondary particles and going to more involved characteristics like correlations, various relatively rare processes, and newly discovered features: collective flow, high pT suppression and jet quenching. Some entirely new topics are included, such as the difference between neutron and proton radii in nuclei, heavy hypernuclei, and electromagnetic effects on secondary particle spectra.Phenomenological approaches and related simple models are discussed in parallel with the presentation of experimental data. Near the end of the book, recent ideas about the new state of matter created in collisions of ultrarelativistic nuclei are discussed. In the final chapter, some predictions are given for nuclear collisions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), now in construction at the site of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva. Finally, the appendix gives us basic notions of relativistic kinematics, and lists the main international conferences related to this field. A concise reference book on physics of relativistic heavy ions, it shows the present status of this field.

Book excerpt: Jet quenching in the matter created in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions provides a tomographic tool to probe the medium properties. Recent experimental results on jet production at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) are reviewed. Jet properties in p+p and d+Au collisions have been measured, establishing the baseline for studying jet modification in heavy-ion collisions. Current progress on detailed studies of high transverse momentum production in Au+Au collisions is discussed, with an emphasis on dihadron correlation measurements.

Book excerpt: This concise primer reviews the latest developments in the field of jets. Jets are collinear sprays of hadrons produced in very high-energy collisions, e.g. at the LHC or at a future hadron collider. They are essential to and ubiquitous in experimental analyses, making their study crucial. At present LHC energies and beyond, massive particles around the electroweak scale are frequently produced with transverse momenta that are much larger than their mass, i.e., boosted. The decay products of such boosted massive objects tend to occupy only a relatively small and confined area of the detector and are observed as a single jet. Jets hence arise from many different sources and it is important to be able to distinguish the rare events with boosted resonances from the large backgrounds originating from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This requires familiarity with the internal properties of jets, such as their different radiation patterns, a field broadly known as jet substructure. This set of notes begins by providing a phenomenological motivation, explaining why the study of jets and their substructure is of particular importance for the current and future program of the LHC, followed by a brief but insightful introduction to QCD and to hadron-collider phenomenology. The next section introduces jets as complex objects constructed from a sequential recombination algorithm. In this context some experimental aspects are also reviewed. Since jet substructure calculations are multi-scale problems that call for all-order treatments (resummations), the bases of such calculations are discussed for simple jet quantities. With these QCD and jet physics ingredients in hand, readers can then dig into jet substructure itself. Accordingly, these notes first highlight the main concepts behind substructure techniques and introduce a list of the main jet substructure tools that have been used over the past decade. Analytic calculations are then provided for several families of tools, the goal being to identify their key characteristics. In closing, the book provides an overview of LHC searches and measurements where jet substructure techniques are used, reviews the main take-home messages, and outlines future perspectives.
