Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been a little more than half a century since serious, organized research on hyper tension began. Public and even physician interest in the subject remained minimal until the early forties, and even then there were not more than a dozen "fulltime" investigators worldwide. The first organization devoted to communicating regularly the results of hy pertension research was created in Cleveland in 1945; it became the Council for High Blood Pressure Research of the American Heart Association in 1949. The early history of hypertension is not a story of progressive achievement. Richard Bright is given great credit, followed by Mahomed, Allbutt, Riva-Rocci, Bergman and Janeway, but it was not until Volhard, Fahr and Allen that some semblance of order emerged. They were followed by a younger, much more vigorous group of investigators who in fact initiated modern research in hypertension. Two more generations have fol lowed. In the course of some fifty years, we have seen emerge a magnificent body of evidence that has prescribed good treatment and contributed a considerable understanding of the many complex mechanisms involved in the hypertensions. Treatment is now actively pro moted by public health agencies, including the World Health Organization. This is an other case of treatment preceding full understanding of the nature of the disease.

Book Synopsis The Variables Involved in the Etiology of Essential Hypertension with a Special Emphasis on Stress by : Elmo Joseph Breaux

This book was released on 1987 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is not much information available about the causes of essential hypertension. The etiological components involved in its pathology are presumed to be threefold (genetic, environmental, and psychological components.) The pathological consequences of stress are reviewed. It was hypothesized that stressors would be higher and resources for resisting stress lower for essential hypertensives than for a matched group of controls. The present study compared three stress assessment instruments: 1) The Sheridan Inventory of Stressors Short Form (IOS-SF), 2) The Sheridan's Inventory of Stress-Related Symptoms (ISRS), and 3) The Sheridan Inventory of Stress Resistance Resources (ISRR) to discover if stressors would be significantly higher and resistance resources lower for a group of essential hypertensives than a normotensive group. It was also hypothesized that the IOS-SF would correlate positively to the (ISRS) and both scales correlate negatively with the (ISRR). Seventy-five essential hypertensive Black females and 75 normotensive Black females, matched for age and socioeconomic class served as subjects. Each subject completed the three paper and pencil instruments noted in the preceding paragraph. Statistical analysis revealed that the IOS-SF did predict stressor symptoms, however, it predicted a small percentage of variance in the ISRR. The IOS-SF correlated in an unexpected direction with blood pressure. It was suggested that this scale offers strong potential for use as a stress measurement instrument with predictability to illness. There were other nearly significant correlations between the resistance resources and various measures of initial blood pressure. Possible explanations for these findings were discussed.
