Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical treatment of plane progressive sound waves of finite amplitude in a non-dissipative medium produced by a piston whose motion contains many different frequency components is presented herein. The solution of the second-order wave equation is represented in the form of a Fourier series and the coefficients are expressed in terms of Bessel functions. The progressive distortion of the wave form and the generation of higher harmonics are studied from consideration of the energy density of the different frequency components. Due to the non-linearity between the pressure and specific volume, there is found to be a transfer of energy from components of lower frequency to those of higher frequency. This transfer of energy is more efficient if harmonics are initially present in the sound wave. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: vi tute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Thus, the book does not contain material on the nonlinear interaction of nonlinear ab sorption of high-intensity acoustic oscillations in solids, etc. Al though the main body of the text generally encompasses the results of the author of the given part of the book, the materials of other Soviet and foreign researchers working in the particular field are also incorporated in the interest of clarity and completeness. Part I presents a survey of the results of investigations con ducted by the author in the nonlinear absorption of,sound in liquids and gases. Of special interest are the effects on nonlinear ab sorption in convergent and divergent cylindrical and spherical fronts. Part n is based on results obtained by the author largely during his tenure at the Acoustics Institute. It is given over to the rather complex and beguiling problem of the radiation pressure, an area that is often imprecisely and at times incorrectly handled. Part lli comprises a survey of our knowledge concerning acoustic streaming. Even though the advances made in this area at the Acoustics Institute are relatively limited, the subject is still important enough to warrant its inclusion as an independent part of the book.

Book excerpt: "This thesis is a theoretical investigation of the effects of intense sound levels and steady flow on the propagation of plane-waves in tubes of constant diameter. The analysis is limited to a study of the change of wave profile due to the intense sound levels, and steady flow. However, corrections for effects of viscous and heat conduction losses at tube walls are also presented. To simplify the analysis, the problem is treated by considering the steady flow and finite-amplitude-sound wave effects separately. For finite-amplitude sound only, two approaches are evaluated. The first uses small perturbations to derive a finite-amplitude wave equation. It is assumed that a velocity potential exists, and that the relationship between acoustic variables in the linear equation also applies to second-order terms. Because of the nature of the nonlinearity of the finite-amplitude wave equation, only an approximate solution is obtained; the solution is, therefore, limited to weak nonlinearities. A second approach, solution by the method of characteristics, is also investigated. Trimmer's investigation of steady flow is presented and discussed. His approach for small amplitude sound waves is extended to the approximate solution obtained for finite amplitude waves. A final correction to account for tube wall losses is also described and presented. Results obtained show that for sound pressure levels up to 140 dB in many practical systems finite amplitude effects are relatively small, but may become significant in the presence of steady flow; tube attenuation reduces finite-amplitude effects, but not significantly for frequencies less than 1000 Hz in tubes greater than 1 in. diameter and less than 5 meters in length"--Abstract, pages ii-iii.
