Book excerpt: My introduction to the fascinating phenomena associated with detonation waves came through appointments as an external fellow at the Department of Physics, University College of Wales, and at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Leeds. Very special thanks for his accurate guidance through the large body of information on gaseous detonations are due to Professor D. H. Edwards of University College of Wales. Indeed, the onerous task of concisely enumerating the key features of unidimensional theories of detonations was undertaken by him, and Chapter 2 is based on his initial draft. When the text strays to the use of we, it is a deserved acknow ledgement of his contribution. Again, I should like to thank Professor D. Bradley of Leeds University for his enthusiastic encouragement of my efforts at developing a model of the composition limits of detonability through a relationship between run-up distance and composition of the mixture. The text has been prepared in the context of these fellowships, and I am grateful to the Central Electricity Generating Board for its permission to accept these appointments.

Book Synopsis Thermo-Gas Dynamics of Hydrogen Combustion and Explosion by : Boris E. Gelfand
Download or read book Thermo-Gas Dynamics of Hydrogen Combustion and Explosion written by Boris E. Gelfand and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential of hydrogen as an important future energy source has generated fresh interest in the study of hydrogenous gas mixtures. Indeed, both its high caloricity and reactivity are unique properties, the latter underscoring safety considerations when handling such mixtures. The present monograph is devoted to the various aspects of hydrogen combustion and explosion processes. In addition to theoretical and phenomenological considerations, this work also collates the results of many experiments from less well known sources. The text reviews the literature in this respect, thereby providing valuable information about the thermo-gas-dynamical parameters of combustion processes for selected experimental settings in a range of scientific and industrial applications.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Fire & Explosion Protection Engineering Principles for Oil, Gas, Chemical, & Related Facilities by : Dennis P. Nolan
Download or read book Handbook of Fire & Explosion Protection Engineering Principles for Oil, Gas, Chemical, & Related Facilities written by Dennis P. Nolan and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 1996-12-31 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The security and economic stability of many nations and multinational oil companies are highly dependent on the safe and uninterrupted operation of their oil, gas and chemical facilities. One of the most critical impacts that can occur to these operations are fires and explosions from accidental or political incidents. This publication is intended as a general engineering handbook and reference guideline for those personnel involved with fire and explosion protection aspects of critical hydrocarbon facilities. Design guidelines and specifications of major, small and independent oil companies as well as information from engineering firms and published industry references have been reviewed to assist in its preparation. Some of the latest published practices and research into fire and explosions have also been mentioned.
