Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present the energy-energy correlation (EEC) distribution and its asymmetry (AEEC) in hadronic decays of?° bosons measured by the SLD at SLAC. The data are found to be in good agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD and fragmentation Monte Carlo models of hadron production. After correction for hadronization effects the data are compared with?(?{sub s}2) perturbative QCD calculations from various authors. Fits to the central region of the EEC yield substantially different values of the QCD scale?{sub {ovr MS}} for each of the QCD calculations. There is also a sizeable dependence of the fitted?{sub {ovr MS}} value on the QCD renormalization scale factor, f. Our preliminary results are?{sub s}(M {sub Z}) = 0.121 ± 0.002(stat.) ± 0.004(exp.sys.) {sub -0.009}{sup +0.016} (theor.) for EEC and?{sub s}(M{sub Z}) = 0.108 ± 0.003(stat.) ± 0.005(exp.sys.){sub -0.003}{sup +0.008}(theor.) for AEEC. The largest contribution to the error arises from the theoretical uncertainty in choosing the QCD renormalization scale.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of forward energy flow and central charged-particle multiplicity in events with W and Z bosons decaying into leptons is presented. The analysis uses a sample of 7 TeV pp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The observed forward energy depositions, their correlations, and the central charged-particle multiplicities are not well described by the available non-diffractive soft-hadron production models. A study of about 300 events with no significant energy deposited in one of the forward calorimeters, corresponding to a pseudorapidity gap of at least 1.9 units, is also presented. An indication for a diffractive component in these events comes from the observation that the majority of the charged leptons from the (W/Z) decays are found in the hemisphere opposite to the gap. When fitting the signed lepton pseudorapidity distribution of these events with predicted distributions from an admixture of diffractive (POMPYT) and non-diffractive (PYTHIA) Monte Carlo simulations, the diffractive component is determined to be (50.0 +/- 9.3 (stat.) +/- 5.2 (syst.))%.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have updated our results on identified charged hadron production using the full SLD data sample of 550,000 hadronic Z° decays taken between 1993 and 1998. The SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector allows the identification of clean samples of charged pions, kaons and protons over a wide momentum range, providing precise tests of perturbative QCD calculations and of fragmentation models. We have studied flavor-inclusive Z° decays, as well as decays into light, c and b flavors, selected using the SLD vertex detector. In addition we have updated our comparison of hadron and antihadron production in light quark (rather than antiquark) jets, selected using the high SLC electron beam polarization. Differences between hadron and antihadron production at high momentum fraction provide precise measurements of leading particle production and new, stringent tests of fragmentation models.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At sufficiently high temperatures and densities quarks and gluons exist in a deconfined state called Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). QGP existed in the Universe shortly after the Big Bang, and today is created in accelerator based experiments which collide heavy nuclei at high energies. Results from these experiments point to a hot, dense and strongly interacting state of deconfined quarks and gluons. The study of heavy flavor probes (those originating from $c$ and $b$ quarks) is an active area of research in heavy ion collisions. Heavy quarks are produced in the initial hard scatterings of collisions and thus are sensitive to the entire evolution of the medium. They also potentially have different sensitivity to medium induced energy loss compared to light flavors. This dissertation investigates the interactions of heavy flavor quarks with the medium by studying correlations between electrons from heavy flavor decays and hadrons. At high transverse momentum, the direction of the electron is highly correlated with the direction of the parent heavy flavor meson. We look for evidence of energy loss in the QGP as well as jet induced effects on the medium. We present electron-hadron correlations from Au+Au collisions in a wide range of centrality bins as well as correlations from p+p. The datasets used are the best currently available due to high statistics and low material in the detector. We also investigate the dependence on the orientation of the trigger particle to the event plane to look for path length dependent effects on the correlation as well as non-flow contributions to electron electron $v_2$.
