Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades, Air Force has made significant contributions to the development of the ejector technology for thrust augmentation purposes. Initially, Aerospace Research Laboratories at WPAFB undertook a major task of demonstrating that compact, thrust augmenting ejectors could be designed. After ARL successfully demonstrated that by utilizing hypermixing nozzles, thrust augmentation ratio of the order of two could be achieved, Flight Dynamics Laboratory launched a program of conducting preliminary design of an ejector thrust augmented demonstrator aircraft. ARL's work laid the foundation for a systematic study of the ejector application for V/STOL aircraft.
Book Synopsis Why Ejectors for Aircraft Propulsion-lift Systems and where We Stand by : Richard B. Fancher
Download or read book Why Ejectors for Aircraft Propulsion-lift Systems and where We Stand written by Richard B. Fancher and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thrust augmentation, lift augmentation and noise reduction characteristics of compact ejectors make them potentially attractive for propulsion lift systems; however in the past, poor thrust augmentation results have negated the other benefits. This report covers the general characteristics of ejectors pointing out what makes them attractive and why only certain types of ejectors are of interest. It reviews the key requirements for high performance thrust augmentation. It also presents a summary of the performance results achieved thus far and proposes some possible applications for various types of V/STOL aircraft. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in jet ejectors operating under static conditions have produced high thrust augmentation that is feasible for application to V/STOL flight. However, because of (a) loss in augmentation in duct flow, (b) ramjet effect, and (c) space limitations, high performance and compactness are required in the design of thrust-augmenting ejectors for V/STOL aircraft. An analytical inverse approach is presented in which the pressure distribution along the diffuser wall of an ejector is defined for a given entrance flow condition and the contour of the desired diffuser wall is determined by using a finite difference technique. The prescribed pressure distribution is first optimized by a modified Stratford criterion for incipient separation of turbulent boundary layers; this optimization makes it applicable to compressible two-dimensional and axisymmetric flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is developed for determining a representative value of the maximum efficiency that can be achieved with high performance ejectors when operating on the supersonic solution branch of an ejector. These efficiencies are used to calculate thrust augmentation for an ejector over a wide range of parameters including operation with a hypothetical engine. Reasonable values of thrust augmentation can be achieved at low subsonic flight mach numbers. However, at flight Mach numbers near one, little or not thrust augmentation was found. At supersonic flight Mach numbers, thrust augmentation was achieved. Basic studies indicated that the effects of temperature was opposite at subsonic and supersonic flight Mach numbers. Thrust augmentation decreased with increasing temperature at subsonic Mach number sand increased with increasing temperature at supersonic Mach numbers.

Book excerpt: Development of thrust augmenting ejectors has produced ejector/diffuser configurations capable of achieving the high levels of thrust augmentation necessary for VTOL aircraft propulsion requirements. Experimental testing has shown that thrust augmenting ejectors can be made more compact by reducing diffuser length with active diffusion boundary layer control employing the Antiseparation Tailored Contour (ATC). Thrust augmentation and internal flow measurements were determined in compact high performance thrust augmentors with various length diffusers. The short ATC/diffusers tested showed significant improvements when compared to previous ejector diffusers. Measured thrust augmentation ratios with an optimum short ATC/diffuser were 10% greater than those with an equivalent straight wall diffuser. Length reductions of 36% were indicated for nominal augmentation ratios of 1.7. The important factors which influence the design and operation of compact thrust augmentor ejector/diffusers have been defined. (Author).

This book was released on 1982 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ames Research Center, NASA, has been active in several programs which have the objectives of learning to both predict thrusting ejector performance and to package the ejector in tactical aircraft. The Ames 40-by 80-foot Wind Tunnel has been used to evaluate the deHavilland fuselage ejector at large-scale and this wind tunnel and the newer 80- by 120-foot will be used in future programs. These programs will include: (a) the improvement of the fuselage ejector performance; (b) its application to tactical aircraft design through full-scale testing; (c) possibly, the application of the short (Alperin) diffuser to tactical aircraft; and (d) evaluation of new ejector concepts. To take advantage of the size, the objectives of these investigations will focus on the establishment of a well documented data base and evaluating packaging problems - from seal door design to duct losses. The advantage of the new 80- by 120-foot Wind Tunnel will be to allow the use of 15,000 lb (+) engines for propulsion, for singe or two engine configurations, at moderate airspeeds, for larger aircraft. The ejector designs tested will be continually compared with that of other V/STOL designs in the large-scale testing phase.
